Bose builds 1 ohm drivers for their car subwoofer in order to be able to feed it a large amount of power without an expensive DC-DC boost converter in their power amps. Normally, the only voltage available is 12VDC. You'll notice that the power amp is very compact, and into a typical 8-ohm driver it would deliver only 1/8 the power.
Definitely. It doesn't have much room for excursion before it hits it mechanical limits. And a T-line isn't for output, but more for sound quality. You get the flat frequency response of a sealed box while having the output of a ported enclosure. I do have 4 Rockford Fosgate subs in a ported enclosure which is obviously much louder, but I said I was going to make the T-line for shits and giggles. But now I'm feeling otherwise because it's just not going to be worth the time.
I'm trying to hack two Bose 9" subs into my 2004 Mazda 6. the subs came from a RX8 and each one had that same mini amp you pulled. I sliced the pins to read the circuit board of the amp and can only guess VCC means 12V Constant and SWB means Key On Acc. Also using a plastic deck from a Jaguar trunk to mount to my trunk ceiling.
Pretty decent. I borrowed my sister's '12 mazda 3 skyactiv hatch with the bose prem sound, and was pretty impressed with it. As far as factory stuff goes, not much better can be had in cars under 30k or so. Good highs, nice positioning, decent bass between the little sub and the door woofers. Pretty cool to see it. I had meant to take a look at it before I had to give it back sadly. I loved that car.
Yeah it was in the trunk of my 2004 Mazda 6. It actually fills up the car nicely with just enough bass to match the stock speakers. I will be upgrading the whole sound system though.
Obviously, the enclosure does matter. That's why I always put a lot of time into designing and building my enclosures. I simply said that just because an enclosure looked platicky and jagged doesn't mean it will sound hollow. The enclosure was designed by Bose. They aren't going to design a crappy box and ruin their reputation. I'm not saying they make the best stuff but they do know what they are doing. The material is quite thin though, but there is no "hollow" sound or rattling.
Its making that noise because its playing in free air if he put it in the enclosure it should sound better. And it probably would sound good in a t-line these sub's are made by factories who test these to try get best bass response out of the equipment and budget they have and bose is very expensive so you should get good quality sound from you car. Many cars nowadays contain sub's like these made from Bose so they must be good . nice vid bro 🆒🆗🆕✅✔™®
Thanks. And you're right on about that fappy noise it's making. Once it's in an enclosure, there is a lot more resistance for the sub to move, and it doesn't make that sound.
What's the rms power on that little amp that powers this? I've got 1 of these in my 6 and thinking of just wiring it to a bigger sub for abit extra bass
Not possible now I do think he was pushing it past safe excursion, it's not like that woofer could do that all day without damage but the enclosure has nothing to do with it
Well it wasn't bottoming out, it was just the spider reaching its mechanical limit. The voice coil was not hitting though. But yes smaller subs tend to make loud mechanical sounds.
Okay I’ve got a Mazda 3. These subs were an option which my car unfortunately hasn’t got. Basically I want to know if it’s possible to wire this into my current stereo and if its the same process as any other aftermarket subwoofer. I’ll have it installed in the spare wheel like it comes stock as I need the boot space. I have got a stock stereo though. If needed can be upgraded.
Nice video, very informative when it comes to this type of sub. I have the same sub that I pulled out in one of my cars and planning to install it on my other car. Do I still need to get an amp to get the full power on this thing, and if so what specs. do I need to get? Thanks in advance.
bose is better than most of the car audio shit today. sony pioneer fusion earthquake kicker rockford fosgate better than any of those brands! bose were origionally a home audio brand. for real audio enthusiasts. that same driver was used in the bose acoustimass. two of them were used.
smallenginedude71 You obviously haven't come across Dynaudio (magic bus) Morel (Gary Summers 4 time oscar winning sound engineer for Stars Wars Trilogy and LOTR, Terminator 2), Hybrid Audio (sweeping SQ comps), DLS (Sweeping European SQ comps for over a decade), PHD, Gladen, and the like!
There is nothing special about Acoustimass. I've done many installs and some of your precious Bose speakers are labeled Pioneer. Bose is a gimmick for people with low standards. Rockford and Kicker is way better than Bose as far as car audio is concerned.
drjd2real I'm afraid the contrary is true about Bose, for those who understand acoustics. A top sound engineer stated on diymobileaudio that their (Bose) engineering is sound. The complaint that Bose uses cheap components is something the industry as a whole does, not just Bose, and it displays the level of ignorance from those who make such a claim For example, look up PMC & ATC, then realise that they use cheap $15 - 30 drivers from the the likes of Vifa. The same to could be said of Wilson Audio who charge $10,000's for their speakers, yet they use the bottom of the run Peerless and Scanspeak drivers. At least Bose don't charge $4,500 for a pair of Multimedia speakers like the Boenicke W5 does, the $4,500 speakers that uses a $12.80 full range driver that you and I can buy from parts express! www.parts-express.com/fountek-fe85-3-full-range-speaker-driver--296-717 boenicke-audio.ch/w5_c/ But again, your of criticism of Bose and their engineer, is a display of your lack of understanding of acoustics!
Hey man very nice video. Need your advice, I have bose acoustimass 5 series 3 and I want to make custom built subwoofer box and there are two 5.3 inch woofers in bose sub. Will t line enclosure is best for 2 subs like this??
Well I have 2 floorstanding speakers playing the mids and highs and they do play some of the bass and mid-bass. That's probably where you're hearing the bass from.
With what aftermarket amp could i run this subwoofer since its 1 ohm? I have the non bose model but i'm planing to buy this spare tire subwoofer and power it with some aftermarket amp? Is it possible?
i had the exact same subwoofer before, took it out an made a nice small ported box for it, man that thing would sit still even in the box the box its self moved so i had to weigh it down haha, i put it to its test an for my shits an giggles well i hooked it up to a 300RMS watt amp an it handled like a champ was only @4ohms though, then end up selling it with a home stereo system haha..
I never actually designed or built a T-line enclosure. But I did make a ported enclosure for it. It definitely gives my car's speakers more low end but it took up space in the trunk versus the stock enclosure that sat under the trunk. I'm just using the stock enclosure now.
+AnythingLoud Would you mind sharing your design for the enclosure? or at least some specs like volume? I've got exactly the same setup that I want to build an enclosure for.
I'm not sure I understand your question. It probably won't fit to any other car unless you modify it. You'll have to take out the equalizer in the enclosure. But I don't understand what you mean by "if u run the amp wires as normal?" Do you have an aftermarket amplifier? Or are you trying to run it with the stock headunit?
That has nothing to do with how an enclosure will sound. It doesn't sound hollow at all. In fact, it sounds rather tight. Almost as if it was in a sealed enclosure.
they might but the box is too small to have a good sound to some users. And however much tuning you try to do, such a small box will always sound terrible to people like me.
I'm with you, not worth the time investment to make the T-Line for such a woof... Also, to have real SQ on a T-Line you need certain parameters to be on the "safe side" for the enclosure to properly work as intended... Just my 2 cents, thanks for the videos..
i got it off some one from Usedeverywhere who had a mazda an changed the whole system an wanted to give the bose system in it so i got the whole set up for FREE could you believe it haha all the speakers the sub the amp for the sub an the head unit..
Hey, I saw on youtube a subwoofer box that you designed for one person, can you pass me the proportions, and the exact size, so I create a box TL equal. The video link for you to see. T-Line box for a 10" Subwoofer
Hello dear, i´m from Brazil and i have a pair these subwoofers. Is it possible to connect this sub to a 2 ohm amp? I'm a beginner in audio electronics, and i dont know how connect them. Thanks
Yes, it is possible. This Bose woofer is a 1 ohm driver, meaning that if you have two of them, you can wire them in series, giving the amp a 2 ohm load.
AnythingLoud And how you do to get these speakers specs? Because i own other bose speakers and i don´t have any information about them. This subwoofer have real 100w RMS?
enclosure is key, because if it's not a good enough material you then get an unwanted reverberation from the enclosure rattling, due to the pressure caused by the sub-woofer. Overall, the enclosure build does matter. Just saying, your sub-woofer box looked flimsy.
Nice excursion on that thing. Doesn't sound very happy though. And forget about the comment I posted 2 years ago saying how Bose is shitty, there not that bad. 😀
Your right...I thought bose was shit but ever since I got a 5.25 inch bose ND richbass by them in a wood enclosure I changed my mind. It rattles windows and pics on walls
Only 5 inch.. well the stock 6 has good bass already i guess this adds clearer lows but really why not a 10 or 12? this is just sad i was really pumped for bose but i guess ill see what jbl gives... :(
It looks like it bottoms real quick, looks well built though... then again, how much real output can you get out of a factory 5.25"? yes, a T-Line might do nice but IMO there is no substitute for CONE area... Good video Bro, thanks.

***** No do your research on audio. Subs can have 2 ways of causing noise One by bottoming out and 2 by free air movement. This was not bottoming out because the woofer has a bumped back plate you just can't see it
+EpicEverythingDude75 The term "bottoming out" doesn't always refer to a hard coil bottom. Bottoming out just refers to the point at which the driver is reaching its mechanical limit. It can be a hard coil bottom, a spider/surround limit, the spider/glue joint hitting the top plate, etc. And in the case of this video, it is bottoming out. Not a hard coil bottom but the speaker is reaching its mechanical limit and causing distortion.
AnythingLoud Thanks for the info. I knew what it meant just never knew it meant other things too :-) these little woofers get low for their size and can move a lot of air. I seen a guy build a T-line box for one of these Bose woofers and it sounded fantastic
+jack kaltenbach Yes, it was bottoming out because it was over driven. And outside of the environment it was designed to work. The coil was hitting the center pole piece, most likely, and less likely the bottom of the back plate. And you can take that to the bank; being a certified audio tester and having tested this and all of Bose transducers, I can tell very easily.
You see this is what Bose is known for. Their systems don't boast you in the face with bass, the bass is loud yes, but it's not shake your car loud. I had a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 HD XLT with the Bose audio system and it sounded awesome. The highs were clean, the bass had no distortion. BOSE FOR THE WIN :-D
satan isgoingtofindyou It IS a good thing though. Bose normally makes these 5.25 inch high excursion woofers for cars so the basket doesn't matter. It's designed as a premium sound option for cars so the baskets don't need to be fancy because no one will be pulling the speakers out of the car just to look at the baskets. In other other words, the baskets will not be seen ever. Fun fact: This same woofer is also used on some of Bose's home audio subwoofers that come with Bose home theater products. This small thing puts out some stunning low end for it's size. Very impressive.
Hello can someone Explaing All wirung on this Subwoofer? I wanna insert it in audi but I dont know Wiring where is + or - where is line wires? :) can someone Hellp me with this? :)

It's a 5-1/4". It measures 6" from rim to rim.
nice woofer !
It definitely shakes the mirrors a little bit, but it definitely doesn't rip paper nor shake the trunk up and down...
I have to say. that thing looks BEASTLY! :)
so, for driving this I need an amp with 1 ohm output supported? or else it will burn out, am i right?

I have a Mazda 6 2008 and Bose sound system. It sound very great. Some music with a special kind of bass like ZHU Faded is not so good.
i LOVE Faded!!!
Not the best 5.25'' subwoofer for sure but it's pretty decent, might surprise you in a t-line enclosure. Great to see a vid from you again :P
I bought it at a car dealership. I purchased a 2004 Mazda 6 and it had this subwoofer installed in the trunk.

T-Line box for a 10" Subwoofer
I just bought a 2016.5 CX5 Touring with the Bose/moonroof package and the sound is not impressive. Dynaudio speakers is 10x better.

Bose dose make very good speakers. Every brand make a cheap version and top of the line versions. So you always get what you pay for
Maybe good to put this sub in my Civic backseat panel instead of 2-ways?
No, this woofer has a very thick cone and is designed only for mid-to-low bass. Not intended for use as a mid-woofer.
Needing a box you're saying right?

It was bottoming out
+jack kaltenbach No it wasn't. It was mechanical noise from the sub being used free air. Most subs have noise from being driven in a free air setting.

satan isgoingtofindyou It IS a good thing though. Very impressive.

omg rainbow :) awesome any way adhd lol
if you built a proper box is would sound a lot better on low frequencies and wouldn't bottom out so quick
Well then the car audio itself should be pretty nice.
Not really. You have to consider that it's only a 5-1/4" woofer.
