    ive been using this now for a week or so and I have to say that the performance that I'm getting from the drives inside are doing very well. I think in general they may run cooler which helps them keep their performance longer. Either way I've been using the M.2 drive mostly and its been great. plus the additional SD card reader is a huge benefit. I like.

    I did see another review of this hub and the chap in question used an external power source for it saying it was more stable and ran better with a dedicated power source.

    10:12 - I think you should be attaching those pads to the case, not your drive, so you can swap out the drive without losing those pads. And I'm guessing you have two because you can do one above and one underneath the drive.

    The M1 mini and Base M2 mini only have 2 USB-C ports. Both used by this hub (UH25 Max which came out in mid-late 2022). I'm using the DP port on the hub to run my 4k 60Hz monitor - no problems (the monitor has a KMV switch so I can share keyboard and mouse with my PC). I run a SanDisk Extreme 2Tb from the hub-front USB-c port - it seems very fast when used as a workspace drive. You should test your external drive on the hub-port to see if it is faster than the studio port. I have a Crucial 1Tb SSD in the hub for TimeMachine backups. I'm not using the NVMe slot yet. Very happy with this hub so far.

    Thanks for the video. Very informative. I’ve been curious lately about the NVME drives as I have one on my pc notebook plus a 1 tab hd. Unfortunately, I only have the 256 NVME which is where the system & app files reside. I’ve tried to install some apps on the 1 TB HD but was unable to so backing up my 1 TB iPad wouldn’t work. 😕. I really want a mini…

    Weird the write speed faster than read. Is it the bus speed limiting? Do you have different capabilities on the usb C ports used?
    Makes for a nice neat solution to storage issues. Will it work with PC?

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  Рік тому +1

      i cant see why it wouldnt work on a PC. you just need a usbc port and I believe one port goes to the machine and the other can go to power. or you can run both into the machine so it draws power from the computer. And yes it is strange that it writes quicker. Weird.

    A basic Mac Mini only has 2 usb-c ports along with 2 usb-a ports. You only need to connect 1 usb-c from this widget to the mac, you can connect the other one to a power supply instead of using a port on your Mac.

      Indeed. I confirmed with Qwiizlab and am using a common 5V / 3A 20w or 30w USB charger as the power supply. Works well. Apple sells one, and Amazon sells many.

    Bought a Qwiizlab hub after seeing these review videos, but I'm having issues with it unmounting the installed drives.
    I'm worried about disk (and file) corruption if this keeps happening, and Qwiiz haven't been very helpful tbh. They did advise me to buy a power adaptor for the hub which I got, but still it's happening. Qwiiz ended up refunding me for the hub and not requesting it back, which would be a result if I wasn't living in fear of disk corruption due to the almost daily issue.
    The comments I read on another video made me think about putting it on top of the Mac Mini rather than underneath it, in case it's an overheating issue, but any other ideas from anyone in a similar position?

  • @KevinMillard68

    plug the extream into a thunderbolt port , your hub by the way needs proper external power however the speeds you are seeing from the drives in the hub is what you get they are still treated as externeal drives by the computer because and internal drive means inthe computer and attached to the mother board for proper speeds , you can also achive really good speed if you get a gen4 thunderbolt case and gen4 drive as well just make sure its a powered case for the drive and that it can support the speeds in which your after how ever you will still not see top speeds of the drives in any external case period..

    use a thunder bolt case with your nvme on a mac and youll see amazing reults type c 3.2 is limined to 10mb/s where as a thunderbolt drive is 40 mb/s how ever the fastest you going to get on thunderbolt 3 drive is about 2700+ read and write and thunder bolt 4 should hit about 5000 mb/s all type c 3.2 drives are liminted to a max of about 900 but not all drives will even get that fast ..i just built 2 thunderbotl 4 enclosers with each a kingston kc3000 drive in each rated at 7000 mb/s and they both max out in the 2700+ range on my Mac mini m1 that has thunderbolt 3 thunderbolt 4 like i said will hit around 5000 in therory, nothing is faster tho then internal on the mother board

    This one can’t drive am external USB HDD, not even with a 20W USBC power charger. Is that normal? I can only plug in the USB A ports powered HDD’s.

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  9 місяців тому +2

      yes that is normal. You need way more power than 20w. A standard USBC port can push out anywhere from 40w-240w. I have mine plugged into a 65w power brick and it works fine.

    Seamus' comment basically explains the speed thing. The dock is USB 3.2 (10 Gbps) for some ports and only 3.0 (5 Gbps) for others. Total bandwidth is 10 Gbps. That translates into a max of 1250 MB/s for the 3.2 and 625 MB/s for 3.0. Yes, for a lot of people this is plenty. NVMe drives may not be able to hit the theoretical max of 1250 MB/s even though they are rated higher. I don't completely understand, but a faster NVMe might get to 1250 MB/s, or not. There's something about the non-Thunderbolt connection that limits it. Along with the entire USB-C connection is a total of 10 Gbps (1250 MB/s) so there's that too.
    The reality is this is probably fine for most people who aren't doing some kind of massive, complicated editing of videos, photos, intense 3D modeling, music with hundreds of tracks, etc. Those people need to invest in something like what Seamus uses which is a TB connection and you'll be able to get much closer to internal SSD speeds. Or just buy the largest internal drive they can afford.

    • @victorespina
      @victorespina 10 місяців тому +3

      Because Apple internal ssd are WAY EXPENSIVE, so most of the time you buy a MacMini with the SSD size that you CAN PAY instead of what you really need... and they are not upgradable, so the only way to add more storage space is using external drives. Now, of course you can by an external USBC drive (like the Samsung T7 Shield) or using a NVMe SSD with a TB enclosure (that will give you the NVMe full speed), but this hub solves the extra storage problem in a more neater way AND it gives you additional, easily accesible, USB ports and card readers, all in a nice looking unit that blends perfectly with your Mac. Honestly, unless you need extra fast storage, this is a no-brainer for any MacMini user.
