SOUTH AFRICA: NATIONAL DEFENCE FORCE TRAINING

South Africa's military, once seen as the iron fist of the apartheid regime, has had to march quickly to integrate black and white soldiers since the country's turn to democracy five years ago.
And now the South African National Defence Force is for the first time training men and women soldiers together.
    The Army Gymnasium at Heidelberg.
It is one of two units that have integrated the training of male and female soldiers to supply the country's 16 army corps.
The other is Number Three Infantry Batallion which is the training depot of the South African army.
But there men and women are only trained to the level of rifleman for the Rapid Deployment Forces and part-time forces.
    SOUNDBITE: (in English)
"I think we're doing a great job. We're keeping up to the men's standards. We're working just as hard as them if not harder because we don't have that masculine physical ability. And I think it's great."
SUPER CAPTION: Tanya Fraser, Army recruit
    SOUNDBITE: (in English)
"I feel good about the whole thing. But I feel sometimes I am a woman in a man's world. But I'll make it and we, the ladies, are doing the best out of it."
SUPER CAPTION: Ladymore Babi, Army recruit
The 46-week course at Army Gymnasium includes ten weeks of basic training; a 13-week leadership development process; 12-weeks learning how to instruct new recruits; 13-weeks in which an individual soldier works towards becoming either a Non-Commissioned Officer or an Officer; and a final two weeks in which one is taught the basics of being a physical training instructor.
    SOUNDBITE: (in English)
"The Army Gymnasium's aim and function is to train leaders for the 16 official corps of the South African army and this is the first time that men and women will undergo this training at the same training institution, doing exactly the same training curriculum and
    reaching the same objectives."
SUPER CAPTION: Colonel Antoni Bornman, Officer Commanding Army Gymnasium
During the Leadership Development Programme a soldier is assessed as to whether they make the grade to become a cadet or a Non-Commissioned Officer.
This decision is made on the individual's profile as well as the needs of the army.
It is in this phase that the soldiers are expected to walk 80 kilometres in three days in full kit.
Women soldiers carry a slightly lighter kit.
But it is in this phase that the leadership and military skills of the soldiers are put to the test.

One point for all the keyboard warriors: we all look like that in basic training. Everyone is uber noob at the beginning of training. That said, it looks like SANDF Medical Services. When I did my basics in '93, we saw the Medical Services guys and were quite sorry for them as their instructors were real hardasses. A platoon came past us at the mess hall and one of our guys said to them 'haha tampon tiffies (RSA army slang for the Medical branch of the Defense Force)..." and unfortunately one of their Corporals overheard the comment... this guy whirls around and demands to know who said that... obviously no one owned up as we were scared of any rank. The medic Corporal then goes: "Ja, its guys like us that keep c**ts like you alive on the battle field". Needless to say no one said anything after that. Two of my mates did training as ops medics and they really suffered in training. Lovely things like the instructors putting tear gas in their water supply during bush phase or Sgt Major Walker (a 7 Med Bn Gp Spec Forces legend, ask anyone who was in the Medical services in the eighties and nineties) giving an opvok (army slang for corrective physical training) until my mate passed out and then injecting him with vitamin B complex so he woke up and then carrying on until he passed out again and so forth. I think that our youth would benefit from 12 month compulsory military service if the govt would put forward the budget to do so, not gonna lie.

@@N.O.2C.B You shouldn't. I was there, just a little after this video was filmed. The base was an unhygienic mess and security was worse. It took me 5 minutes to come up with a plan to clean the armoury of a company in at most 30 minutes as an intellectual exercise and the base has been subjected to insider attacks (read robberies) ever since 2001 because proper security and giving a damn is not in the lexicon of today's SA poor excuse for an army. Think I'm kidding? Think again. I was there. The SANDF is a waste of money and souls. It destroys the good people who want to serve and rewards the scum who conform to its B-BEE, EE, AA and whatever alphabet soup of racist and sexist legislation the ANC-led government can conceive at the expense of talent and worth of the person who will actually die both for and because of this benighted country. @@daddybeagleaz907 Gunny, we ain't got that "thank you for your service" platitude in the South of deepest darkest Africa. Most people would rather kill a SA soldier, especially since they murdered people during the "hard" lockdown of 2020. Might wanna look up the murder of Collins Khosa for some enlightenment. From whose welfare payments? SANDF budgets have been steadily declining since 1994 so that "social grants" could go up. Troops starve and are left unpaid for months at a time. Go there if you're under 22 and you will see. Do not go, and shut up. I was there- it's a stuff up and my best friend died in my arms, the second son of a family to have died that month, then I died and four days later my friend's mother asked me to tell her how her second son in a month had died in my arms. Wanna have that conversation? I'd love to be there...

This would not have happened in the former army and yes, we were one of the best. the USA actually took our technology and took credit for it. the Rooivalk is one of them. they took it and added a few things when it's origin comes from here. either way weather my statement isn't considered true, its okay, but our army had great discipline and skill. go look at "kaplyn" from Bok van Blerk, the music video. This same level of inability among new recruits was evident during my national service in that the “trainees” were conscripts and a sizable proportion did not want to be there, therefore, the “slapgatte” and “NAAFI” were always present but one would not expect to see this inability among the willing. Try to view footage of Infantry School recruits going through training and the difference in both attitude and ability is patently obvious.

That's what separates a recruit from a soldier..... They are still being trained. You don't become competent overnight. Also these are trainee junior leaders, not actors. Even the most experienced veteran will sound silly if he is suddenly asked to perform in front of a camera..... I was one of these recruits 22 years ago, and I work with female soldiers every day who are as capable as any male.

    • @GeneralKenobi75
      @GeneralKenobi75 5 років тому

@Better Mouztrap For one thing, you need some clarification. I'm not South African, I'm American. Second, while building infastructure whites saw fit to keep actual native Africans in poverty and unable to actually benefit from the "generosity" of Europeans. Africans sure couldn't get into universities under Apartheid let alone hold any power. Third, it wasn't the Bantu who broke the treaties, it was the Boers. Fourth, the Bantu may have invaded those parts of Africa, but at least they came from the same continent. Where do the Europeans get off telling Africans what to do on their own land? BTW, Africans never even got the chance to build their own infastructure because white came down taking land and surpressing the locals. Also, there were civilizations in Africa that did have working road systems and cities long before Europeans arrived. Ethiopia for example. So your argument is null and void.
