The biggest difference was the Viggen had the 2.3 turbo charged engine the rest had the 2.0 engine. Saab were the masters of the turbo chargers before everyone else got on board.
Huge Saab fan here Amelia and so pleased you made this video. I wanted you to make the video longer :-) My brother had a Viggen from new in lighting blue with that Abbot Racing Kit - a phenomenal car. Please do make more Saab videos (Like your dad’s one) and other classic cars. Pleased to have found your channel.
SaabGirl myself here, just came upon this video. For a moment, I thought you were driving in the US (image reversed), but I see now you, your sister, and this pristine Viggen are in the UK. If she's sold it already, I hope it went to a good driver/home. Not sure what kind of pups she has, but this car is dog-possible. When I bought my '99 9-3 cv (now classic to me and tuned, but non-Viggen) back in '02, I had one 50-lb dog. The dealership salesperson (female and young like me) had a RR Disco and a 9-3cv, along w/a couple of dogs herself. She told me the car could be dog-friendly, and as I adopted two and three more, we enjoyed top-down driving (w/harness/leash and seatbelts, ofc). This was in SoCal, though, so YMMV... In 2016, I drove my 9-3cv x-country here from CA to MA w/my last dog. Since he passed away, I've had no more pets. Yet I do still keep a canvas seat cover, harness, leashes (and doggles!) in the trunk of my now 25 yr-old 9-3cv for my own sister's pup - or any other, just in case.😉
I've owned the same car since 2020, full bracing/stabilizer setup with limited slip diff and a st3 tune by genuinesaab. Civilized around town but a monster when you mat it or track it. Lights up both fronts at 45mph just by matting it in 2nd! Nothing else like it. Mine will never be sold. Far too much fun. Glad you got to experience one!
@@NA-en7kz it has the Quaiffe. Very solidly breaks them both loose, feels exactly like the posi on my 67 dart did. Put over 40k hard miles on it and it has not started slipping yet. Genuinesaab in Missouri did the rebuild/upgrades and tune. Highly recommended.
@@NA-en7kz You could always drive it out there and drop it off with them and fly home and then later fly back to pick up your car. Certain Flights are unbelievably cheap(150 from Ohio to Florida on allegiant), if you're not packing more than a small backpack carryon with you. Previous owner was in Tennessee and sent it to them for the work. Good luck!
Owned an 02 Viggen in Washington State.....Loved that car....should never have sold it.....watching video's like this make me sad that GM killed the brand.....and wonder if I won't be in the market for one soon...this aftermarket package you speak of was never available in the US....to my knowledge anyways......maybe if you still have this car I should consider shipping it in from across the pond! Thanks for sharing!
The first attempt at performance cars ?. Err no. 99 Turbo, 900 T16S, the 9000 Aero ?. Or even the 1992 9000 CS Carlsson which remains the quickest 0-60 Saab ever produced. Paul @ The SAAB Clinic.
Awesome video thanks for making it. I'm on my 3rd viggen. Love them so much. No other car gives me the same smile when I drive it like my viggen. Rare as hens teeth now. If you have one keep it
Really enjoyed the video! Well done. Just for some "extra credits" (i am a swede and "of the period" were these were all that and a bag of moose steak). Tha major thing with the Viggen was that it was the only combination of the 2,3 Engine and the smaller Chassis, otherwise only the 9000 and later 9-5 had the 2,3. The 9-3 Turbo and Aero made due with the 2.0 That's why These wer SO popular among enthusiasts of the time as the engine could with almost no money invested be boosted to 280+ PS and even then they were under-stressed. Enjoying the content good work!
Loved the SAABs that I’ve owned - including a 9-5 HOT Aero Estate which had the same 2.3 motor and 250bhp I think. And my son loved going to school in our 9-3 convertible with the roof down.
My 2001 Saab Viggen convertible has been my daily driver for 13 years. Still a great looking and performing car! FYI - First and second gear is electronically limited to keep you from driving into a hedge. Also, my 2001 does have traction control.
Owned one back in the 90s downfalls, severe scuttle shakes especially with the roof down, brake's and suspension nowhere near up to the power, very thirsty, but i still loved it. Could i be tempted again? Possibly
Dashboard is shaped like a jet cockpit... You got everything on one side and shaped round as its only for you .. also fasten seat belt kinda a airplane thing ... But my favorite is how about all dashboard turns off at night leaving on the speedometer alone.. not dim the light the actual night mode.. 👌👌 I have a 2002 gunmetal gray I'm still have a 99 lightning blue and back in the day add a play some Red 91 9000 turbo SPG version... That one was my first love .. 30 years later I still have dreams about it... 😢
Great video,my selection of convertibles my 1st one is Mercedes CLK 320 I've owned it 8 years. Then have 4 Vauxhall Astra Bertone 2.2/1.8 52 plate and 04 plate and one twin top 07 plate all in blue. My modern convertible is Cascada 2.0 on 13 plate. Also in my collection Ford Transit high top 14 plate an Audi A6 2.7 TDI what a cool car fast automatic diesel and my Jaguar 2001 4.0 LWB. Born in Coventry in 1964 on Tamworth Road I love Jaguars
Nice! Did you fill her up in return? It shows 76 miles dte😅. Designed in Sweden and built in Finland these Viggens. The OG9-3 convertibles were all built in Finland btw. The Viggen production line was entirely in Finland (Valmet). Many more Saab models were built in Finland😉.
Addendum. Older cars, why not. Old Citroens...🤔 Remember when I was a young kid my Dad used to say they were a vehicle ahead of their time. The old ones were. 👍
As the owner and ex owner of around 10 Saabs now, some how a Viggen is one of the main ones I have owned. Your sister will regret selling this. P.s as a young (ish) Saab owner, is she single? 😂
Well lets face it, it was a very poor marriage between GM and SAAB, post 1998 after the SAAB 9000, the last true SAAB. BUT I do agree the Viggen could be a desirable SAAB to own? But not a convertible. Scuttle shake is very very poor as they used a Vauxhall Cavalier saloon chassis (alongside the saloon), not to mention steering rack mounting issues on the firewall for 9-3s for RHD markets causing cracking on the firewall - though I believe this was resolved with later 9-3s and the 9-3 Viggen. It was not an issue with LHD (left hand drive markets).
Big time SAAB/BMW guy here. First performance SAAB was an SPG, which I also had. Now have 5dr Laser Red Viggen. Thanks for the video!

Great comments about Saab and its Viggen 🤗
I love the fact that your sister is just whipping this bit of motoring history around!
Also the best place to sell this would be 'weird car twitter'
Super cool indeed! She’s said this video has almost made her not want to sell it!!
Im not aure if its used in the UK... But in the US "bring a trailer" is a great website for selling a viggen 👍🏻

ahh the torque steer of these old 9-3s. It's what got me really into SAABs. There's nothing quite like it. Great review!! Subbed :)

Very nice condition saab, and a rare wee beastie.
Great video! More Saabs please!!
the coupe was built on the same chasis as the five door so the back seat is surprisingly roomy for the time
Where are the hardpoints to mount AKAN 30mm gun pods or AIM-9 missiles though?
great video, thanks

Seems to morph itself from RHD to LHD too. Joking aside , love these Saabs , Viggen is an outstanding if hooligans car , performance wise.
93 Carlsson is the fastest saab produced with only 33 registered worldwide. It's so rare and cool anyone who sees it mistake it for a normal 9-3
Beautiful accent & lovely car ♥️
I'd forgotten about the Viggen editions. 🤷
I think you’re not alone!
Great car. I think there was also a 9-3 turbo X too. 276 bhp?? I could be wrong.
Yes. 2008. A completely different car.
