      Take the modern US military, disregard the navy, air force, marines, and space force (losers), dissolve the chiefs of staff, remove lieutenant and major generals from the rank structure, do the same with lieutenant colonels, combine first and second lieutenants (you can scream in terror now), remove the NCO equivalent to every commissioned officer past basic sergeant, and presume either specialists just aren't deployed to the mojave (doubtful) or the rank just doesn't exist and any PFC (assuming _they_ exist) is just autopromoted to corporal instead of it being a sergeant no one respects. NCR Rangers are sort of like Army Rangers or JSOC- they technically adhere to the same coc but tend to operate with looser regulations and rules of engagement.
      congratulations, you have the NCRA's rank structure.

      In the real world it would go brigadier general (usually assists in running divisions) major general (usually in charge of divisions) lieutenant general (usually in charge of 3 divisions) and then the general, who's in charge of overseeing entire theaters. Given the size of the NCR army it's not unreasonable to think he's the only general of that high rank with a couple of LtGens and MajGens running things elsewhere. On the other hand it's not uncommon at all for militaries to appoint a general of generals. Pershing was granted the rank general of the armies, putting him as the #1 general in the nation shortly after WW1

    i dislike colonel moore but only because she hates the idea of accepting the brotherhood of steel helping them in the final battle of hoover dam. picking this choice makes you lose NCR reputation (though not enough to move you down a rep tier) which means that she would rather have there be a lower chance of winning against the legion rather than saving extra lives and making a strong truce.

    I'm working from memory, but weren't the Desert Rangers of the Mojave and the NCR Rangers separate forces? I thought their unification was what the statue at the Outpost was meant to celebrate.
    Something that has nagged at me is the NCR strategy of conscription and very short training times for basic soldiers. According to the official strategy guide, the NCR has a population of just shy of a million. Losing 1000 soldiers a year would represent a significant loss to the culture and I don't think a society that small could not sustain such human wave tactics for very long, especially if the society is attempting to emulate the pre-War USA. I imagine inquiries would be held, blame would be apportioned and maybe a senior officer or even the president would be forced to resign.
    Still, I love this sort of deep dive into fictional worlds. It gets the creative juices flowing (ooh er!).

    • @j.g.3293
      @j.g.3293 2 місяці тому

      I think the human wave method could continue to work for them so long as they don’t fight a group with an equally large military population. That’s probably why they could mostly defeat the brotherhood but struggle with the legion.

  • @bigj1905

    I will say, Oliver does get a lot of flack, but his tactics do actually have some merit.
    Here’s why: For all of Ceasers talk of honor and the skill of his troops, the vast majority of his victories come from cunning, deception, and other non-direct methods (the burning of Nipton, the Irradiating of Camp Searchlight, the attack on Ranger Station Charlie, etc), while the NCR’s victories tend to come from direct, conventional battle (the capture of the Helios One, the extermination of the Kings, etc). Combined with the Rangers and Heavy Troopers, I think the NCR wins in a straight up fight.
    That’s why Oliver focuses on the Dam. That’s why he’s called ‘Wait and See’, because he knows that Ceaser is certainly going to try and take the Dam with everything he has. So why wouldn’t he throw everything into its defense? Especially if all the other resources he dedicates else where are pretty much useless if the Dam falls?

    • @atpsoldat6108
      @atpsoldat6108 Рік тому +115

      Lol what merit? There’s a reason why the NCR has more quests than the Legion. His “tactic” just leaves his army exposed to flanking and skirmishes which are highly effective by the way. Instead of sending Ranger out to do their job, he orders them to stay put. Nipton pays for it, Camp Searchlight pays for it, Camp Forlorn Hope pays for it, and most of all, his troops pays for it for the sake of him earning his place in the history book.

      @@atpsoldat6108Your forgetting one major factor: Ceaser is just as blind as Oliver.
      This discussion would be different if, say, Ceaser was smart enough to invade from Cottonwood Cove and attack the Mojave Outpost, basically encircling the entire NCR Expeditionary Force.
      Instead, Ceaser has tunnel vision on the Dam, and Oliver knows this, hence why he throws everything he has on the Dam, because he knows that’s were the primary attack will come.

    • @atpsoldat6108
      @atpsoldat6108 Рік тому

      @@bigj1905 The game shows the opposite of what you're saying though. Caesar (and his frumentariies) does everything he can to weaken the NCR before the 2nd Battle of Hoover Dam. If Caesar was truly tunneled vision like you say, then he wouldn't be spreading his legionaries out over the wasteland to harass the NCR, make use of terror tactics, and demoralizing their enemies. Remember, Camp McCarran has a Legion spy in it, along with the many other frumentarii around the wasteland, feeding info to him. Caesar is not "blind" in anyway at all. Why the hell would Caesar order an attack at the Mojave Outpost? Rangers and troopers have orders to stand guard, his Legion have free reign to harass the NCR's supply line.
      Almost everyone sees Oliver as a fool, for good reason. Amassing troops at the dam is a good move IF there are foundations to support that move. Said foundations that are being broken down over the game by the Legion, other hostile factions, by Oliver himself. Remember, it was Hanlon who carried the NCR to victory in the first battle at the dam. What does Oliver do with this early victory against the Legion? Let the Veteran Rangers, the major badasses of the NCR, "chase ghosts in Baja", only calling them in at the very last seconds before the 2nd battle. For the rest of the rangers, he tells them to stay put when they could have been out there in the wasteland being, y'know, RANGERS. There's a reason why the NCR has the most quests out of all the major factions. They need a hero and Oliver is not that.
      TLDR: Caesar is not "blind" and Oliver does not deserve any military merits at all.

    • @bigj1905
      @bigj1905 Рік тому +74

      @@atpsoldat6108 But then why does Ceaser still attack the Dam?!?!? It’s the most heavily fortified position in the Mojave other than Vegas.
      Ceaser does make use of Frumentari extensively, but most of their attacks just don’t make sense.
      Taking out outpost Charlie hurts NCR Intel, but wouldn’t Echo be a better target, since it over looks Cottonwood Cove? Caesars main foothold across the Colorado?
      The irradiating of Camp Searchlight killed a good chunk of troops, but he then proceeds to absolutely squander that advantage and let’s the NCR regroup.
      The burning of Nipton was cruel and designed to install fear, but the town itself wasn’t important: it wasn’t a supply line or a NCR Stronghold.
      Taking out the train at Camp McCaren was also a complete waste of a spy. Wouldn’t it have been better to assassinate Hsu? Considered by most to be one of the best commanders the NCR has?
      No, Ceasers raids usually don’t make sense, and serve only to pester the NCR, rather than outright threaten it. The only one that has some merit is equipping the Omertàs and Fiends to attack The Strip and McCaren.

    Like there's no way he or anyone else in the NCR could have foreseen the Legion magically discovering a back door inside the Dam
    But if we take a look at the Fort we find the Legion is preparing to bomb the shit out of the NCR's sniper positions... If Oliver followed Hanlon's advice the Rangers would have been shelled to death instantly. At least inside the dam they have a fighting chance.
    Imagine the Legion trying to sneak through whatever drainage pipe they found a way into, only to get gun downed by automatic gun fire. It would turn those passages into charnal pits.

    It seems that the ncr only needs one general, as all of their other force concentrations are a brigade size at best, while colonels make up most officers as much of the ncr’s forces are individual battalions, not the large multi brigade forces like in the Mojave, meaning that they likely can have more generals they just don’t as they don’t need them. The army of the ncr seems to be more a Victorian style frontier force of many small units rather than world war style blocks of huge numbers of men, as the ncr army is only numbering in the tens of thousands meaning they don’t need as many high ranking officers as there simply isn’t that many men to command, being the whole ncr’s pop is about a million tops if I recall correctly.

    More of that would be awesome. Especially regarding the airforce. I know they had some vertibirds but there must be more aircraft since if there only were vertibirds they would have Not created an independent airforce and instead integrated them as a Part of the army like many countries had in ww1 were aircraft were only in Support roles for ground troops.

      @hunterkage2842 Рік тому +6

      Oliver isn't on the frontlines, also the Hoover dam is valuable for power. Oliver is probably a 5-star general but there are likely others. I don't know where you are getting the General being the second most important, there are other politicians outside of the president and maybe they even have a Secretary for Defense, Army, Navy, and Air force.

      @@hunterkage2842 what do you call hoover dam if not the front lines? He can be killed in the second battle of hoover dam. You can't kill a general who isn't on the front line.
      If the general is the one in charge of the army, then everyone else in the state exists at his pleasure.

    • @hunterkage2842
      @hunterkage2842 Рік тому +3

      @@mappingshaman5280 the front lines are the first area of defense, Oliver is close to the front lines. You say army but army doesn't mean military. Military is a word used to refer to the entire Armed Forces, while the word Army is only a subset and one of the many branches making up the military. More specifically, it is the land service division of the military. Although the words are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same.
      Oliver probably isn't the only general and the reason he's likely that close to the front lines is technology limits, so he can have a more hands on command and simply his being full of himself. A secretary out ranks a general so the secretary of defense and such are higher rank.

    • @mappingshaman5280
      @mappingshaman5280 Рік тому +3

      @@hunterkage2842 look just because he's not manning the sandbags, doesn't mean he isn't on the frontline.
      In fallout it practically does since the navies and air force have practically been destroyed. I mean the NCR simps for the boomers whom can get ONE world war two B 29 bomber. I think that displays the state of their air force perfectly well.
      Agreed that he probably isn't the only general, thats my point, that you don't put the man in charge of your whole army where he can easily be killed.
      I doubt uts technology considering the NCR has radio. And yes theoretically they outrank a general, but they don't have soldiers sworn to them, so they aren't as important as the man who controls the whole military in my book. If Oliver was the only general, and he decided that the legion has a point, the NCR would be destroyed overnight. If the secretary of state did the same, Oliver would send in some soldiers and shoot him.

    the rank of general is 4 stars
    the rank of brigadier general is 1 star not 2 stars that would be a major general the real ranks would be as follows
    POTNCR (civilian position active military can not hold it)
    general of the army 5 stars (would be in command of there original branch and all other branches)
    general 4 starts
    lieutenant general 3stars
    major general 2 stars
    brigadier general 1 star

    15:50 This part I’m required to dismiss
    Whether the 2 weeks is cannon by Obsidian standards or not doesn’t matter
    It’s completely absurd, you could barely equip these conscripts in that time
    God forbid teach anything
    And it’s very obvious the NCR do more than you could possibly fit in 2 weeks
    I’d say they have a minimum of 4-6 weeks based on the bare basics of basic trainings the NCR offer
    Keep in mind this is not only objectively more practical, it’s more adhering to real US conscription full burn shortened training periods

  • @ComfortsSpecter

    11:20 Not really NCR Army much at all
    A separate not too Paramilitary but still more domestic branch that serves under De Facto superiors, that ofcourse being the superior Army Command
    Chief is just a rank of arbitrary culture, God knows what privileges it actually holds
    Personally I’d guess that it’s organization that treats itself as one straight rank progression
    Like the general Enlisted to NCO or some Police organizations
    Guesstimation: Chief is similar to a Major or Colonel in terms of a culture that lacks a Lieutenant Colonel and has very few individual of the General types while primarily resembling a high NCO
    For obvious maximum size and population retention reasons
