The format of one person, who is a proven expert, critiquing a series of photos using his good judgement is more interesting and informative than having a format in which two people are arguing. The perspective of two different people does have it's advantages in certain cases but a single focused valid opinion gets to the nitty gritty quicker and more sensibly. I thought Mike Kelley's lone critique was one of the more satisfying episodes that this channel has offered. Also this is an exceptional marketing ploy. LOL However I do love Lee and Patrick's bickering on occasion.
Could not agree more sir
Agreed.
Massive plus to this comment. Especially love that he asked the photographers for context on the photo's purpose and their level. More of this kind of video please.
could not agree more!
This format for education and the other format for entertainment.
I'm not an architectural photographer but I found your critique fascinating and you commented on detail which I had missed. I'd love to see more like this. Thanks.
I wouldn't even put this video in the same category as the normal CTC ones. I absolutely enjoy the usual format of Patrick and Lee giving their overall impressions and debating/bickering over stuff, but this was on another level of specific detailed constructive criticism. I think that CTCs should stay the same, but fstoppers should put out another weekly or monthly video series where a photographer of a very specific expertise follows this format.
Agreed. Peter Hurley talking about portraits without having the scale explained to him every 30 seconds would be great.
My friend, this is free lessons! Take advantage of what he says before he realizes that half of what he is saying exists in the paid tutorials!
sorry to be so off topic but does someone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Leland Mark instablaster =)
@Roman Jaxx I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Really like the more detailed critique. Thank you Mike.
This is actually one of the best tutorials on here, even though it’s not one.
Thanks a bunch Mike! Trevor Schneider here. It's really great to get someone in the same field to look at an image with a new set of eyes to point out things you missed that can make it better. Thanks again!
11:45 that's some Mike Kelly math for ya!
Oh come on, 3 -3 - 2 was what he ment.
This is by far the best critique structure and video I have ever seen on the channel
Yep. I don't think anyone missed that bald guy's "in depth" comments: "Nooo maaan, how is this a good photo? You are out of your mind maaaan"
@@barisk6855 I like him personally but I can see how his personality is not for everyone, but this is far more informative. Just a different type of video, I like the CTCs as well.
Best episode yet. The context from the photographers and the expertise of Mike within this genre made the critiques feel a lot more precise, in-depth, and helpful. Would love to see more videos like this!
"The Harry Potter Slider" is the greatest thing I've heard in a while. Actually laughed out loud.
HamOnTheCob Exactly what I was thinking and then he said it out loud lol
I like this format with all the small tips that are hard to find in one place. Constructive criticism is far more valuable to me that the rock-paper-scissors rating competition. Thanks for your extremely helpful insights!
Really enjoyed it Mike, good job. Yes to more.
I really love, when pros share their job related secrets and tips openly. Excellent and very informative video.
Thank you for this format! I really liked it and would be happy to have sth like this more frequently. Thank you Mike and FS.
Thank you, this was a great episode Mike, more informative and better structured than other critique episodes. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks, Mike--Appreciate the critique!
This video was amazing! I'm just diving into learning about architectural photography. I learned more by Mr. Kelly's astute and artfully communicated observations than I could have in hours of podcasts and other sources. Thanks so much!
This was great Mike! Please keep doing these :)
phenomenal critique. Would love to see more like this. This could easily be turned into a standalone series and/or refined further where you only critique entry level photographers, 2+ years of professional work, 5+ yrs........ I would imagine each of these stages would be critiqued slightly differently and a dedicated video to the skill level would be wonderful.
Really well done. Lots of detail on not just what needed work but how to deal with it. Very helpful to have an expert in that genre reviewing the work.
Loved this kind of videos!!! Amazing analysis from Mike in technical and artistic terms. Learned a lot just from this video
Loved this. Thanks for doing it. Really valuable to understand the photographer's intent and environmental limitations.
great to see some context about the intent of the picture makes it so much easier and understandable. more to learn too!
Great suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and share your opinions.
Great job Mike. I really enjoyed this. It was such well though out criticism and with great suggestions for improvement of the images.
I am not into photography, but this video was very interesting to see what a professional photographer notices in what otherwise look like amazing photos.
The thing that bothers me most with Andreas Martin's shot at 23:55 is the lack of shadow for the small tree in the foreground. It jumped at me even more than the grass...
This was very informative and I would love to see more videos like this. Great content, keeping it positive and then adding what could make it better. Great job!
Great critiques! For a beginner photographer like myself that can't afford to go back to school, this channel is great!
love this format way more than the other. please do more!
Yes definitely more like this and in other genres too. Good one mike.
This was an awesome video! Thanks for the helpful tips and tricks Mike. Always a fan of your work.
very informative Mike. Please continue this as a series.
FANTASTIC thank you Mike!
that was amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, really learned a lot. I'd love to see another one where you have the file and as you critique you also make the changes so we can see the before and after! You are the man! Thank you!
I love this format - I love the positive vibe .
Love this format, thanks for doing this. I want more!
I like and learned a lot from these Architectural photography critic videos by Mike Kelly.. Please post more.. Thank you..
Amazing format.
The whole video felt very stress free and well paced.
While youre reading off the information of the picture, it also gives us viewers a moment to look at the picture and spot out something. Then compare it to what you say about the picture.
I really like it, hope more of this to come :)
Great job guys! I certainly like the normal format as well, but what a nice surprise! Extremely informative and I learned more from this video than most. Kudos!
Really enjoyed this Mike! Please do more.
Really great video , totally entretaining to watch ! And a lot to learn ! 👍👍
Please do more of these. This was great.
Really enjoyed this Mike, and great work holding it all together unaided. My only critique is that I wish it were longer!
Mike, job well done, Very informative an helpful. I like this format with just you talking about each entry, don’t need others either arguing with you or trying to outdo you with comments. Very well done!!
Men, your objective intuition is awesome!!! Thank you for all that guidance!
Late on this one but absolutely loved this, love the format of one expert focused on their own genre would love move of this from Mike Kelly 🙏🙏🙏
More like this, please!! Thank you!!
Love to see this level of critique, thanks!
Really love this! Please do it again
Fantastic video Mike. When shooting, your advice of the "front on furniture" rule always saves me. I love how you encourage people to use less processing too and to concentrate on composition rather than techniques.
I think for the pool shot in India, there was too much decking)foreground for mine in that shot. The pool needed to be closer to bottom of the frame. It's too far away. One neat trick I like to remove dead ground/foreground space is to use a tilt shift but to get the camera down close to the ground. Far away from a building you can't tell how low the camera is to the ground, but it really shortens dead ground space. I feel that's what was throwing me off in that shot too. Too much wasted space on the deck. You were correct with the crop too, it looked much better.
Great shots everyone! Arch photography is an incredibly difficult medium and good to see it talked about it.
2 thumbs up. Best constructive criticism in a long time. Learned a lot.
Mike, this is an excellent critique. The very specific suggestions you give are very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Quick story.
My first commercial real estate job was for a leasing company who wanted a shot of the entrance to a new shopping center, and the prominent building was a Good Earth restaurant (all are out of business now). So I waited till there were no people in the shot and very few cars in the parking lot. The lighting was perfect and the sky had these beautiful fluffy white clouds contrasting with a deep blue sky. I was very proud of the image I presented to the customer. They took one look at it and said “this is terrible. There’s no people and hardly any cars. We can’t use this. We want prospective businesses who lease with us to see a busy shopping center, with cars and people, and lots going on”. I was very disappointed, but it taught me a valuable lesson, and that’s to really think it through before capturing the image, and/or better communication with the client.
I have to agree with everyone that applauded to this video. It's been the most educational video that I saw on youtube in a while. I'm a documentary wedding photographer but after watching these Mike's critiques I feel like starting to play a bit in this genre...
Definitely a format to explore with other photographers as well.
Great video and critiques, and also some of these photos/locations like WOW
very informative. Thanx. I like this format very much, it goes to the point.
The barn shot is perfect as is.
Thanks a Lot Mike, learning a lot with you.. Saludos from Chile
Loved this. Gives me some ideas on how I might approach architectural and interior renders. 😉
I love it when fstoppers bring people like Mike Kelly and Elia Locardi for the critiques. They give the advise and feedback a considerable amount of weight.
By far one of the best critiques on the channel.
Awesome critique and video!
Excellent video, Mike. I took away some good tips from here too.
This was excellent. Thank you
Thanks man. very informative
this was great, good points and always the conceit that he didn't know if what he wanted was even possible. More of this please
This is really beneficial content for everyone, well done.
Mike, pretty please do these one a month!
Cheers.
I looked at my portfolio as Mike was critiquing these images to see if I made the same mistakes. Thanks Mike, I'm glad to know I didn't! haha. Although I did spot a few things now that I didn't realize before. Keep doing more videos like this. It's so beneficial.
love mike!!! when i started at high end firm this past year, the firm kept hing other photographers to do their shots and didn't like the results. I mentioned to them how mike kelley is the man to see for shots, and they hired him for a project! I was so excited because i thought i might get the chance to meet him and talk to him. Unfortunately my boss never took me to shoots =( great interview.
That's pretty cool. If it's true then it sounds like Mike owes you a referral fee :)
Awesome! I loved it, could learn so much from this video. Would be happy if you do more critiques of this kind!
Your critiques are so good and humble. You manage to give advice without sounding snobby. Your comment around 18:00 is a great example. I've seen so many critiques where it is clear even from the UA-cam video that what the critic is suggesting isn't possible and they could have done no better. So their advice is essentially "defy physics". That isn't helpful. Your more pensive critique is a welcome change!
Very useful critiques, thanks 😊
I met Mike in Sweden this year on our Kick off with Husfoto at Högbo bruk!
Very instructive, thank you!
This is an amazing critique and most of the submissions looked stunning in the first place but Mike, but from Mike's critique I can really see how they could be improved further.
Great job! very informative.
I really like you as part of the team. 👍Your perspective is very different since you usually do a different style of photography that I don't know much but Ill like to try after hearing you.
The traditional Critique The Community format is fun and informative. But this format is far more helpful to photographers who are specializing in a specific genre.
I hope to see more of this type of critique in the future
More please, Mike.
Hmmmm . . . yeah . . . well . . . all I can say is that was the BEST Fstoppers critique video I've ever watched! Thank you for taking the time to go through all of those photos and sharing you're expertise!
Im all for Mike Kelly to take over Fstoppers.
Awesome advice mate. Stuff I would never even notice
Thank you Mike
Wonderful video thanks you for sharing
great video. More of this please :)
Great video, cheers
I loved this!!!
Very nice Mike! I am looking into real state and commercial. You da man!
I laughed so hard at the Harry Potter slider.. 😂 😂 😂
TheNiteinjail #metoo
Thanks, really good video, highly educational
This is the best photo critique I have seen on this channel. I am not much of a fan of the five finger scoring, with somewhat subjective critique method that is usually done. A big difference with, Mike Kelley’s critique, is having some context of the photos created, provided by the image makers. Combined with detailed critiques by a qualified professional in the particular photography field makes it a much more valuable experience. I would encourage Fstoppers to consider using this format in the future. Great job Mike Kelley.
Great video. Loved it
Awesome video guys!
Great job flying solo Mike.
i like this a lot better than the normal CTC. There's not bizarre scenarios where you can make the perfect picture by changing everything, Mike understood what the picture was shot for and gave his best advice using the picture that was there.
very interesting video, good job!
HEY! Halifax made it on fstoppers! Home town proud
Great critique! Liked the format, detailed but nicely paced and really appreciate how as harsh as Mike is with some critiques, he can still accept that maybe there was no better angle or time of day to shoot.
"you got the harry potter slider and went to max!" haha I'm stealing that one - so true! Great critique I'm starting to really appreciate good architectural work and its nuances.
