Had to bust out the fly rod to do a little spillway fishing! Hope you guys enjoy! :)

Need some floatant for your flies.
Also I used to tie a floating fly on first then a sinking fly attached to it. Sometimes you get the high fish sometimes you get the underwater fish.
I had to stop fly fishing because I almost hooked a few people on the backcast. Now I just use a clear bobber.
Floatant is a must. The powder in a bottle or the gel or both

I grew up fishing that creek, Things have changed so much, When I was 10 years old I could catch 1lb bluegills in there on flies early in the mornings. As a kid I would sat on that wall where the ducks were sitting. I am now a fishing guide, I have fished all the lakes in that area.

That hill behind where you were fishing was National fish hatchery. But wS was shut down by President Carter. The pool area below the spillway has changed so much, there isn't as many fish there. Going down stream there were small pools that held good fishing.

The fly you were using is a little too small for a bass my guy! When I started out fly fishing I would buy my stuff at Cabelas cause they have an area just for fly fishing. I eventually switched over to making my own flies. Awesome content!

There was more and bigger gills before some people decided to change the spillway pool below the dam. That pool area were the ducks were sitting was 2 plus feet deep. With an average of 15 inches there out the entire area down to where the creek curved.
Anything that is some type of mix of different breeds I just call hybrid bluegills
What’s up brother just wanted to drop a few suggestions. You should be fishing two flies, on small water I highly recommend a dry dropper. Pheasant tail or midge nymph is a good dropper, safe bet for small water. mayfly and midge nymphs are almost always present. Look at the underside of rocks in the water see what’s present and learn your bugs. I would highly recommend upgrading your line ASAP to a rio gold or scientific angler amplitude. Next step would be upgrading your rod. Moderate quality fly rods start around 300-400 range. A sage foundation outfit in a 5wt would be a easy way to kill two birds with one stone. When purchasing a fly rob you want to spend all the money on rod and line. Good luck out there keep going with the fly fishing videos and welcome to the wormhole. Lol
You should use a small popper with legs. Small bluegill will tear at the legs. BIG bluegill and bass eat the whole popper.
A day catching bluegills on light gear is a lot better than a day catching nothing on heavier gear. I love micro fishing especially when I can't get out to open water.

For bass and pike buy a fly known as a wooly bugger and fish it like a crank bait but with your hands

Try some bigger sinking flies for bigger bluegill. Also small poppers work for bigger gills and bass
