- In todays video we headed up to the Northern California Coast to do some bottom fishing. We mainly used Nomad Squidtrex 130's, while Kellen used a hi low rig tipped with squid. The Squidtrex were fun to use, the fish hammered them. We appreciate all the support to everyone that watches our videos. Thanks for watching!

Hey guys, thanks for watching the video! 120feet is the rule for inshore rockfish, however you also need to check the 20fathom line. You can’t be beyond that. Most area that are 120ft or shallower are within the fathom line so just double check your map. Here is a link to fish and game website to check it out:
cdfw.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c00c82e1f32a49e99c747e2411e3439e
I love your interaction with the game wardens. I have interacted with California wardens for about 50 years while hunting and fishing and never had a problem. Treat them with respect and they will do the same with you!🙂
That’s right if you treat them with respect you’ll get treated the same!
Thanks for clarifying the comments about keeping each fishermen’s catch separate. Boat limits apply to rockfish! Keep on posting! Tight lines. Cheers.
Thanks David! Tight lines 🎣
You guys are the best...Keep up the good work.
Thanks Troy! 👍
those were some big waves! good fishing
They were not small, thanks for watching!
FYI, the inshore depth restriction is the 20 fathom line as defined by GPS waypoints. There are areas where you could be fishing 115/120ft depths and be seaward of that line, which would be illegal per DFG. Other than that, really good video! I'm going to do a test between squidtrex and chase baits. Let the testing begin!
I was going to say the same thing. The 20 fathom line is a series on gps points that connect. It's not by depth. Gps points are on Ca Fish and Wildlife, load them on your chart plotter so you're always legal.
The warden boats are using radar to track where boats are fishing. It's easy to drift past the line if you're not paying attention.
@CZAR61211 You are correct, I should have been more clear its the 20 fathom line. If you look at the fish and game map a large majority of the 20 fathom line is under 120 feet. Alot of the fathom line up north here is even beyond 120 feet.
@fishingfool2644 thats a great idea for all anglers. I am going to leave a link here to the maps provided by fish and game.
@CZAR61211 also, good luck with the squidtrex, they are a blast to fish!
Good job guys you killing
Thanks Oleg you are the man
Is the insulation performance of the Buffalo Gear Kill Bag good? I might need one.
It has great insulation, we have been very pleased with it so far.
Fire video per usual! 🔥🔥
Thanks man! 👍
can yall do a boat tour? cause your boat seems awesome
We will have to do that in a video soon!
New to your channel but have seen several of your vids. Great info thanks for sharing. I have fished Bay Area salt for over 50 years. I have a question on one thing you said that F&G want everyone to have a separate space for there RF catch. Where in the regs did you see that. Thks again for sharing..
Thanks for the comment here. You know we were verbally told from a reputable source however when I look at the regs I can’t it. Perhaps we were given bad information or maybe something that was going to be put in place and didn’t go through. I’ll do some research and if we were wrong I’ll correct it in our next video.
I have some notes for you and the viewers from the fish and game, check it out. I would do separate buckets based on what I am reading:
Under CCR T14 27.60(c) on page 16 of the Ocean Regulation Booklet, a boat limit would apply at all times when multiple fishers are taking fin fish. These means that regardless of where or how the fish are separated, all passengers and the captain of vessel can be held liable for violations pertaining to the fish onboard.
However, in practice doing as you stated is helpful for you and your passengers to account for fish properly and to allow our officers a way to more easily check for compliance. Keep in mind that the section referenced above, like all of our regulations are discretionary and up to each individual officer to evaluate. Commonly, when we see this and there is a single violation related to a particular fishers separated catch, we will only issue a citation to that individual. But there are still circumstances where this may not be appropriate. As an example if no one claims the fish as “theirs” or if there are several violations onboard, officers may choose to cite the entire vessel.
would you fish the squidtrex at 300-500 feet. If so, dropper loop, carolina rig, or...? How do you get it to the bottom?
Yes absolutely. I would head over to nomads website and check out all their squidtrex. They come in sizes from 1/6oz all the way up to 21oz. We were using the 130s in the 100ft range. I would use the 14 or 21oz version they have.
Nice video!
How far north did you go?
Did you find rock piles or outcroppings or just fish anywhere on the bottom?
Nice fish.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Doug. We were up by ft Bragg. We were fishing under water reef structure, anywhere from 50-120ft.
What kind of spinning reel do you recommend for the shallow water rockfish? What size braid do you like to use?
Just responded to your other comment 👍👍👍
Sweet vid! How did the tentacles on the squidtrex hold up to those toothy fish? Just got some myself. Cant wait to try em up here in Oregon!
Thanks man! They hold up pretty good, every once and awhile the appendages get a little beat up. But that vibration in the squid feels great in the rod. Fun bite too!
Insane you hooked that salmon! I’m sure you “threw” it back 😂 JK Nice video bro!
Haha it was crazy. They sure don’t like being hooked in the back haha. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Have you guys seen an improvement in mpg since the conversion? What do you guys burn now?
It depends on the speed we go. I’d say overall yes, madmac trolling is what it is, you can only do so much to get good mpg at that speed. Most boats are under heavy load at that speed.
Are you sure that China Rockfish wasn't a Quillback Rockfish?
Yeah it was a china, the fish and game came on the boat and checked all the fish.
@@DDFishingCo Thanks for getting back. The picture was a quick one and I didn't get a good book. Up here, Quillbacks are much more common than China Rockfish.
@@AKFish2023we didn’t catch any quillbacks on this trip but we did catch a lot of gopher that we made sure to release. Sometimes it’s so tough identifying these rockfish unless you do it often haha. There was definitely a few that we had to double check.
I need some squid traxs 🔥🔥🔥what size did you guys get??
I believe they said size 130
🤙🏿
We used 130 for the inshore. I would use the 110, 130, and 150 for inshore depending on depth and current. We love using them.
I thought the minimum dept is 300 feet now
It was the 50 fathom line for the month of April, that is now closed and only inshore is open, the 20 fathom line, less than 120ft. Later in the year the deep water opens back up again. I would check out the regs online it breaks it down by month.
Your price point for those Squid jigs is almost $20 a pop! breaking off 3-4 times a trip will be costly, unless you have the scratch to pay! Breaking off is very common in the shallows!
Totally valid concern, however I’d look at it this way. How much is a box of squid, how much is a hi low rig, how much is lead, how much lead do you lose? These last awhile and you can use them over and over again as long as you are careful. We have found these to be very good with not getting snagged. A hi low rig you are trying to get your weight on the bottom. With the squidtrex, you just need to find bottom and jig it above the bottom. We haven’t lost any Squidtrex yet, but definitely have been careful about not letting it just dead soak on the bottom. It also depends, each reef is totally different.
I jig all day with swimbaits, not hi/low bait rigs. I also use ho-de style diamond jigs and big tube jigs. If I lose a few, it's way under $20 (like $8 each). Plus, when the tails and plastics get ripped off or beaten up from the teeth of fish/rocks, I can tie on a new swimbait/tube.
The squidtrex and vertrex are pretty hardy. The plastic holds up pretty good. We haven't had to retire any of them yet. The only ones we have lost were on shore based missions where its much easier to snag. We wouldnt promote them unless we thought they were good, they are versatile, like a paddle tail swimbait. The vibrations in both lures are great, we think these can catch many different species in the fresh and salt. We love paddle tails too!
Just curious where is that boat launch. I fish mostly South side never been to the north. TIA.
We were up in ft Bragg 👍
Great video. Wanting to try my squidtrex on the inshore rockfish. Can I ask where you launched out of. The reg saying no boat limits is new this year? Keep the quality vids coming
Thanks man, those squidtrex are fun. They vibrate when you jig them, they have great bottom feel too. They aren't too snaggy either. About the boat limits, we were verbally told from a reputable source however when I look at the regs I can’t it. Perhaps we were given bad information or maybe something that was going to be put in place and didn’t go through. I’ll do some research and if we were wrong I’ll correct it in our next video.
@@DDFishingCo Do you fish them “as is” or add a hook on its belly. I added a treble but your comment about not getting snagged makes me think I should take off the extra hook. Thanks
I would double check the rules, I don’t think you are allowed three hooks for rockfish. Since you would have two on back (the stock ones) plus the treble. You could do 1 treble on bottom and 1 j off the back. I don’t think it would be too snaggy. Personally if I were to run a bottom hook I would run a j hook off the bottom.
I have some notes from fish and game, check it out… I would still do separate buckets because they can ticket the whole boat for a violation. See below:
Under CCR T14 27.60(c) on page 16 of the Ocean Regulation Booklet, a boat limit would apply at all times when multiple fishers are taking fin fish. These means that regardless of where or how the fish are separated, all passengers and the captain of vessel can be held liable for violations pertaining to the fish onboard.

As an example if no one claims the fish as “theirs” or if there are several violations onboard, officers may choose to cite the entire vessel.
@@DDFishingCo Thanks for the follow up.
You're not allowed fishing any fishes deeper than 20fa when you have rockcod onboard.
That’s correct, that’s why we went back in to drop the rockfish off to go for the sand dabs.
You guys need to learn how to identify your fish..
What did they identify wrong?
I’m curious also they all looked rite to me
Yeah 2 of the blues were actually blacks at least
using spinning rods for rockfishing tells you all you need to know
@@LettuceLandlight tackle shallow water small spinning tackle is pretty fun
I love the sound of the drag going out on real
We do too! Haha
What kind of spinning reel do you recommend for the shallow water rockfish? What size braid do you like to use?
We use Okuma Salina they are super smooth drag and are made for the salt application, a 4000 size would be great for the shallow water stuff. You can do a 6000 like us if you do shallow and deep water.
Oh and 65lb braid
