One aspect of this event not mentioned but important, is that it also marked a seminal turning point in terms of how the Western democracies viewed the Nazis. Kristallnacht sparked a wave of general disgust and fury around the world and is widely perceived, along with Germany's annexation of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939, as marking the beginning of the end of excusing Nazi aggression and violent excesses. In the United States FDR was so shocked that he recalled the US Ambassador to Berlin. Large scale anti-German protests and boycotts swept America. International public opinion was now shifting irretrievably against Hitler and the Nazis.

The comment is true, but American and British disgust was hollow as it contained no actions to make these crimes against humanity painful for the German government and society. It is really disgusting in itself that no diplomatic relations were broken, and sanctions of some sort were brought to bear against Germany.

This is all so scarily similar to what's happening in India right now. Thugs and nationalist mobs persecuting a religious minority and the government silently sanctioning it and doing its best to strip said minority of their rights and citizenship

The outside world did not make it particularly easy. Immigration restrictions were not relaxed in the USA and other places. A Turkish satirical magazine published a cartoon in the late 1930s or early 1940s showing a ship with Jewish refugees approaching Turkey. The ship's flag has a question mark, alluding to Jews having no country. A friend of mine has a staggering family story to tell. His father studied in Freiburg im Breisgau for a period in the late 1930s. He was on his way home and was to stay overnight in a Berlin hotel on the very night of what was to become "Kristallnacht".
Regardless of how planned and coordinated the actions were, the word on the street obviously was out somehow, because my friends dad was told by the hotel clerk that "it might be a good idea to remain at the hotel tonight". So my friends dad heard noise, shouting and commotion going on in the city, but he never got out. The following day on the way to the station all was quiet, but some places that had evidently been looted and destroyed could be seen.
Imagine having that kind of experience as a young man and being able to tell your children and grandchildren about it.

It’s a Dutch 18th masonry heater, also called ceramic heater that was originally in a mansion in Munich until WW2. It was then disassembled and stored in a cellar to preserve it from the wartime bombing. When Munich was being rebuilt the owners ended up never reinstalling it and instead sold it, so that in 1947 it was installed here. The mason who installed it turns 96 this year and two years ago he came to visit when he was on a tour together with his daughter to see all the masonry heaters he had installed during his career one last time. He installed this one and two more in the house we film in, one of them is a 19th century high end ceramic wood stove which is a miracle of technology - Spartacus still cooks on it once in a while.

Also Barbara Coloroso spoke of the Rwandan Genocide; saying that name-calling of Tutsis "cockroaches" by Hutus. Granted there's only so many parallels here with Nazi Germany, but there are some common themes about how dehumanization can lead to persecution and even murder of the disfavored group.

I have mixed feelings for this video- and it's an overall good episode. Lots of mixed feelings, though some are dependent on what might be coming up in the next few episodes as the series closes.
    1) it might have been interesting/important to talk about what those economic incentives to get Jewish people of Germany to leave looked like. The discussion around the havaraa agreement shows a lot of the tension you're trying to describe about german Jewry, antisemitism, economic life, the nazi party, and their bad economic policy. But since this whole shpiel might come up if you do a video on the Evian conference and the Kindertransport, I'll give it a pass.
    2) There are definitely editing changes that I think should have been made/calls for outreach because you're over-relying on the Bundesarchiv, which in this period is problematic. The reason it's problematic is because of an effort to make Jewish people seem weird, they took a lot of pictures and film of Jewish people being overly separatist seeming.
To explain - one of the first videos, with the minyan (them praying), is very clearly a super-orthodox congregation EVEN for this time period in Germany based on the dress. I know this because when my grandfather died, I finally got to look at some family pictures - including family pictures of my grandmother, her sister, and her parents, taken in Berlin in the 1930s. They were orthodox - but in their family portrait, you would have never known. They look like an exceptionally average middle-class Berlin family. And the reason was outside of being orthodox Jewish, they were.
It would have looked more tragic(?) had there been a tad more legwork there, since it is really hard to express the level of normalcy and integration by this point in Germany and western Europe of jewish people into everyday life. And it is a pity, especially in a discussion of German Jewry, since they were heavily secular especially compared to Eastern European brethren (which explains why there was so much discussion around who is Jewish)
And it isn't like these photos don't exist: I would bet good money that the Roman Vishniac Archive at ICP would have been happy to talk to you, especially because they are trying to identify people in the photos.
(Eg: this photo www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/physician-examining-a-patients-chest-in-a-jewish-health-clinic-berlin-0 or this one www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/children-wrestling-outside-a-jewish-soup-kitchen-berlin-0 or this one www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/emigration-applicant-meeting-with-a-representative-of-the-hilfsverein-der-1 or this www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/boys-learning-metalwork-techniques-niedersch%C3%B6nhausen-an-occupational-training or this one of german Jewish refugees in france www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/students-learning-metalwork-techniques-society-for-trades-and-agricultural

Dear Shana, thanks for elaborate response and apologies for my late reply. My name is Wieke Kapteijns and I am in charge of the post-production, so image research and editing (though I am a historian myself as well).
I will mostly respond to issue 2 and 3, which are in my opinion, legitimate issues you are raising here. You are right that for our episodes concerning Germany, we use a lot of images from the Bundesarchiv. Because of a very limited budget we can only have one contract with Screenocean, which allows us to use their news reels. For the rest we depend on images / films that are in the public domain or have a copyright which allows for educational purposes. That severely limits our range of archive. The limited budget also means we have a short timespan to produce episodes, which leads that we have very little time to contact separate archives. It would mean contacting and contracting hundreds of archives throughout the world. I would love to do that, but the lack of time has prevented that.
But yes, you are right, more diversity and more objective collections of pictures would have helped this episode enormously. I thank you for the Roman Vishniac Archive, I didn't know that one yet, and I will definitely contact them.
For Bernard Wasserstein's On the Eve, I am not super sure if Spartacus has that book, but I will forward it to him. Thank you for that suggestion.
We can't go without our dedicated, and maybe even more importantly, critical community. Your feedback really helps us and will make us improve with the production of every single video. Thank you for this Shana.

Dear timeghost, I just finished watching a US national archive vid, know your enemy (Japan). I thought it was an excellent vid and a subject worth making, a more modern vid. Hoping you would be up to the task, although somewhat daunting I acknowledge.
I was especially struck, by the extreme level of socialism, in the vid I watched and it amazes me, how things have changed in Japan. The process of the ideological changes, from the way of Bushido and, Shinto based doctrines, abused by the state and forced on the masses. To the democratic liberalism modern Japan enjoys. And the radical change from Feudalism to Nationalism.
What it would of been like, for the people of Japan to go through these changes, I can only imagine. The realisation dawning on the Japanese collective consciousness, that they're not really gods destined to rule over the planet. Reconciliation of surrender to the allies with the Bushido - Shinto doctrine. The origin of the doctrines. The distortion and abuse of them by the authoritarian state.
Many thanks for all the vids you make and the work that all the people put in, to make them possible.

Only one complaint: long bearded German Jews are overrepresented in this video. German Jews of the time were very assimilated and tended to look down on the ultra-religious, considering them out of date and not modern. Likewise, Jews from Eastern Europe who has immigrated into Gemany after 1918 were considered culturally backward by German Jews who tended to think of them as something of an embarrassment. This immigration stoked German anti-Semitism of the time and native-born German Jews were aware of this and feared it.

It was mentioned briefly, but one reason why the Nazis were initially reluctant to allow SA thugs and others to act on their own randomly was that the Nazis had sworn to restore law and order. Now, most Germans probably wouldn't see thugs in brown uniforms destroying shops and beating people up as "restoring law and order". This is not to say that the Nazis were somehow less anti-jewish in the beginning, but they were quite aware that they hadn't Germany and the Germans under complete control the first years (the episode about "Gleichschaltung" is very informative about this), so they were a bit careful to begin with. I'm sure there were those who would have loved to do a "Kristallnacht" already at the beginning of their reign, but the top Nazis most of the time knew exactly how far they could go at any given time.

This would explode the episode and make it too long. You’re absolutely right Shana, but like we said this episode focuses on the escalation of anti-Semitic violence in Germany in the 30s as a precursor to the a Holocaust. We will be documenting the position of international powers on the situation of the Jewish population trying to flee the Nazis in War Against Humanity on WW2. There, we will of course also return to the background from these years to explain the chain of events.

History repeats itself, just in different countries. It happened before and it happened after that. It is always terrible.
