Not a single individual thing you have to do at McD's, at any station, can't be done easily and without a lot of thought or effort. But what you really can't capture here is the soul-crushing vibe. The way they're run, what it feels like to be in that hot kitchen all day sweating over burgers, dealing with angry customers and tense interactions, trying to clean a half-full lobby while also being attentive to the registers, making sure every little thing you need to be checking on gets dealt with all through the day. Then you're in 5 days a week to do it again, but your hours keep changing and you have to check the schedule every week, can't plan any kind of life event because getting time off is super inconsistent and you're forced to call around until you can get someone to take your shift. And you may not have 'weekends' because your days off are scattered, often you're not given 8 hour shifts so they're not even limited to putting you on the floor more than five days in a row. And PTO? Getting paid to not work? Impossible.
It's rarely too much to handle in any given moment, but the absolute tedium, the repetitive strain and the ceaseless torment of having to be constantly on the grind to keep the paychecks flowing, it's hard to get much positive out of that except respect for the people who remain forced to exist in that paradigm.

When I worked there I just got out of an abusive relationship and was hoping for a new chapter but was instead met with a manager who instantly neglected me and refused to train me, as well as co workers who refused to listen to me. i worked at mcdonalds for about 3 weeks last year. heres a few fun little facts about my experience there.
-everyone misgendered me. not even just the customers. all the employees (except 1 he was so chill) and both my managers.
-speaking of which, my managers were blatantly transphobic and gave me a female outfit and told me to use the female washrooms knowing i was trans
-on my first day, they put me on fries before they taught me how to do fries. on rush hour. in the most popular location in a busy city. i was 14 btw
-my coworkers did not listen to any instructions and never taught me anything when the managers asked, so i kinda just had to learn everything by watching others.
-they barely clean the ice cream machine (at that location anyway, i dont speak for other locations)
-i ended up having multiple panic attacks per day because of all of the above so i decided to quit after a few weeks. my manager proceeded to yell at me (yes, she YELLED at me.) and tell me that i was unprofessional and couldnt keep a job.
anyway guys mcdonalds is such a great place to work 10/10 do recommend best job of my life. shoutout to ben tho he was a real og

i'm so sorry that happened to you. i'm trans too, so i know how soul-crushing it is to constantly be misgendered.
companies like mcdonalds hardly ever have any universal anti-discrimination policies for their managers. one of my trans friends worked at mcds for 3 years & while she hated the work itself, the manager there was very accepting & actively tried to make the environment inclusive. that SHOULD be the company standard for every location, but ofc mcd's don't care about worker health & safety.

This kind of reminds me of when the big wigs from the company I used to work for would come into the stores to film their monthly propaganda things about how great the company was doing. They’d set up in the middle of one of the main aisles and you’d constantly see customers and employees giving the cameras interesting looks in the background. They came to one of the stores I worked at and oh man people were tripping over themselves to try to make things look perfect. The next night I got to hear people complaining about how annoying it was and how they were in the way constantly.

when i worked at an ice cream place, there was this little kid who would come in and stand next to the entrance to behind the counter and watch us make ice cream, cones, shakes, mix stuff together, etc. he found the process and work INTERESTING and asked my manager if he could shadow us one day. he was also a super young kid, so it honestly brought so much light into shifts and his excitement was adorable and genuine. this guy is treating fast food workers like some novel little thing, glamorizing minimum wage part time jobs that usually don't treat the employees well at all. there's a difference between his curiosity, and the kind of curiosity that makes hard shifts better, like that little kid.

Minimum wage in the UK is £4.81 for under 18s and £6.83 for 18 to 20 before finally getting to £9.18 for 21-22 and £9.50 for 23 and older. It’s also more frequent than not to have police outside and inside McDonalds due to the amount of shit that goes down there. Basically bouncers for bigger crime ones.

I worked at a Hotel as a receptionist and I was by myself at 18, I had nobody to work with me every shift and they made me work 8 hour turnarounds every other day. I worked a 24 hour shift as well because nobody decided to show up for their shifts and I was responsible for working it. Was terrible and I only got paid 9 an hour.

As someone who works at Taco Bell. I can say it is not worth the $14 (below minimum wage) that i make. Granted I have learned to become more patient with fast food workers and now have more empathy towards them. But it is so not worth it for a life long career. Customers are horrible and half of them think they are entitled to their food and that we should bend over backwards for them so their every need is met. I’m sorry Sharon but I have 10 more orders to take and make and get out so I will not worry about the state of your taco. You are going to eat it anyways.

Like, imagine you get an email from your supervisor that says McDonald’s decided to sponsor a UA-camr and you have to get your restaurant ready for him to come film a video, and you have to let all your employees know to look their best and act their best for that entire day. It’s like getting ready for a health inspection, omg.

The way he's having fun in the video made me furious because when you're an employee there, you're not even allowed to stand still for a couple of seconds or talk. I used to work at a McDonald's in the UK and it was probably the most traumatising job experience I've ever had, I ended up developing insomnia and an anxiety disorder because of how incredibly exhausting it was to work there and how I was being treated by my managers. If you really want to build transferable skills, just get any other job

I worked in a Subway, Pizza Hut and dominoes. Tried Arbys. All of those jobs make my heart jump and my stomach flip thinking about them. Holding your pee for 8+ hours while customers try to break in after close, micromanagement, harassment, and the soul-crushing vibe of overstimulation. Starting fast food work at 16 helped develop my eating disorder, self harm, and drug use. I only escaped in the past couple years after 15 years of servitude. All of these jobs are traumatizing exploitation.

"Fast food jobs can provide good life experience and MAYBE you can even spend your whole life attempting to climb the ladder for a corporation that will barely give you a 50 cent raise"
The way they always try to sell you on the idea that you could work for McDonald's for the rest of your life and become the ceo. Best case scenario you become a shift manager or something
