  • If you know him solely for his 17 years with the Talking Heads and subsequent solo albums, then you've barely skimmed the surface of David Byrne's artistic genius. Byrne's kaleidoscopic career has included film and TV scores, filmmaking, theatre, journalism, visual arts, choreography, and, in keeping with his passion for cycling, the design of location-inspired bike racks. His collaborations extend from Twyla Tharp to Arcade Fire. Byrne's keen interest in the evolution of music and listening in the digital age will take centre stage in his wide-ranging interview with New York Times pop and jazz critic Ben Sisario.

For many years, I couldn't understand how Talking Heads were in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and bands like Rush and Yes, among others, were not. Then one day, not long ago, I was in the car when "Once In A Lifetime" came on the radio. Growing up in the 80s I had heard that song more times than I can count. And I always enjoyed it. But this time was different...As I listened, I thought about my issue with them being in the HOF...And I was overcome with emotion...Because, as the song played, I realized just how moving it was...How moving it had always been...For the first time, I was aware of how much that song meant to me not only in that moment, but in every moment I've had the joy and pleasure to listen to it. And in that moment, my inner HOF debate ended. Of course, now Rush AND Yes have taken their rightful places beside Talking Heads in the hall.(cue music for happy ending)

This is the best interview of David Byrne. I’m not sure if it was the interviewer or his questions or the venue/audience, but DB seems in his element and was able to respond and talk about things in so much detail, whereas, I’ve heard other interviews of him where he practically says nothing and the interviewers tend to ask questions that’ve been asked many times over in other interviews. This was wonderful!

When he talked about the Brighton guy being literate in genre's' as a matter of taste . . . does he ever hear that a DJ is only familiar with Billboard charts and NOT music? That the playlists are encyclopedic and not at all musical?

When he sings, are ALL those notes there . . . or is he 'in the moment'?

This sucks in the sense of trying to make a living with music...its tough as it is..there is little money unless you are touring..and have cd's to sell..when cd's are gone, it will really be tough..selling cd's is always expense money on the road..the rest is to live on...Thats what I do anyway..

Blood from a rock. When the day arrives that computer technology can handle global equity for each and every person on Earth . . . THEN survival will be a word that no longer exists . . . and THEN people will make music because the moment is there. And music will be the celebration music is . . . in the moment. It's taking a while. And we're still seeing flash-points (rebellion, war, civil strife (marital)). BUT WE ARE NOT HUNTER/GATHERERS LIKE WE USED TO BE. Closer to our home.
