Nice video, I can't believe this is the same machine that I have. Mine is appearing to be a piece of junk. We are holster makers with 50 years experience but this machine is not working for us. Extremely temperamental on the feed. They say we will get used to it but all I am getting used to is taking the belts off and adjusting again after every few pieces we manage to thin. Does not stay precise. I feed a piece of 6/7 through trying for a solid 6. Sometimes I get a nice 6 and the next one might be a three - that is a ruined piece of leather to me. Why does your machine seem to work so slick and mine is working like a cheap piece of Chinese junk??

Thanks for this. It's great to hear reviews from leather workers on these machines before I decide to buy one. I do have a question. What's the widest piece you have been able to split? I am looking for a splitter that can do at least 9 inches wide but hopefully up to 12 inches wide.

9 inch is a piece of cake. 12 inch is not a problem when the blades are new and very sharp. That being said, the blades do last a very long time before they have to be re-honed. Mine is 5 years old and I have yet to do mine.

I can't believe that you have never had to sharpen or strop the blade. I wanted to get that splitter years ago, but my sharpening skills were not up to the task.

Great video man. Appreciate the info. How do you feel it would handle softer temper, like Chrome-tanned or oil-tanned leathers?

    • @richardepting3155

TechLeatherCraft It does well on firmer oil tans and chrome tans. The only time I’ve ever had issues is if you are trying to split belly areas that are really soft and spongy.

what machine would you say was most valuable to a new leatherworker. A sewing machine a clicker/press or a splitter

    • @popscratchie3985

what i meen is which is the best time/money saver. I have heard it said that a clicker will save more time than a good sewing machine will

    • @TechLeatherCraft

@@popscratchie3985 if you are producing a single item with the same shape a clicker is handy. I have a clicker and sewing machine. The sewing machine gets used daily.. Clicker couple times a week. I'll say a sewing machine has saved me the most time.. I still saddle-stitch some items. But, hand stitching always takes me the longest time.

As TechLeatherCraft said, I would recommend a sewing machine first and a splitter second, and then a clicker. A sewing machine is going to save you the most time.

I'd say a bell knife skiver is the single most important piece of machinery a leatherworker could possess. It opens up so many opportunities, and with some care and attention, panel splitting is possible.

Thank you all for your advice. I have now purchased a sewing machine, although it does make stitching much faster I still find myself hand sewing many of my projects mainly for the prestige of producing hand sewn goods. My next purchase will be a bell skiver
