  • I managed to remove a chuck that had been on my lathe for many, many years. Not by using gears to lockup the spindle, but using a leather strap wrapped around the largest pully.

Instead of placing the wrench on the jaw, you can clamp the jaws on a hex bar and place the wrench on the bar. That exerts force more in alignment with how the chuck was designed to hold stress.

Yes, thank you for your comment. I think that a hex bar is a better option too, but that is not something I had laying around at that time.

I tried using the gears to lock the lathe and now my back gear has a couple of missing teeth. 🤬🤬🤬 You live and learn. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Sorry to hear that. But at least you tried and you learned! Were you trying to remove the chuck when the teeth broke off? I hope the chuck came loose.

Yes and no. Yes I was trying to remove the chuck and no it didn’t come lose😂😂. But that’s life, now I know. I think the biggest hassle will be pulling the top of the lathe apart to get the gears out to braze the teeth back on. It’s not at the top of the to do list yet though so as I always say
“Why do it today, if I can put it off ‘till tomorrow” 👍👍

Mild steel 3" diameter what's the biggest cut u can make with any cutter? 0.100" @ 0.010/rev?
    With HSS?
I just got my 13 and I'm having trouble getting more then 0.030" @ 0.006"/rev at top speed of 940 I think before the belt slips. I've dressed it but I think it needs to be replaced. Is the belt meant to be tensioned when the belt handle cams over?

electromechanical stuff - The belt is tensioned by the weight of the motor and a spring, but only if I have the lever that lifts the motor in the right (downward) position. It is the position where the lever stands in front of the door of the “engine-compartment”. I don’t know if the tension is adjustable. Maybe the spring is adjustable?

How tight is the chuck thread supposed to be? My SB came with a couple of chucks and they are really lose even when I’m halfway through the thread. Can’t imagine the spindle thread being so worn

I don’t know. Maybe the chucks have the wrong thread? Did you measure all the threads?

A center binder, aha so that is what ‘my invention’ is called! Thanks 😎

A claw hammer and a crescent wrench??? Really???

Yes, worked for me . But the main issue was how to get a good grip on the axle without locking (and damaging) the gears, that’s what the strap is for.

Buy a strap wrench that plumbers use does the same thing
