It was one of the funniest of all the Dads Army episodes.Pike is side splitting as a Nazi with the way he walks and talks plus his Hitler salute from the top of the van is hilarious.

I was born in 1950 and lived in Blighty until I moved to the US in 1983, and still love to watch these episodes! A big THANK YOU for sharing them! You've made this old man very happy! ;)
One of the best, post Walker. I used to watch the first runs of Dad’s Army on the ABC with my father. Happy memories of laughing together while watching. Thanks for posting.
I’ll never get tired of watching old British Comedies, and with so much choice it is hard to choose my favourite! I was born in 1992 and it makes me sad to say that I would never have come across Dad’s Army (or would never have loved it to the same extent) if BBC hadn’t have repeated them! Ian Lavender not only looked incredibly handsome, he perfectly encapsulated a German in every possible facet! Unfortunately my friends (20-30 years old), and sadly my generation never give old British comedy time of day because “they are too old”! This is truly the benchmark of comedy writing, to which I don’t think anyone will live up to. While it’s absolutely hilarious, it’s sad to say that there are a lot of historical accuracies in the jokes. What I’d love to see is a compilation of Jones’ best bits, though on reflection I’d probably give myself a hernia from laughing so much!!!
Pike's antics and mock German accent made this episode one of my favs. He looked smart as an officer and that monocle was just funny. But he also got the platoon into trouble by bringing them out for a drink.
One of the best ones by far :) Remembering watching this on the BBC in Scotland with my dad. Now he's gone and my sister and I watch it and remember those days.
OMG OMG OMG....one of the BEST episodes about bringing the whole war thingie down to smalltalk and smallmindedness in a small community...never fails to leave me helpless on the ground from laughing!!
"Tiny? He's got girl's feet!" Poor captain Mainwaring, he tries so hard. I love Pike, he reminds me of Dougal Maguire on Father Ted, a loveable lad with a child's mind.
I have to admit: when I watched the series as a child, it was not clear to me at all that it was a comedy. I watched it for suspension to see soldiers in uniforms. Later in my university time in the 1990's I watched the reruns and it always brings me short of breath from laughter, priceless sitcom!
I remember watching dad's army back in 70s it was on the ABC after the news we only by had the one station in those days but they had all the best shows
One of the best television works that I have seen .. We do not have such works in today's world. I hope to be translated into different languages including Arabic
It probably wasn’t the sort of thing that was heavily reported, but I get the impression that false invasion alarms were relatively common. There was a war reminiscence that recounted how a forward observer in Bexhill-On-The-Sea had managed to alarm the entire south-west coast of England with a “sighting” of a full-scale German invasion fleet. What he had forgotten in his transmission, was the word,” test”. The reminiscence and the culprit was one Terrence “Spike” Milligan.
Another classic episode. This would be in my top ten if only Walker was in it. The series took a direct hit with James Beck's tragic death, from which it never really fully recovered.
@Gazzara5 The last episode of season 6, 'The Recruit', mentioned that Walker went to London to do business and that episode is the first episode without Walker.
The barmaid was a knock-out and taller than just about everyone else! Pike sure looked the part. He could have convincingly played a serious role as a Nazi. The comments Wilson makes regarding the flashness of the German uniforms is interesting. The father of a friend of mine was in the British army during the war and even he made the comment that the Germans looked so flash in their uniforms while he and his mates looked like "bags of shit tied up with string".
A common misconception. Hugo Boss designed the SS' all-black dress uniforms, but I'm unsure if they did the gray duty uniforms, and they certainly had nothing to do with what the Home Guard are wearing here. These are Heer (Army) uniforms, and apart from the addition of the Swastika and eagle, they're more or less identical to the pre-Nazi Reichsheer uniforms worn during the Weimar Republic. It's an iconic look predating the Nazis as a result.
Such a Laugh! Cripes as a New Zealander I grew up with this great Brit humour! We had our own but now PC BS has killed a great deal of humour! If you can't laugh at your self then you have problems if you ask me!
Pike/Lavender gave a brilliant performance. He played a lookalike of Major Mohn from the Colditz series which was aired around the same time. Coincidental or not, it added an extra layer of meaning. (In German, "Kaputt" rhymes with "on FOOT", though)
Wow thank you for this show! I am an American, my dad was a soldier in ww2, and I love this! I know my dad would have loved to see this. Like all American soldiers he hid in England until the secret day.. Then he went to Europe and drove the gasoline trucks to refuel the troops.. He only killed one German, he was being shot at from a window and when he hit the nazi the helmet fell off and long blonde hair came out. It was a woman. A nazi woman. Killing a woman was hard on him. It hurt his soul.
Yes its one of the best episodes and loved Pike nazi office impression. Now that Ian the last of the main cast has passed I feel very sad and old. RIP Ian.
RIP Dear Ian Lavender, Brilliant in this episode
Im from Australia. I didn't know Ian Lavender was dead
One of my favourite episodes. Ian Lavender as Pike the German officer is hilarious. RIP Pikey, regards to Uncle Arthur.
You just can't top that, British comedy at it's very best ,simply outstanding .
Ian Lavander simply owned this episode. His impersonation of a nazi officer is priceless!
It was one of the funniest of all the Dads Army episodes.Pike is side splitting as a Nazi with the way he walks and talks plus his Hitler salute from the top of the van is hilarious.
Unfortunately Ian died a few weeks ago, he was the last surviving member

This episode simply belonged to Ian Lavender (Pike). He was just brilliant in this one, especially with his German😂😂
Absolutely fabulous episode. Especially Ian Lavender.
Pike portraying the officer is truly a bit of genius :-)
Sadly all passed rip still watching 2024

Well done lad, this is the true comedy, decent yet hilarious.
Ian Lavender as Pike stole the show in this one.
Pike's antics and mock German accent made this episode one of my favs. He looked smart as an officer and that monocle was just funny. But he also got the platoon into trouble by bringing them out for a drink.
This is one of the best episodes I have ever seen! So well written and acted out!!

That landlord's face......priceless!!!!
The character acting - a British speciality - is excellent.
OMG OMG OMG....one of the BEST episodes about bringing the whole war thingie down to smalltalk and smallmindedness in a small community...never fails to leave me helpless on the ground from laughing!!
Absolutely.
I agree completely!
I am American and I usually don't find British comedy that good but this was funny
"Tiny? He's got girl's feet!" Poor captain Mainwaring, he tries so hard.
I love Pike, he reminds me of Dougal Maguire on Father Ted, a loveable lad with a child's mind.
Pike's mock German accent is brilliant!
The part where Pike pretended to be Hitler by giving the Nazi salute was so funny.
Ian Lavender plays my second favourite German officer. First place is hands down Guy Siner with his masterful portrayal of Lt Hubert Gruber.
I have to admit: when I watched the series as a child, it was not clear to me at all that it was a comedy. I watched it for suspension to see soldiers in uniforms. Later in my university time in the 1990's I watched the reruns and it always brings me short of breath from laughter, priceless sitcom!

Even though I loved Walker's character, ironically one of my favourite episodes is 'The Recruit' which is the first episode made after he died.
This episode brings a smile on myself no matter how much I watch this video
Pike is so cute here...I cant imagine him arguing with Mainwaring about him being a german officer....hilarious
Yes, really awesome..
You can't lie, the German uniform was by far the better looking.

“These Uniforms are awfully smart aren’t they?”

@Ash Correct. Hugo Boss had nothing to do with the outfits being worn here.

Pike was enjoying him self in this role
Pike caused those bells to ring by his behaviour of portraying the German officer to the hilt.
Well, for one thing he looked much smarter in that German officer's uniform, than in his usual drab fatigue.
Pike ( Ian Lavender,) was stellar as a comedic German. R.I.P. Mr. Lavender
And he still is handsome in his 70s - regardless of his own health problems
