Bert Jansch - Paper Houses (live 1992).

- Recorded by Mel James, in the "Upstairs at Larry's" club in the pub.
The images of Bert are not from this gig, but all from the same year: 1992, stills from Jan Leman's Acoustic Routes film. The images at the end are drawn from the internet: the homeless people from various places around the world, and the houses mostly from Edinburgh and Hampstead - both places Bert knew well, and could even have been the places he was thinking of.
Judging from Bert's unnecessarily apologetic intro (he makes no mistakes!), this could be the first ever public performance of this song, which he can be seen demonstrating to John Renbourn in Leman's film. You could regard the song as his own "Streets of London", echoing his friend Ralph McTell's hit of 15 years earlier.
Mel says that Bert was playing a Fender guitar at the gig, not his customary Yamaha.
By the time he recorded the song for Toy Balloon in 1998, the guitar part had been thoroughly re-arranged.
One of my absolute favourite Bert songs! So interesting to hear it in this arrangement, clearly early days for the tune, different from the acoustic routes arrangement *and* different from the arrangement on Toy Balloon! It's lovely!

I paid tribute through this song
Come on Jon, I need to buy Bert Transcribed Vol 2 😀
Seriously though, thank you so much for this upload, I love this song.
I need to see that book too!! It's getting really frustrating waiting for it, especially as we are not being told the reason for the delay. (We were told the licensing issue had been sorted, but still no further info...) Paper Houses is not in it, though! You'll need to wait for book 3 for that one .... if you live long enough .... or you could just pay for a one-off ....
@@Jonpriley 🙂 I'm sure there is plenty to do 10 volumes, it must be so frustrating with the legal side of things.
I'd gladly pay for an accurate TAB of Paper Houses, it's a wonderful piece.
@@DjNikGnashers The really annoying thing about the hold-up was we offered way back to replace the problematic tune with one that would cause fewer (if any) problems, but they weren't having it. Something to do with the minimal re-formatting required - probably no more than an hour's work for someone their end. But of course it's in their hands, nothing we can do. (I suspect there may be other issues they're not telling us about...). Anyway, for this track, email me at jonriley64@gmail.com and we can discuss terms. (You won't have to remortgage your house...)
Thank you so much for this upload! So beautiful and so powerful with the video images. One of my favorite of Bert's songs and a wonderful performance.
I adore this song even though I prefer the rearranged version, this one is pretty as well.
where on earth do you get these recording ?
on a different note, are you planning on continuing with the lessons on avocet ?
An immense thanks extended to you Jon for all you've contributed.
Mel James emailed me an MP3. He knew Bert quite well back in the early 90s: Bert helped him set up a computer notation system, and sent him a lot of his own flles, and even one entire personal performance (of Be My Friend, which is elsewhere on my channel). Mel contacted me first asking for tabs, before revealing he had this fabulous collection of Bert's own material, in various formats. I used some of it in preparing Bert Transcribed Vol.2 (still not published...).
On Avocet, I kind of ran out of steam before the promised 10th (and final) lesson! To be honest, I don't have a lot to say on that section, as it's mostly just a vamp with all them jamming. I can't be sure of the exact shapes Bert plays, only approximate ones - because all the instruments kind of mesh together too much, and it hardly seems worth making a lesson on it.
There will be lessons on other tunes coming, though.. .
@@Jonpriley any idea when we can expect bert transcribed 2?
@@Ehzah8 The last I heard sounded a little more promising then it has for some months. The European rights are all cleared, and the publisher is (finally!) thinking of giving the copyright holder (in US/Canada) an ultimatum that they will pull the song if they get no agreement about a license. As I've said before, the publisher seems to have no problem with any amount of delay, as I guess it doesn't affect their business too much. It's the rest of us that get impatient! Especially as it's Bert;s 80th this year, an ideal time to get more publicity - one would think the publisher should be alert to that commercial potential... (By the way, this tune didn't make it to the book!)
@@Jonpriley Will be well worth the wait I'm sure. Thank you for sharing these videos and updating us on the status of the book.
@@Jonpriley any further movement on volume 2 Jon? Also, are you able tell us the songs that will be in there?
