Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it! Definitely. I'll film some videos on the tools I use, and how they work! Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!!
TwT....You are the Man! I just completed the center voltage and idle current check/adjustment on my 1080. Couldn't have done it without your guidance! Big thanks! To get to that terminal 10 next to filter caps, instead of removing the board, I stood unit on side, used a spring clip from the bottom, connected it to terminal 10, and rested unit back down on a board to give me some room. Worked great imo.
Thanks for the kind words!! Oooh that’s a great idea for getting to that terminal! I’ll definitely remember that next time I service the 1080! Thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video, unlike JVC manuals this pioneer procedure doesn’t show you that the right channel is on the other side of the heat sink. So I was confused whether this adj. was for both channels or what? I was an ET in the Navy and have aligned many JVC integrated and power amps. This is my first Pioneer. Also step 3 under the idler current adj. says to repeat steps 1-4 above, but there are only 3 steps to the idler adj. and 4 steps for the center voltage So this further confused me. Your video was the only internet search I could find that straightened this out for me. Thanks again.
Very good video, you explained everything very well so that even I can understand it. Could you also show how to replace Elkes and capacitors? Which ones are particularly important and often break down? Greetings from Germany
Thank you!! I will try to make a video of a restoration of one of these old amplifiers! I usually replace any capacitors that look like they are leaky, or bulging. If the unit is old, I usually replace all the electrolytic capacitors just as a precaution. Thanks for watching!!
@@TinkeringWithT Hello, I’m back. My SX 1080 is currently causing some trouble. Occasionally, the right channel drops out and there is only scratching in the speaker (like the scratching of a potentiometer). When I switch from stereo to mono, music can also be heard on the right again. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
@@schwabbelbayer6474 Hey! Sorry to hear it's causing you trouble. Sounds to me like you have some dirty switches! It's relatively easy to clean them with a little patience. You'd just need som basic hand tools, and a bottle of contact cleaner, and I'm sure it'll fi it right up!
Question for you, when I tried to do the neddles adjusment 25:32, right at 120 my receiver goes into protection mode, any idea why that happens? Thanks!
Hello Tw/T! Thanks for the video! Your illustrations were very helpful. I just acquired a Pioneer 1080 and am about to go through this exact same basic service real soon. Question: At 20:10, when setting Center voltage to "0 v" and you have to cut that jumper to achieve "0V", is the jumper replaced or is the jumper left cut? Thanks again for a great video!
Hi! Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it! Congrats on your 1080! I think the 1080 is probably my favorite receiver. Yes, if you can’t get a reading or close to a reading of 0v for the center voltage, you cut the jumper wire then see if it’ll adjust into spec! Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching!
I have the same unit. I removed all knobs except the volume knob. I took both set screws completely out on the volume knob and the knob does not want to come off. I do not want to force it. Any advice to facilitate removal?
Ah man. Sorry to hear that. I hate then they seize up like that! I’ve had some luck gently prying them off with something that won’t damage the faceplate like some sort of plastic automotive trim removal tools. If that doesn’t work, a very light amount of heat may help, just be careful not to damage the faceplate or anything around it. Keep me posted!
@@TinkeringWithT Thanks man! I finally got it off with some heat from a blow dryer, two flat tip screwdrivers wrapped in painters tape for cushion, and a microfiber cloth to protect the wood area. I did have to apply a little bit of force, but definitely cautiously. Thanks for the advise!
Hello great video! I have a 1080 that has sat for a cows age that my moms deceased husband owned at some point in his life, and it the phono buttons are not working super hot (if you fiddle with the buttons the left and right channels will come in in out) and the channels are not working super hot, and its dusty to boot.... Will this service job help with that? Or do I need to go in and replace the capacitors?
Thank you!! Nice acquisition! The 1080 is probably my favorite receiver! Sounds to me like the phono switch may need a good cleaning! Since it was sitting for awhile, it’s likely all the switches will need a good cleaning! It’s a common thing on any old receiver. I’d highly recommend taking it apart, and blowing out all the dust, then to clean the switches, and if you’re able, follow the service procedure and you’ll have yourself a sweet 1080! When the switches get dirty it can do all sorts of funky things to the channels, distortion, cutting out, etc. keep me posted on how it goes!!
@@TinkeringWithT Thanks for responding! Also, if you could, could you please give me a resource that better shows me were the terminals are so i can ensure i attach the clips of the multimeter correctly?. And yeah, those switches are all so diryt, will be cleaning them. And yes, ill keep you updated.
No problem!! Yes, I’ll see if I can find a link to a high quality upload to the service manual! It’ll have all the information you need regarding what pins to attach your meter to. I bet it’ll sound perfect once you get those switches clean!!
Repeat commentor here, you’re my kinda guy, noticed on your phone that you have the “blue driver” app. I have a pioneer 1080 and a muscle car and you have a pioneer 1080 and a muscle car. I was an ET in the Navy and because of this video I am making that leap from just doing voltage alignments to injecting signals. I can’t decide whether to use the sonic app or purchase a combo oscope / signal generator. What do you think? Also, can you use Bluetooth with the sonic app or recommend the patch cables?
I have a question what app where you using for the sign wave 🤔🤔🤔🤔 when you where adjusting the wattage needles because I have this same receiver and my left wattage needle needs to be adjusted.
Safety note everyone...when using electrical cleaner or degreaser in a spray can, please make using eye protection a habit. If you ever get either one of these in your eye(s), it's not very comfortable and whoever is in earshot of you will be surprised at your bilingual abilities...trust me!
This video is utterly brilliant. Thank you so much. Very kind of you to do this

Quick question. Did you adjust the meters with an 8 ohm dummy load attached to speaker outputs or is that not required?
@@sirsuse It isn't required for the 1080! Just apply the 1kHz sine wave through the unit and adjust from there! Thanks for watching!

It called Sonic Tone Generator. It's free on the app store!
Do you check for DC offset?
If I’m not mistaken, the DC offset and center voltage are the same thing.
T - 1050 vs 1080. Which would you go with?
1080
I did go with the 1080 👌
