They want the best of both worlds. They want someone submissive and ignorant about sex who doesn't inconvenience them with beauty routines and waits on them hand and foot AND someone pretty who will be adventurous in the bedroom, be assertive in the ways that are convenient to him and somehow also still has the time and energy to take care of a bunch of kids, a husband and the house.

I was molested when I was four years old, and a Christian boyfriend who I was deeply in love with was very disappointed about me not being a virgin when I confessed this to him. This is something to understand about the thiknking process of evangelical men. They will hold anything over you they can.

    • @hollym4051

So true. I told a Christian boyfriend (who had slept with multiple people before we started dating) that I had watched porn once in high school, and he told me that I had "stolen" something from him because I wasn't technically a virgin anymore. Literally from seeing porn once. The evangelical church teaches these guys to manipulate.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Sometimes it feels like just a power trip in our patriarchial society in general. It feels like anything can be used against you. The first boyfriend I was with actually told me he wished I was not a virgin. It hurt, even though I don't think he meant it to be hurtful, but it made me want to respond with do you want me to just go grab someone off the street so that I can have more experience? You're too innocent, you're not innocent enough, you can't win because you have to somehow be it all as a woman. It's like Paul saying I want someone that puts effort into looking good, but not in a slutty way, so be non-sexual, but my sexual fantasy too and I'll leave it up to you how to perform that magic trick.

side note, i'm sorry for what happened to you, but you NEED to know it wasn't your fault. you didn't do anything wrong. and it doesn't change your value or your worth as a person. you're still amazing and worthy and wonderful. *hugs*

To an outsider, "not consumed with self" probably sounds like it would mean "someone who isn't selfish all of the time"; in other words, a positive quality. But it's actually a dogwhistle. I was accused by conservative Christians of being "consumed with self" as a teenager for wanting to spend time with friends occasionally, doing chores I enjoyed rather than only doing chores I hated, wanting to tell loved ones about my day after they told me about theirs, sleeping, and using my free time to make art and rest rather than volunteering every minute I had. There really is no line for Christian women and girls where they can no longer be accused of being consumed with self; any moment they spend on enjoyment or self care, no matter how obviously necessary, is open to attack with this logic.

One thought regarding the “must have a servant’s heart/not be self-involved” thing: In the religious culture of my youth group years, these traits were measured solely through outward performance and the most visible acts of “selflessness” (i.e., free labor) for the church community. So as someone who was shy and introverted, and whose acts of kindness were quiet and subtle, I was repeatedly chastised for being too self-absorbed. 🙄

It’s infuriating and nauseating that these types of pro birth (& I say pro birth because these type of people don’t care about the baby/fetus beyond the birth) exploit such heartbreaking and tragic situations like late term abortion. No one is choosing to do that. No one just decides in the 7th, 8th, or 9th month to all of a sudden have an abortion. It’s always a tragic situation where the baby was very much wanted and there is some extreme medical issue. And no one is killing an already born baby, they are delusional or maybe just lazy for not verifying this disinformation. That quote is referencing whether the parents want to keep resuscitation going on a baby that absolutely not live. Ugh, sorry for ranting, but I truly hate this type of disinformation. It causes so much harm, especially to the parents that have to go through something like that.

They chose to abort (7th month) after learning that their baby would have the neurological structure to feel pain, but not take in comfort. People in their church wouldn't stop warning them against aborting and advising them to trust God.
You don't have to be personally delusional or lazy for not fact-checking while indoctrinated in a cult-like environment. People living under extreme social pressure and surveillance naturally limit their behavior to what feels safe within the group. Not saying the disinformation isn't super harmful, but it's more complicated than individual choice

Oh we had a prayer closet growing up. Was locked in it often because I was of the devil…

I can't imagine how traumatic it would be for the mother to decide whether or not to resuscitate a possibility non-viable newborn 😢 that would be the hardest decision and I don't envy them.

Physical beauty is NOT a biblical value. It may be important to you personally, but there is no biblical motivation for a woman to shave her hair or wear make up (which I am assuming is what he meant by "takes care of herself")

Yep, women in the Bible wouldn't have removed body hair, worn makeup or ofcourse gone to a gym.

In a couple of years we will see you do a critique of Paul and Morgan as they discus biblical divorce.

Imagine these types of guys talking about their friends this way when talking about looks. "I'm only willing to surround myself with other men who are aesthetically pleasing. Who care to work out. Who look good in my eyes."
Having a type is okay, but these guys go after only very specific *looks* and it's freakin weird lol.

Part of what they say feels like just a power trip in our patriarchial society in general. It feels like anything can be used against you.
Also the whole Democrat thing is so ridiculous. The arrogance in how they descirbe why it is unaccepatable is astounding. I can list plenty of things in the Republican party that run contradictory to Christian principles, but I don't have the arrogance to then assume that noone in the Republican party may have reason based on morals and reason for why they lean Repulbican. Just astounding arrogance.

What, a person who cares about the environment and animal lives? Worst partner ever!

I love how two Christian guys assume that they represent ALL Christian guys (while talking about the importance of finding a partner who is not too self-centered...) lol
