Packing for family events... always a challenge. For my family, I have had success with Codenames Duet recently. Cribbage is a classic for my family, and word games are generally good, so Quiddler often goes in- this class includes Kiitos and Paperback now. (I actually sent my daughter away with my copy of Friday, because she was isolating before starting classes in the UK) But for my nuclear family, light works well, so Clank! is a good middleweight larger box option. And my personal favorite is Race for the Galaxy, so I almost always have it with me, for recharge time, or if I can find a group to play. PS: You sold me on Calico- I have it preordered with Cascadia.
This is my absolute favorite video on your channel, simply due to the great interactions between the two of you. It just feels so... Cozy? Warm? Either way, it's great! We haven't really got the opportunities for holiday parties in the last year, but we've played a lot of games over Skype with family. Some favorites have been Dominion, That's Pretty Clever, and Phase 10 dice. (60% #teamthinker, 40% #teamthemer)

Lovely video! Really like the channel concept too. Subscribed! If you want something to scratch the same itch as Biblios that won't bore #teamthemer quite so much, I'd recommend Stefan Dorra's "For Sale" if you want something light, or Emerson Matsuuchi's "Century: Spice Road (possibly the oh-so-pretty Golem Edition) for something a bit more medium-weight. Both titles offer a sense of progression by having two phases like Biblios (auctioning then selling properties in For Sale, building up your cards then focusing on deliveries in Century), they're both accessible for new-ish game players, and they both do a better job (IMO) of implementing their themes than Biblios.
I love Maggie's ideology on purchasing her own Christmas presents! Sometimes that's what one must do to get the games one wants. Otherwise, my partner might buy me a copy of Biblios just because they like it, 🤦♂️...come-on partner! That wasn't even on my wishlist!

I love how you guys were so determined to keep it to 5 each but even before the end you were discussing ways to add more haha! If I was going to visit family I'd probably take Love Letter as a quick, light family game that even the kids can get into. And maybe Dixit. My brother is the only one who I know would even be interested in anything heavier than those, they tend to shy away from anything not classic/mainstream (you know, Monopoly, Cluedo, Guess Who, etc). Oooh, I'd try to sell them on Concept, too, as an alternative to charades or Pictionary.
Have you tried them on Just One? And for the kids/adults alike Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is a rowdy laugh that is not too serious. Just got to ease them all slowly into games without them realising... like boiling a crab... 😆

I just discovered your channel and I am so impressed, I hope you keep releasing lots of videos. It's so nice that you two look at the games with a different viewpoint and that you boil down reviews to the fundamental question "Why Own It?". With the amount of video reviewers these days, it might be difficult to stand out and you did an excellent job. Looking forward to trying Wingspan: Oceania expansion (any recommendations for Australian birds?) with my family, and I will also bring Raiders of the North Sea, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, and some cards I made last year to play Love Letter, No Thanks and Coup.

Good video! Because of COVID here in the U.S., I'm only seeing my parents for Christmas, and I'm bringing Fox in the Forest, Hanamikoji, and Agricola because those are the games my mom likes, and she's the one who games with me. :) I kinda wanna see if their nearby FLGS might have Nidavellir, though.... Or I could just bring Lost Cities: Rivals, which is also a bidding set collection game--and it's been on my shelf of shame for months! OR finally buy The Crew, which I've been eyeing for a long time.... Hmmmm. Might have to gift myself a couple games!
We had the crew for a long time but were not keen on the 2 player changes (not for any good reason as I've heard it is good at 2 but we wanted to have the full experience) so waited until just this last weekend where we played it live stream on BGA. It was surprisingly difficult in a good way. We got to level 10 in a couple of hours on the stream and looking forward to playing more. Great that you can game with your mum!!! We can't get mine past Just One or For Sale but we keep trying 😅 wishing you a wonderful time with your parents and glad you can be together ❤🎄

Ohh the Crew! We've had that since the beginning of lockdown but didn't want to play it with only two... we're actually live streaming with some friends teaching it to us on Dec 11th...! Strangely we never quite took to Azul and so haven't played any of the others in the series. Hope you're both safe and doing well, happy holiday season 🥰
Yikes, a 20-hour drive sounds rough! It's too bad self-driving cars aren't a thing yet. Then you could play games, but it might be hard to set up a board in a car. Ah well. My favorite of those games is Biblios! Well, I haven't played most of the other games, but Bibios is still pretty high on my list of filler games :D Looking forward to trying the roll & write variant! A couple light games I play with my family include Telestrations and The Great Dalmuti. Good fun! I sent both my sisters copies of The Crew last year, and they seemed to enjoy it. @@ThinkerThemer I did back a copy of Calico, so I'll probably send that to my sister (I have two sisters) who is more of a cat person. Of course, then there's the risk that one of them doesn't like the game receive. Oh well. It's the thought that counts, right? :D I'm in California near San Francisco. Not sure if anyone outside of California knows where San Jose is. Maybe techies or fans of the HBO show, Silicon Valley. Oh, Tesla is nearby too, but right now, the cars seem to have just enough self-driving capability to be dangerous. But I think the technology will get there eventually :)

Nidavellir is going on the list before Xmas. Looks really good. My family isn't really into most board games (I've tried Ticket to Ride and Sushi Go which fell flat) but they love trick taking games which I think is culturally familiar to them. I'm planning on just taking The Crew as other games we play only require 1-2 decks of standard playing cards.

Distances in Australia are so huge. In Europe you can cross three or more countries in 20 hours :-) My family doesn´t play games, so when I travel with my wife to meet them we take small games that work well for two: Targi, Hanamikoji, Oh my goods!, Jaipur, San Juan, the fox in the forest,etc... by the way, I played Friday many times and I still haven´t beaten it! so hard!
Haha that is so true! We get very used to driving long distances although a 20hr trip is not something we do often but we have a dog who we couldn't bear to leave at home this year. Great video and list! The two of you make a cute couple and have great chemistry. I have been trying to get my hands on Calico and think that game will work well for my family. For whatever reason, Stockpile is always a big hit with my family (could be because most of us are boring finance types), but we do love it.

All I Want For Christmas on repeat can make a 20hr drive bearable :P Also, just heard the Dolly Parton cover, it isn't as good as Mariah's, not unsurprisingly.
One time we did the same drive and we listened to Mariah's entire discography in chronological order. I think it went for around 16 hours. Have I mentioned that Maggie is a very patient woman? 🙃
A different selection of games there. I'm only familiar with half of them. Nidavellir was one I was interested in trying. Looking at the games on your shelf, I thought Taverns of Tiefenthal would have been a good choice too, quick and not too complex.
Very different to our usual taste! We are most likely to be playing heavy euros at a four player count... but family means a bit of a change of pace, and we still enjoy fun lighter games. We do own Taverns, nice and light. Maybe still a bit complex for my mum...! Will you be playing games over Xmas?
@@ThinkerThemer Definitely will be playing games over the holiday season. My main gaming partner is my daughter (12) and school holidays is almost upon us. We are half way through our Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion campaign so will finish that off. We have a back catalog of games to play. The rest of my family are non gamers, so it's really only party games or games which cater for a larger group like No Thanks, The Mind etc. We do like Tournament at Camelot though. That's a good trick taking game with a twist.
I also could Never understand the appeal of Biblios... If it was the only option, yeah, why not? But I'm so glad that's not the case 😅 Maybe it's a themer thing... (which I just discovered I am too, thanks to you guys!)
At the risk of losing more credibility with everyone else but gaining more with you.... we've followed her around Australia twice and visited Vegas everytime she's been on.... 😂 One time on this same drive I made Maggie listen to her entire discography in chronological order over 16hrs. She is so patient and I must marry her immediately. 🙃

I love your channel! I've been looking for an all women review channel and you are both so lovely to watch. When I get to the end of these game list videos I forget most of the games mentioned though. Would you be able to add a list of the games somewhere? I get that the game review trend is that youtubers don't want people to skip the video completely and just read the list, but you are both so awesome and joyful to watch, I think people will get a lot out of hearing your thoughts and watch even if they can see the list.

Whoops! It's a big rabbit hole. I suggest not looking at all the creative takes on bullet journalling and just do the minimal set up as per the inventor and follow his video and use if for a productivity tool. But then I'm more a thinker than a themer so Maggie might love to decorate her bujo and make it a hobby like a lot of people do (rather than a simple productivity tool).
😂😂 yes if she gets hooked by anything she goes all in and would never stop at minimal set up. Like the time we tried surfing and I came home to a surfboard in the house and she had many different wetsuits. And then x100 other hobbies in the past 9 years lol. Keeps things interesting I guess hehe
Biblios and Dr Finn is Amazing. Maggie probable does not like it because there is little to NO theme. She may like Herbaceous more, same designer and Beth Sobel art from Pencil First Games. Not 2 part game but a bit of that same first part of the game choice.
Yes she was very disappointed with the theme implementation after reading what it should've been about... having said that she does like 6nimmt and tolerates for sale much more 🤔 Herbaceous is a great recommendation, we've never played it but I've always admired the art (and actually never connected the dots that it was illustrated by Beth Sobel!!!) I just discovered your channel and I am so impressed, I hope you keep releasing lots of videos. It's so nice that you two look at the games with a different viewpoint and that you boil down reviews to the fundamental question "Why Own It?". With the amount of video reviewers these days, it might be difficult to stand out and you did an excellent job.
Looking forward to trying Wingspan: Oceania expansion (any recommendations for Australian birds?) with my family, and I will also bring Raiders of the North Sea, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, and some cards I made last year to play Love Letter, No Thanks and Coup.

Good video! Because of COVID here in the U.S., I'm only seeing my parents for Christmas, and I'm bringing Fox in the Forest, Hanamikoji, and Agricola because those are the games my mom likes, and she's the one who games with me. :) I kinda wanna see if their nearby FLGS might have Nidavellir, though.... Or I could just bring Lost Cities: Rivals, which is also a bidding set collection game--and it's been on my shelf of shame for months! OR finally buy The Crew, which I've been eyeing for a long time.... Hmmmm. Might have to gift myself a couple games!
We had the crew for a long time but were not keen on the 2 player changes (not for any good reason as I've heard it is good at 2 but we wanted to have the full experience) so waited until just this last weekend where we played it live stream on BGA. It was surprisingly difficult in a good way. We got to level 10 in a couple of hours on the stream and looking forward to playing more. Great that you can game with your mum!!! We can't get mine past Just One or For Sale but we keep trying 😅 wishing you a wonderful time with your parents and glad you can be together ❤🎄

What a fun list! I am looking forward to playing The Crew. Jared’s parents really like trick taking games. I also want to introduce them to Azul: Summer Pavilion. They have played and enjoyed Azul. I thought Biblios was just okay, but wouldn’t say no to playing it again. I hope you have a great holiday 😀
Ohh the Crew! We've had that since the beginning of lockdown but didn't want to play it with only two... we're actually live streaming with some friends teaching it to us on Dec 11th...! Strangely we never quite took to Azul and so haven't played any of the others in the series. Hope you're both safe and doing well, happy holiday season 🥰
Yikes, a 20-hour drive sounds rough! It's too bad self-driving cars aren't a thing yet. Then you could play games, but it might be hard to set up a board in a car. Ah well.
My favorite of those games is Biblios! Well, I haven't played most of the other games, but Bibios is still pretty high on my list of filler games :D

I'm in California near San Francisco. Not sure if anyone outside of California knows where San Jose is. Maybe techies or fans of the HBO show, Silicon Valley. Oh, Tesla is nearby too, but right now, the cars seem to have just enough self-driving capability to be dangerous. But I think the technology will get there eventually :)
Well I hope you will get to play it with her sometime... it is so great (and I'm not a cat person....!) We love the show Silicon Valley so now I understand completely. We enjoy visiting California usually once a year - in fact we were meant to get married there this year. Lovely part of the world.

My family isn't really into most board games (I've tried Ticket to Ride and Sushi Go which fell flat) but they love trick taking games which I think is culturally familiar to them. I'm planning on just taking The Crew as other games we play only require 1-2 decks of standard playing cards.

Distances in Australia are so huge. In Europe you can cross three or more countries in 20 hours :-) My family doesn´t play games, so when I travel with my wife to meet them we take small games that work well for two: Targi, Hanamikoji, Oh my goods!, Jaipur, San Juan, the fox in the forest,etc... by the way, I played Friday many times and I still haven´t beaten it! so hard!
Haha that is so true! We get very used to driving long distances although a 20hr trip is not something we do often but we have a dog who we couldn't bear to leave at home this year. Great video and list! The two of you make a cute couple and have great chemistry. I have been trying to get my hands on Calico and think that game will work well for my family. For whatever reason, Stockpile is always a big hit with my family (could be because most of us are boring finance types), but we do love it.

One time we did the same drive and we listened to Mariah's entire discography in chronological order. I think it went for around 16 hours. Have I mentioned that Maggie is a very patient woman? 🙃

A different selection of games there. I'm only familiar with half of them. Nidavellir was one I was interested in trying. Looking at the games on your shelf, I thought Taverns of Tiefenthal would have been a good choice too, quick and not too complex.
Very different to our usual taste! We are most likely to be playing heavy euros at a four player count... but family means a bit of a change of pace, and we still enjoy fun lighter games. We do own Taverns, nice and light. Maybe still a bit complex for my mum...! Will you be playing games over Xmas?
@@ThinkerThemer Definitely will be playing games over the holiday season. My main gaming partner is my daughter (12) and school holidays is almost upon us. We are half way through our Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion campaign so will finish that off. We have a back catalog of games to play. The rest of my family are non gamers, so it's really only party games or games which cater for a larger group like No Thanks, The Mind etc. We do like Tournament at Camelot though. That's a good trick taking game with a twist.
I also could Never understand the appeal of Biblios... If it was the only option, yeah, why not? But I'm so glad that's not the case 😅 Maybe it's a themer thing... (which I just discovered I am too, thanks to you guys!)

I love your channel! I've been looking for an all women review channel and you are both so lovely to watch. When I get to the end of these game list videos I forget most of the games mentioned though. Would you be able to add a list of the games somewhere? I get that the game review trend is that youtubers don't want people to skip the video completely and just read the list, but you are both so awesome and joyful to watch, I think people will get a lot out of hearing your thoughts and watch even if they can see the list.

I'm not usually one to buy those things but I'd be so so tempted. Is one of you a bullet journaler as I saw the logo was on grid paper?... I love grid paper and bullet journals. Any back to my memory issue... Lol. I've just realised that you have the games up in the bottom right corner which means I can much more easily fast forward through to remind myself what they all were.

Whoops! It's a big rabbit hole. I suggest not looking at all the creative takes on bullet journalling and just do the minimal set up as per the inventor and follow his video and use if for a productivity tool. But then I'm more a thinker than a themer so Maggie might love to decorate her bujo and make it a hobby like a lot of people do (rather than a simple productivity tool).
😂😂 yes if she gets hooked by anything she goes all in and would never stop at minimal set up. Like the time we tried surfing and I came home to a surfboard in the house and she had many different wetsuits. And then x100 other hobbies in the past 9 years lol. Keeps things interesting I guess hehe
Biblios and Dr Finn is Amazing. Maggie probable does not like it because there is little to NO theme. She may like Herbaceous more, same designer and Beth Sobel art from Pencil First Games. Not 2 part game but a bit of that same first part of the game choice.
Yes she was very disappointed with the theme implementation after reading what it should've been about... having said that she does like 6nimmt and tolerates for sale much more 🤔 Herbaceous is a great recommendation, we've never played it but I've always admired the art (and actually never connected the dots that it was illustrated by Beth Sobel!!!)
