Severe Thunderstorm Flooded the Farm Dams & Our Road

- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- G'Day Folks. We had a storm cell move through that has caused flooding which cut our road & caused more damage to our dam/pond walls.
There will be an update video coming in the next few days showing the true extent of the damage.
Cheers All & have a fantastic week.

You will get it sorted mate. Teething problems is all it is and nothing that can not be sorted.
Happy new year.
I've learnt over the last few years to not stess over what I can't control Davey. It will just takes time, a bit of help from professionals & we'll get it sorted.
All the best to you and the family for the new year mate.
That erosion does look a worry. One thing friends tried near us up north, was to pack the erosion canals with tightly rolled newspapers, wedge in tight, covered in hessian sacks, then bassalt rocks. But this was just monsoon spillways next to paddocks, not dams. It sort of worked at slowing the damage down... but has to be replaced each wet season. Where I lived, the back of our place was the start of a swamp around a lagoon, so each year we just scraped out tiny trenches around the house to keep the water from getting too deep, and simply accepted there'd be at least an inch of water on the ground for a couple of months. 😂
And, despite the stress of those dam's demises, I want to thank you for the imagery. ❤ I could almost feel the thick, humid air and smell the soggy surrounds.Weirdly happy memories... though if my place, would be filled with the roar of tiny frogs. I can even look back at our afternoons of 250ml in an hour fondly.. now! 😂 It's an incredible feeling, walking around to check the place and feel the almost shock nature has, trying to come to terms with just having a swimming pool dumped on it. All the best you guys! Hoping the dams survive!
I think they'll hold up until we get the work done CR. Worse case scenario we may need to get some decent clay brought in to line the repaired walls.
One of my fondest memories as a kid was wandering the paddocks during floods as a kid. The pointless rain coat & gumboots full to the brim of water. 🤣
Cheers & have a top one.
Happy New Year to you and your family R & B for 2024. 🎆
Many thanks Anna. We hope it's a fantastic year for you & yours as well. 😁👍
i know your pain ive been trying to fix my dam for 4 years every time it dries out enough for machinery to work on it rains and fills it back up one day the stars will aline between the machinery operator and the weather and i will get it done...happy new year to all
Thanks Malcolm. Hopefully we can both get them sorted soon.
Hope you have a top year as well. 👍👍
I've got a flood zone through my (9 acre) property. I learned the hard way .... Don't try to stop the water.. Let it flow and build your ground structure accordingly. Happy New Year guys we take off at first light tomorrow heading to Adelaide via the Birdsville track.
An overflow pipe |__________ saves dams easy 6" or 12" no more loosing dam walls watch usa dam builders .
We had some great advice & ideas from Danila when he visited. He'll be installing spillways & drainage systems designed to handle 100 year flood events when the time comes.
Hope you had a great time in Adelaide Malcolm & all the best for 24.
@@markissboi3583 We would need a lot larger than a 12" pipe. The designer/earthworks bloke we're using designs for 100 year flood events so the driveway will be getting a 2ft pipe with a few additional 1½ft ones along it's length & the spillways will be sized accordingly as well. 👍👍
Cheers MB.
It’s good that you can see what goes on in the rain, so early in the piece. Better than the unknown and you can work with it properly. Looks good though!
B & I agree. It's great to see the flows & issues straight up.
We just would have liked to have been unpacked and settled in before it happened. 😉
Cheers & have a top one.
While the ground is soft, dig a small trench under the fence to get it away from the base of the wall . Nice drop of rain👌🍺🍺
The surprise culvert on the other side solved that issue. 🤣 B has said that she'd like to dig in a diversion though as it may be a while before we can get the earthworks done now.
Cheers DUF. 🍻
Happy New Year to you both & Jack... it's started with a big splash for you.
Thanks JGA. Jack's year got off to a bit of a rocky start but it'll be clear sailing from here on in methinks.
I hope 2024 is a fantastic one for you & yours.
Hope your new year in your new home works out well!
Cheers Jim. I hope it's a top year for you & yours as well.
good luck with the dam and all new adventures.
Thanks HCC. Not sure if I've mentioned this to you today but we hope to have an update video on the earthworks design in a week or so. (responded to so many comments today)
Cheers & have a top one.
It will be interesting to see what ideas Daniel comes up with. I’m also interested to what you eventually do to fix your dams.
Cheers mate. 🤞 the video will be uploaded next weekend. Have an update of sorts ready to go for this weekend.
❤❤❤
😁😁😁
I wish i could afford tomget Daniel to come to my place. Ime very jealous.
The consultation was very affordable we think for the amount of info we got. The earthworks may be done cheaper by others but I'm more than happy to pay for Danial's Permie knowledge & expertise. We were hoping to use the $$ to get a tractor & other farm gear first then fix the dams before the rain came next season, but I guess that wasn't to be.🌧🌧
We'll be spending all our savings just to get the dams fixed, as long as Jack stays away from snakes & the house doesn't cost too much to rewire.
Cheers Mini & have a top one.
Happy New Year
Same to you Nicolai. Hope it's a fantastic one for you & yours.
It is going to require some serious work. But if you do it in steps it is doable. I think that it is best to dig out all those tires and rocks and to start with a clean canvas. All the best wishes for the new year. 👍
Thanks mate. That's what the earthworks designer said as well. 👍
Hope 24 has been treating you well so far mate.
I just saw Danial on a permaculture video yesterday, he's Geoff Lawton's son.
That's the chap. 👍 He does a lot of earthworks & permaculture design. One of the worlds top permie earthworks designers.
Happy New Year guys! Water is a strange thing for us farmers - we never have just enough of it, always too much or too little. Are we ever happy?
Thanks Glen. Hope it's a great one for you mate.
I know what you mean. Luckily we only relying on it for the house & birds at the moment.
B did say it was nice not to feel guilty about a 5 minute shower. 😉
Best of luck, hoping you don't have to look at the end of a rainbow to get it fixed
😅 I'm thinking a pot of gold could come in handy at this point.
Cheers & have a great one.
oh, happy new year, well it's already a new year for you all. little over 2 hours before we hit the new year.
👍👍
👍👍
I hope it doesn't become a big expensive job guys but I think it may well be. Take care, stay safe, and have a great 2024. Seeya Rob
Thanks mate. Not sure we'll be able to get all the work done straight away but would like to sort out the top 2 dams asap.
All the best for 24 mate.
Could be worth putting in some overflow pipes in the dam system so that the water can move through the system without washing away the dam walls.
We will be installing proper spillways that can handle a 100 year flood when the dams get a makeover.
Cheers Glen.
Happy new year Rob & B!
Cheers DS. Hope it's a top year for you as well mate. 👍
Happy new year.
Happy new year to you as well Jennifer. 😁👍
Nice to see your paddocks greening up. Was very dry and sparse when you first arrived.
Have you considered using hessian bags filled with sand to plug up the breaches in the walls (on a temporary basis) till you can get repairs done?
The water will still find a way around it once it rises which could make the issue worse. Hopefully this weeks rain will be the last for a few weeks so we can dry out a bit.
Hope all's well with you Charles.
It really greens up there fast!
Very fast Sally. Having to mow the house yard every 6 days with all this rain.
Hope you & yours are doing well.
Good 2 see you back on y/t all the best 4 2024 Les from Perth ☔🐕👏💯👍👀
Thanks Les. 👍
Have a top one mate.
Could you not carefully drop some bricks/rocks/cinder blocks in front of the hole in the lily pad dam to slow the water and reduce the risk of wash out? Could combine it with some shade fabric etc.
All the best and Happy New Year mate
It would slow it for a while but with the amount of rain we had it would have washed them away as well. Only way to properly fix it is to patch that hole & create a proper spillway on the other side of the dam. We hope to have a video explaining the details of the work we want to get done posted soon. Cheers TF.
Best wishes for the new year 🎉🎉
Same to you.
Cheers.
Happy New Year. You can use a tarp to halt the water where it has washed through.
Thanks David. I have seen it done in a different situation but not sure if it would have worked well here.
All the best for the new year mate.
Thank you for the videos.
We're glad you're enjoying them 👍😁
Happy New Year all the best for 2024
Cheers folks. Hope it's a fantastic year for you as well.
Happy new year guys.
Cheers mate. All the best to you and the family. Looking forward to catching up with soon.
Happy New year to you guys, look forward to following your journey next year.
Happy new year to you as well Daniel.
Hope it's a fantastic one for you.
The dams do look very full. Also Happy New Year!
Happy new year to you as well Garry.
Happy New Year to you and Bianca!
Thanks Mary. We hope that 24 is a fantastic year for you & yours as well.
Cheers & happy growing. 😁🌱🌱
You need a lot of compacted clay to seal those dams, but I don't think they will stop breaching until they get core walls.
Decent spillways to let the water escape would help as well.
Happy new year guys. I'm hoping things will settle for you.
We hope so too Andy.
Hope 24 is a cracker of a year for you as well mate.
Hi Rob and Bianca. Just wanted to wish a happy new year to you. Let 2024 be the best year yet!
Thanks mate. We hope it's a fantastic year for you & yours as well. 😁👍
Hi guys , expecting more rain , hope all goes well 😐
Thanks Marc. So far so good & it looks like they're forecasting less rain for this coming weekend as well now.
Hope all's well with you folks.
5:30 Hi Rob and B. Not happy seeing that dam pull itself apart. Can you set up and 90mm pipe syphon to keep the water level low and bypass the erosion point?
I'll be doing that in the next few weeks to lower the water for the work (if it's going ahead). They look to be holding for now though.
The real worry is that small dam off to the side of the large one. Danial said there is a real possibility of it eroding back to the large dam wall if there's a lot of rain in the near future.
Hopefully we've dodged a bullet looking at BOM & this weekends forecast.
Cheers mate.
I hope to have the video explaining the planned work uploaded in a weeks time. Just haven't had the time to film it as of yet.
Happy New Year Rob and Bianca. Whew! Lots of work cut out for you. God bless!
Thanks Rose. We hope it's a fantastic year for you as well.
Happy New Year to you Rob, B and your family. Looking forward to your content in your new place. It's looking nice and green🙂.
Thanks & hope you have a fantastic year as well.
The place has greened up nicely. We're now looking for a 2nd hand ride on to keep the grass down around the house.
Might just need to get some goats sooner rather than later.
Pay attention #Kubota time to donate a tractor with backhoe!
🤣🤞 Thanks Rob. I'd be happy with a UHI at the moment.
Very cool 😎 any rare indigenous fish species in that water there?
We're not 100% sure as of yet. I have a mate down in Ipswich that has a fish trap for us to use to see what we can find. 👍
A breach like that can be easily plugged with a sack and some earth or sand. Half a dozen carrier bags full of earth and tied at the top, Why no proper overflow facilities.
They will slow the leak for a while but won't fix it. No idea why only the large one has a spillway. They will have dedicated ones once we get the work done on them. 👍
Cheers David.
@@BitsOutTheBackFarm yep slowing a leak to a trickle all that is necessary , this will help to prevent any further serious erosion until you can get around to a proper fix. Leaving a break like that to it's own devices will only lead to more work for you. try laying a plastic sheet through the leak channel held down with stone, obviously you will need to break the bridges the plastic will provide a water course and prevent erosion. this too only a temporary fix. Have you come across lets dig 18 much of his contractual work revolves around pond building and restoration, whilst not the only way to undertake these jobs it does certainly provide an insight into the problems and various methods of repair.
watch out for those duck eggs I picked one up once on a hot day and it exploded with rotten filth
I hit an "aged" Guinea fowl one with the line trimmer yesterday.. 🤮🤢
Rip all the dams out join them together put in swales go get a lotto ticket for the mega millions at least if the dam walls fail it's not taking out roads and houses etc
🤣 Just bought a ticked today for tonight's draw as it happens.
To join all the dams would require a taller wall at the end so we will be keeping the individual ones.
Swales are planned as are a few gutters & culverts for the driveway. Hope to have the video looking at our plan posted in the next week or so.
Hope you put an over flow pipe in your dam OR it will cut a small channel if it overflows & drain your dam
my mates huge channel 50ft deep all gone no overflow pipe we didnt know about that dam>side |______ to idk maybe the creek >
I DONT SEE ONE in yur video do this asap b4 it all goes down stream
As I mentioned in the vide, we had a designer come visit & give us some ideas for what needs to be fixed & he gave us a quote. We already knew the dams were constructed incorrectly with no spillways & new ones are included with the work that is going to be carried out.
Cheers & have a top one.
Hope you can get it sorted and a Happy New Year to you both 🎉
