We are in Southern California. Our shemel ash is at least 50 years old and 60+feet tall. When we first moved here people told us it had to be trimmed. We gave in 3 times and regretted it every time. We appreciate the huge top because of the shade ir gives our yard and house
How are these trees? Just got a couple that are 6-9 year olds back in February and they’re struggling this summer. One is doing great and the other one has no leaves
These tend to be deciduous at times in the winter, but the rest of the year they really do not shed much. I find that only half of my trees lose their leaves at all.
Hey there Eli, hope all is well. Need your advice... I just picked up a 24 gal. Shamel Ash Tree yesterday, now just debating where exactly to set it. I was thinking in my lawn about 10ft to 15ft. away from my block fence so as it grows it won't become such a possible nuisance to my neighbors... My wife suggest in the rock landscape area about 5ft close to the wall... Yikes! What would you suggest?
Darn, thank you for mentioning the allergy part. Do you have any recommendations on shade trees that aren't bad on pollen? I know nothing about trees but I need some shade for my new home.
We planted Evergreen Ash tree 3 yrs ago.(Las Vegas, NV) This tree doesn't do well. The leaves burn out in summer time, like nothing left on the branches until next spring then new leaves grow but then burn out again in summer. Watering, fertilizing....we do it all but what could be the problem. Appreciate your advice.
I notice the trees I have in my turf areas grow much better then the desert areas. I felt like that was my experience with my ash in granite areas. I’d try deep watering once per week on top of your regular watering schedule. Maybe leaving the hose on ver VERY slow volume for a few hours. I hope that helps
@@elohagirl I dont think it has much to do with the heat. In Vegas I would plant it around end if Sept early Oct. My dad planted one of these in hotter climate than vegas and it did really well untill we rented our house and the tenant never watered it its roots weren't deep and it got taken out in a summer storm
Hey thanks for posting this we just planted 2 shamel ash trees and we couldn't find anything on youtube about them except for another video you did I think 5 years ago about them or something like that so I was happy to see another one. Not sure how ours are going to do out here in the desert but hoping they grow and do ok. Can you give any thoughts to eldarica pines and shumard oaks for here in AZ??
I've been growing a shamel ash for 8 months top part of tree is leaning about 14 ft tall and skinny it's a 24 gallon tree, have a line trying to get it to stand straight plus my leaves are somewhat curled saw yours are flat. Any help from one Hall to another Hall would be appreciated.
Thx Cheri, if leaves are curling I’d water it heavy with a slow drip 3 times per week. As far as the leaning, it’s hard to make a tree grow where you want it to... even if that is straight. You can put stakes on it but I’d remove them after 2 years since they can cause more harm than good. Thx!
@@AMSLandscaping I recommend turf-type tall fescue and/or heat-tolerant hybrid bluegrass instead of ryegrass in areas that Bermuda doesn't grow. I got the fescue to last all year long underneath trees.
Please do not suggest planting new ash trees at this present time in the US because of emerald ash borer crossing our nation. But if you already own a beautiful maturing ash, they can easily be protected until danger from infestation populations inevitably passes locally within 12 years.

Is it safe to plant now? Or should we wait until the Fall in Phoenix? Thanks!
Are these high litter? What about in summer? Any ideas next to the pool? Will the roots cause problems?

I have a few Arizona Ash they look almost identical. Both good variety of trees for Arizona and do really well here.
Thx for sharing! Yes, we planted 1 AZ Ash on the other side of the wall. Just love all the different varieties of Ash trees here in AZ.

How far apart were these planted? I planted mind 13 feet apart and I'm concerned that that is too close.

I’m not sure I know which trees are good for that. I’d consult with your local nursery.
@@AMSLandscaping How about Chinese Pistache? I have seen a lot around!!
Louise Wai yes, check out my video on the Chinese Pistache ua-cam.com/video/AxDAixUIEPQ/v-deo.html
Hey Eli, I saw your other video on the pistache being non allergenic. Do you know if the Tipu or sisso are?

How close to a house or septic system could you plant a Shamel Ash?
I’d recommend planting 20 feet, I did about 14 feet here but trim them away from the house annually.

@@AMSLandscaping thanks I've been watering it every 3 to 4 days for a few hours its planted in dirt haven't put sod in yet would mulch help or hurt?
What kind of grass did you grow in the shade?
Rye grass each year last longer in shaded areas but eventually dies out. I haven’t had luck with anything lasting all summer yet
Thanks.. one more question should I mulch around my shamel ash? It’s 5 years old. Has a water well around it. Gravel yard.
@@josephsinohui8007 mulch is great but not necessary as much as expanding the well around the tree. We see better results from that

What’s the spacing
We recommend 20 feet but if you plant them closer you may need to prune them more
