Thanks Andrew! I was going to write you about Glow. I absolutely loved it. Beauman's maximalist energized prose is exactly what I wanted. I think I preferred to Boxer Beetle too. Though I know most critics don't hold that opinion :)
It is super long; but quite a page turner. It's similar to Bone Clocks but the writing isn't as gorgeous, though the plot culminates to a greater crescendo I think. Enjoy :D
Literally paused the video as soon as you held up Shadow and Bone to comment: SUCH A GREAT TRILOGY! I just read that series last month and love it and Leigh Bardugo. Great, great choices sir.
Okay, so I loved Shadow and Bone. Wasn't sure whether I wanted to read the rest of the trilogy. Is it all uphill goodness? I really really really really want to read Six of Crows so I was considering just jumping over to that one or would that be blasphemous you think? I don't want the Darkling to come after me! :P
Oh god, no don't anger the Darkling!!! Personally the second book is my favorite. Bardugo introduces a new character and I fell in LOOOOOVE. The last book was really great, but I wasn't completely happy with the ending. I won't say why, obviously. From what I've heard you don't have to read Grisha trilogy before Six of Crows, and I haven't read that one yet, but I think to stay on the safe side you should finish the trilogy first. I believe some of the characters or at least vague references to the characters appear in Six of Crows that might spoil you.
So I just finished Glow this morning on my way to work and I thought it was pretty fantastic. Real maximalist and energized prose. I described it to one friend whose just finished The Bone Clocks as the kind of novel Hugo Lamb would write. And tmrw I fly out to Toronto for a week and I'll have Alex to entertain me on the plane!! :D
Dude. I freaking loved it. One of my favourite crime novels of all time. I thought Irene was really good. But Alex just blows it away. Will you tell you more thoughts in person ;)
Haha, yeah I don't what it is. But Glow certainly hit the spot for me. I think for me, it was the casualness with which sex and drugs were handled in Beauman's book that I found really pleasing; most YA would've played up any adult subject matter of that sort as a REALLLY BIG DEAL and it was nice to read something that just took it all for granted :)
Hey J, thanks for including 'Glow.' I've enjoyed Ned Beauman's earlier stuff, so was glad to be made aware of his most recent. Keep 'em coming!

Jen's review of Arcadia intrigued me so much. I'll have to get to it...eventually haha

Arcadia sounds so good. I am excited for whenever I manage to get it.
It's definitely a big one, that's for sure. But super cool so far. It's kind of like the Bone Clocks buttttt not really :P

Restarts the video and realizes you've already read it...hahaha glad you liked it too!

You sold me on Arcadia the moment you showed me the cover! Sounds like an interesting book too.
It's really cool. It's up for the Arthur C. Clarke award! Let's hope it wins :D
Well in that case it's definitely going on my TBR!
I just got Arcadia in the mail, though not the beautiful hardcover, and the way everyone talks about it sounds so cool!
It's freaking crazy; really cleverly plotted. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it :D :D
Glow sounds fascinating! Looking forward to your thoughts on it!! :) But ugh - THAT cover on Alex O_O xx

Arcadia is stunning!
Read it, read it, read it, read it :D :D :D :D
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on John Irving's The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire.
Should I read Hotel New Hampshire? I'd like to read more Irving, but since Garp I've never known which book to pick up :D
It's all about Arcadia... and you should read The Essex Serpent, just stunning! :D
Essex Serpent, parseltongue, snakes, mmmm yeah! :D
Have you read Alex yet? Keen to know your thoughts!
Dude. I freaking loved it. One of my favourite crime novels of all time. I thought Irene was really good. But Alex just blows it away. Will you tell you more thoughts in person ;)
I think I'm the only person that didn't buy Arcadia last month! I must fix this...
Leannnnnneeee!! Rectify this Arcadia lack this instant!!! :P :P
+Jakob Tanner I fixed it. Had to settle for the less beautiful paperback version but oh my god I am so excited!!!
Wait, where are the bad jokes?
I'm putting all my brain power towards a new stockpile of cheesy jokes. Don't worry Michael, I'll bring the cheese eventually ;)
I never said I missed them
I know exactly what you mean about growing tired of YA. I have read far too much lately - need more grown up stuff!
