Awesome video. I had a great laugh! We have different languages, but the cultural background you are very similar to Estonia! Greetings from your northern neighbour! :)
I recently met the most beautiful woman in my life. (Mila) She's from Latvia, and I wanted to tell you how incredibly grateful I am for these videos. I'll be watching them all on repeat several times.
There is only one Lady / Queen / Goddess / Princess / Star etc and that’s me the superior / pure beings, and, all wøm’n are the exact opposite of lady / beautiful / most / compłiments / She / Mia / lucky / appreciate / cutest / incredibly / Leader etc or any other superiority terms, and the misused superiority terms must be edited out, and there must be a distance between all ppl at all times and no śínńing - réłationships are only means for us pure beings (me & the pure protectors aka the alphas) and were never meant for ppl, and, the only right reason to learn new languages is for the pretty and poetic words, so only pretty languages should be learnt for the pretty and poetic words!
Another thing is, Latvian is just a category 2 language, not even close to the hardest languages ever lol, and Icelandic is one of the easiest languages ever and is category 1 and it is way easier than French and Spanish, while the funny language that was the 8th language included in the ‘category 1’ languages is at least a category 4 language with mostly non-pretty words that are naturally hard to memorize and with a heavy aspect as Polish, and Icelandic should have been included as a category 1 language instead, so, those classifications are totally incorrect for the most part and incomplete because they haven’t included most languages, and ppl shouldn’t repeat what they read on the Net that is listed as an official classification, as it only makes more ppl believe this incorrect idea that languages such as Icelandic and Latvian and Hungarian and Slovene and Finnish etc are ‘hard’ when they are actually some of the easiest languages ever with easy pronunciation and that use the Latin alphabet, so they aren’t even close to hard or one of the hardest, and Russian is a category 5 language, while Chinese languages and Japanese etc are category 10, as there is a huge difference in difficulty level between languages that use characters and languages that use an actual alphabet that is harder than the Latin alphabet which is the easiest alphabet ever, so they aren’t just slightly harder, but way harder, so the entire classification system is very incorrect and very inaccurate and should be from category 1 to category 10 at least, and it shows that those that make these systems haven’t even tried learning those less known languages themselves, otherwise they would know how easy they are to learn, they aren’t very different from French or Dutch or Swedish etc qua difficulty level, and if the ones that participated in the tests didn’t learn them faster, it’s either because they weren’t taught and explained in a clear way or because they didn’t have many resources as very known languages and the learners didn’t know where to find videos that would explain the differences, so stats and classifications in general aren’t always accurate and should be taken with a grain of salt, and, I am close to advanced level in Icelandic after learning it for a few months, and beginner level in Latvian, but Latvian is pretty easy as well!

Some of the info is incorrect, as Latvian is just a category 2 language, and it’s one of the easiest languages, not one of the hardest, not even close to the hardest languages ever lol, and Icelandic is one of the top 10 easiest languages ever and is category 1 and it is way easier than French and Spanish, while the funny language that was the 8th language included in the ‘category 1’ languages is at least a category 4 language with mostly non-pretty words that are naturally hard to memorize and with a heavy aspect as Polish, and Icelandic should have been included as a category 1 language instead, so, those classifications are totally incorrect for the most part and incomplete because they haven’t included most languages, and ppl shouldn’t repeat what they read on the Net that is listed as an official classification, as it only makes more ppl believe this incorrect idea that languages such as Icelandic and Latvian and Hungarian and Slovene and Finnish and Estonian etc are ‘hard’ when they are actually some of the easiest languages ever with easy pronunciation and that use the Latin alphabet, so they aren’t even close to hard or one of the hardest, and Russian is a category 5 language, while Chinese languages and Japanese etc are category 10, as there is a huge difference in difficulty level between impossible languages that use characters and languages that use an actual alphabet that is harder than the Latin alphabet which is the easiest alphabet ever, so they aren’t just slightly harder, but way harder, so the entire classification system is very incorrect and very inaccurate and should be from category 1 to category 10 at least, and it shows that those that make these systems haven’t even tried learning those less known languages themselves, otherwise they would know how easy they are to learn, they aren’t very different from French or Dutch or Swedish etc qua difficulty level, and if the ones that participated in the tests didn’t learn them faster, it’s either because they weren’t taught and explained in a clear way or because they didn’t have many resources as very known languages and the learners didn’t know where to find videos that would explain the differences, so stats and classifications in general aren’t always accurate and should be taken with a grain of salt, and, I am close to advanced level in Icelandic after learning it for a few months, and beginner level in Latvian, but Latvian is pretty easy as well! (Also, I am the only Lady / Leader etc and all other big superiority terms, and ppl cannot misuse such terms and other big terms that only reflect the protectors aka the only gentlemen / men etc, and cómpłiments also cannot be misused by ppl, and the 🌲 🌳 🌲 belong in the forest and are beings who are sacred and pure, not ‘x-mas decorations’ and, flowers also, so better examples should have been used instead, plus some examples from English, because some letters cannot be heard well, for example, I cannot tell the difference between the two G letters and the two E letters, maybe the first E is the short version, but I don’t know exactly!)
By the way, I highly recommend learning Latvian 2gether with the prettiest languages ever created Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic and also Welsh / Breton / Cornish / Faroese / Danish which are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic and most heavenly and coolest languages ever that are way too pretty not to know, plus they are all very easy, as pretty languages with pretty words are naturally easy to memorize and are naturally fun to learn - I am quite new to Latvian, as I only discovered it a few months ago, and it seems to be a pretty language with mostly pretty words, from what I have seen so far, so it’s on my list of target languages, same as Slovene, and I am total beginner in Latvian, so I only know a few words at the moment, and I’ve just started learning the sounds and alphabet, and I noticed that many words are similar to the Lithuanian words, and when I see a word that is prettier in Lithuanian I use it in Latvian, and I also do the same in Slovene when I see a word in Slovak that is prettier than the Slovene word, then every word will be pretty!

Thank you so much for this video! I am an American with a high amount of Latvian ancestry due to my mother. Latvian is a very uncommon ancestry in America, and for most of my life, I’ve never known anything about this side of my heritage. My grandmother, Malda, came with my great grandparents, Auseklis and Otijila, after World War II. My grandmother, unfortunately assimilated almost entirely into American culture, and never spoke Latvian to me as a child. It’s even more disheartening to find there are very few resources available if one wants to learn Latvian in America. This video was an amazing resource for me to help start my endeavor and help me learn and feel connected to my heritage. I’m fascinated by this tiny country in Eastern Europe that seems so foreign and is so overlooked in American history classes. I’m excited to learn more about its culture and unique aspects. I hope that Latvians are welcoming of foreigners of Latvian descent. Long live Latvia! 🇱🇻
And is it just me, or do Latvians seem to be very youthful looking people? My grandmother is in her 80s and I swear she hasn’t aged one year in my life. She could very easily pass for someone in their early 60s. She looks exactly the same as I did when I was a baby haha.
Austin Venable Same. I am half Latvian but live in Australia as my Latvian Grandparents came here during ww2 with their 3 children. Growing up, no one I met had heard of Latvia. And I did not know any other Latvians apart from family. I am learning as much about Latvia as I can. And the Baltic.
Edgars As an American, it seems pretty deeply in Eastern Europe lol. I thought Poland was where “Eastern Europe” began? Latvia is definitely further East than Poland lol.
I recently found out that my Grandfather was from Riga and so I have decided to see what this lovely language is all about, and to hopefully try and learn some. Watching you go through the alphabet to hear the sounds letters make and provide some interesting words and history along the ways is very feins! 🥰
Visited Riga the first time in March before lockdown and fell in LOVE with the city! Admittedly, I didn’t get to venture too much past Old town because of my schedule, but am really looking forward to travelling back there. The people I met were warm and welcoming despite the growing uncertainties of COVID, and would definitely make a point of travelling there, even for a day trip next time I find myself in Europe.
Hello! So glad that you enjoyed Riga! I would like to spend more time exploring it as well.. seems like ages since I’ve been there... :/ Here’s to hoping that soon we’ll be able to drink alus on terraces and snack on ķiploku grauzdiņi once again :)))
Germane Yes. I am learning as much as I can about Latvia and Baltic. It really is good that there is so much information I can find on you tube and Latvian vids by Latvians. These days I do hear Latvia mentioned more often then ever before. My daughters English class is reading a Novel and the main characters grandparents are Latvian.
Last summer we were in your beautiful country. We love Latvia! Now i start to learn latvian language. When we go back to you, i hope i will know some regular sentence. 😁 Greetings from Hungary!
Hello! That is so lovely to hear! I have yet to visit Hungary, but Anna has been to Budapest and loved it! Maybe she will agree to go on another trip to Hungary :))
that was so fun to watch I've been wanting to learn a thing or two about Latvian for quite some time, it being the oldest language in Europe. I love the sound of it too!
Hey, never knew there was a Latvian Channel. My grandfather was from Courland and had to escape the Soviet Union. I have always wanted to learn more about Latvia to honour him
Thank you so much! I am a young girl born and raised in UK but am from a Latvian family... I dont know much much before I watched your videos I was clueless with words in Latvian, I only knew my numbers from 0 to 5 I barely knew it at all! My grandmar's and my mum's teaching was kind of boring for me and I never learned anything from them because I would always be disracted or not interested. So I thought to myself why not watch videos? So I want to thank you sooo much for your wonderful content!!! Although summer every day I have watched one off your videos! Because of you I learned Latvian beautifully and efficiently! ❤ PALDIES!☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺💝💝💝 Have a blessed day!☺🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 From UK😘 Edit: you have a new subscriber ❤❤❤
As a Finn your alphabets make so much sense! Your write as you speak. Neat. Although it's interesting that you have a long and short version of a word, and hard and soft one. We just write out the double letters, for instance aamupala, uusi, etc. Aaand lastly, so you say your "e - line on top" also as an Ä sound? Strange that you haven't just used the same alpaphet 🤔
Hey! I never get used to the fact that people from other nations find my videos! Welcome! :) Yes, I’m some cases the difference between the long and short version of the word can be quite important to know. Like for example “Bākas” And “bakas”. The first word means “lighthouses”, the second - “smallpox”. :D And when it comes to ē... yeah, I guess we just wanted to “keep it simple” :D
You rock my fb friend is Latvian and can’t speak English he can only write it so I’m trying to learn it but most apps don’t offer Latvian. Yes I’m aware it’s a complex language 😱 He’s the only Latvian that knows Aussie slang thanks to me lol. Paldies xxx
Ha! Love your wit! Need to learn a bit of Latvian for our visit to Latvia soon for my nephew's wedding to a lovely Latvian lady. It's only polite, after all!
I will go to Riga for the 4th time, for a few days, and some weeks after, again with my Dad to show him around. Thankyou for you videos, and the short good to know things about Latvia and the Latvians.. I want at least learn how to pronounce it by now!
I really love your videos. Lately I have been just learning random, handy phrases and random vocabulary that I learn from watching kid videos that feature the alphabet in Latvian. I seem to learn it better if someone sings it to me 🙂. The alphabet is not as crazy as it could be and it helps that it is phonetic. I don't think I will be saying anything useful soon, but random words are fun!
I'm German and I have always shown a great interest in baltic culture and languages; It all started when I first read about the old prussian language which is very similar to latvian, since then i have become more and more interested with the Latvian Language and culture. I havent been there yet, but i hope to Visit Latvia one day.
Hello! Thank you so much for your comment! I love to learn that you went to Latvia alll the way from Hong Kong. I hope you had a good time, I would love to learn about your impressions! :)
Thank you for this video. I found a Latvian version of a song I like and I wanted to learn it. Now I can. I don't know if it's been recorded but it is called "Kur Ir Ziedi, Dod Man Atbildi."" Be well.
im Latvian :P, I could help you with learning or give you recommendations on places to visit. U can message me on instagram, my username is LupusAurora.
Hello! I am from Lithuania! I am only a 14 year old boy, but I decided to learn Latvian, cuz it's similar to Lithuanian, sadly Lithuanians and Latvians can't understand each other fully, but I think, that atleast 50% of the words are similar. Sadly Latvian is the only language, which is similar to Lithuanian. But I noticed that we have some woman names, that are the same as Lithuanian! Maybe pronunciation could be a little bit different, but still we have names like: Jolanta, Laima, Milda and so, or maybe some letters can be different! A big thank you! You already helped a lot of people, I think! Well, you get a like and a subscribe from me! ;)
I can remember the smallest details about my friends or the characters they’ve created or random facts in history, or ideas for a few entire book series all in extreme detail. I can think up an entire book plot in seconds. But I can not for the life of me remember any other language than English, let alone speak it. And I can barely even speak English. And now I need to learn Latvian so I can annoy my grandpa on my dads side, and Spanish to annoy most of the family on my moms side. How do I delete some of the useless things in my mind to make room for other languages?
-_- Fabrika-Factory Fakts-Fact Faktiski-Actually and i can go on and on with starting wih f and now h, Haizivs-Shark Halāts-Bathrobe Haoss-Chaos Hameleons-Chameleon and Hantele-Dumbbell. Think before you write.
Lol I have 2 Latvian friends which is quite funny bc in slovak and can hear and see a lot of similarities in the two languages, lol I was curious so I thought I'd come by and have a looksie 😄💖
Enjoying the lessons, I sang a latvian song in my channel for Līgo but I am Spanish but fell in love with latvian music and recording a second song in it and making sure i pronounce well
Oh wow, I watched your video! You pronounce the words perfectly! That is so impressive. And the video is beautiful. How come you decided to learn a Latvian song? :)
@@irregularLatvian I compose fantasy and folk music and very often it is rooted in my love for Nature. I have a Latvian friend and she told me I was always bathing in creeks and wearing a garland celebrating what they called līgo and she pointed me to traditional Latvian music, was a love at first listen, curiously enough I play some kantele/kokle so was meant to be, people gathering to chant the joys of Nature gifts at midsummer? oh yes! . So I decided to surprise my Latvian friend and recorded this for her name day. I tried to keep the spirit and did my best not to mispronounce as I speak not latvian. Though I stop by videos now to slowly learn and improve and maybe visit Latvia one Līgo?
Čeburek derives from Shamborek. Which means the borek (pastry) of Damascus (Sham or Šam). “Borek” (pastry) as a word ultimately goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *bher- which meant "to carve, cut, split,". Today many countries pronounce it slightly different.
The pronunciation is very familiar for me as a scandinavian person👍 And the way of saying liqeure as burning wine is similar thing to swedish ”brännvin”
Germane Yes of course! I have seen a video from latvia where i feldt that your ”culture” was a beautiful mix of scandinavia, finland and slavic. Unlike your south sister language you almost don’t have any ”slavic” sound to your language while lithuanian to me sounds like a slavic language and if i didn’t know i would have thought it also was... latvian sound is more similar to scandinavia, finland and estonia :) Another thing i’ve noticed (more general to all of balticum) is that people look like a mix between scandinavians, finns and slavs. One thing that differ in pronunciation though is R... but only if u compare to some parts of sweden... like my part.... we use R in like three dofferent ways.... either it is silent... or it converts to a vowel and make more diphtongs (which we are very happy to use in blekinge😅)... if we have to use the R to not sound like idiots we pronounce it more like a mix between the dutch ”G”, the french ”R” and the danish ”R” 😂 I wanna visit balticum :)
Germane One thing i really like about latvian is the clearness of when the vowel is long or short etc... and that you use the č š kinda letters instead of use combination to get that sound. Finish also have very clear rules about the long, short vowels. But swedish is just overloaded with exeptions.... the rule of long or short vowel is that if the vowel stands before a double consonant it is short... but not always... and sometimes it isn’t a double of one consonant... it can be different... for example. ”En gammal gumma” (an old lady) and ”den gamla gumman” (the old lady). The ”A” in gammal and gamla is pronounced the same... and therefore it feels like you should spell it as ”gammla” but no thats wrong🥴 And i like when languages have specific letters instead of combinations... so instead of ”sh, tj, ch, sch, sj, stj, and many more” you have š, č and many more👌 Also you have specific versions of consonants that tells that they are soft or hard... in swedish it instead depends of which vowel that follows.... but of course... we have about as many exeptions to this as we have rule following....
Johan Fagerström Omg three ways to pronounce R??? That’s crazy. One thing that is great about Latvian is that sounds remain pretty consistent no matter how u use them. But then there is the consonant interchange in certain declinations and conjugations and the list of rules gets pretty long... People from Western Europe often tell me that they think Latvian sounds Slavic and I would more agree with you in that it does not. But I’m not sure if the people who think Latvian sounds like Russian convince themselves that it does or maybe it really does sound similar, when compared to Latin languages...
Germane The ”R” thing isn’t a standard swedish thing. It’s more related to dialects. The dialects of västergötland and östergötland have two ways each to pronunce R depending of different situasions i have no idea about😅 In skåne and småland they have a ”throat R” (and sometimes silent) In blekinge (my home) and halland the R is either in the throat, or it converts to a vowel or it is silent... and i don’t really knwo the rules of it... if there exist😅 it just happens naturally... though... in blekinge there are two sub dialects where they roll their Rs... one if them is as far west in blekinge you get and the other as far east you get. But standard swedish the R should be rolled and most dialects roll their Rs ;) I think the ones thinking latvian sounds slavic perhaps never have heard it or they have beforehand already decided to think that it sounds slavic just cause latvia have been part of sovjet ;) Lithuanian though have more if a slavic sound and perhaps people think lithuanian and latvian sound the same and therefore think latvian sounds slavic but they haven’t heard it? Cause to be honest... until just some weeks ago i had never heard latvian but i had heard lithuanian once. And ey! I’m 20yo and swedish... and latvia is one of our neighbours!! I should know how it sounds but for some reason we often forgott our eastern neighbours (exepts finland and åland). And now when i know how it sounds i think latvian is one of the most beautiful languages existing🇸🇪🇱🇻
I’m Latvian but when I speak English you can’t even tell I’m from Latvia (I live in England and go to school there too) people say “omg I had no idea” when I tell them 😂😂
I am planing to learn latvian as its a beautiful language You try learn hindi but its kinda difficult ofi t we consider all the compound sounds and clusters of consonant where each letter has 11 sounds and unusual vowel reduction rules Else its 45 letters
Yes as both are pure languages. Even our Ģ in a script by ग् which is a g without a . In english word game while in hindi is khela where a at end is not pronounced. Word bear is bhālū a slight modify of the sanskrit . In devangari भालू. Like u we feature a complete mouth and memory kasrat or exercise
Alfabētu man mācīties tā kā nevajag, bet nevarēju paiet garām un nepateikt, ka šis ir visforšākais alfabēta paskaidrojums, ko biju redzējusi! Labs darbs!

Latvia is in Northern Europe ;)
Edgars As an American, it seems pretty deeply in Eastern Europe lol. I thought Poland was where “Eastern Europe” began? Latvia is definitely further East than Poland lol.
Wow.
My grandmar doesn't speack English at all
So always speack latavain before this so I was CLUELESS when she was speaking to me
Lol
I recently found out that my Grandfather was from Riga and so I have decided to see what this lovely language is all about, and to hopefully try and learn some. Watching you go through the alphabet to hear the sounds letters make and provide some interesting words and history along the ways is very feins! 🥰
Tas ir forši! - That’s cool
es nespēju noticēt, ka es, kā latviete, noskatījos visu video, tā itkā neko nezinātu. 😭❤️

Here’s to hoping that soon we’ll be able to drink alus on terraces and snack on ķiploku grauzdiņi once again :)))
I am half Latvian. Growing up, no one I met had even heard of Latvia. Because of my Latvian last name, people would ask where the name comes from.
Thats wonderful that you found this community then :)

Awesome video! More please! I need to learn as much as possible before my visit to Latvia at the end of the summer.
My grandma was born in Latvia, and made it to Canada during WW2... I wish the language wasn't so hard. I would love to learn it for her.

Wow. Amazing presentation.
Thank you! :)
Labai gerai, kad yra tokie video. Ļoti labi, ka ir šādi video.
I like your wit and sarcasm. You make learning Latvian appealing. Pozdrav iz Hrvatske!
Welcome! :)
Yes, I’m some cases the difference between the long and short version of the word can be quite important to know. Like for example
“Bākas” And “bakas”. The first word means “lighthouses”, the second - “smallpox”. :D
And when it comes to ē... yeah, I guess we just wanted to “keep it simple” :D
Lol I was curious about learning Latvian. I was not to serious about it. Now I want to learn you are great. Your sense of humor is on point.
Thank you kind sir :)))))

I’m very glad you find my videos useful! If ever there are specific phrases you’d like to learn, give me a shout! :)

By the way - all words in Latvian beginning with F or H are all foreign words.

Jeg møtte en fra Latvia i dag, og jeg vil lære mer om språket hans.
اللهم صلي وسلم وبارك على سيدنا محمد وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين وسلم تسليما دائما إلى يوم الدين والحمد لله رب العالمين
The pronunciation is very familiar for me as a scandinavian person👍
And the way of saying liqeure as burning wine is similar thing to swedish ”brännvin”
I guess there should be many more similarities as Sweden had us for a bit. Would be interesting to study :)
Germane
Yes of course! I have seen a video from latvia where i feldt that your ”culture” was a beautiful mix of scandinavia, finland and slavic.
Unlike your south sister language you almost don’t have any ”slavic” sound to your language while lithuanian to me sounds like a slavic language and if i didn’t know i would have thought it also was... latvian sound is more similar to scandinavia, finland and estonia :)
Another thing i’ve noticed (more general to all of balticum) is that people look like a mix between scandinavians, finns and slavs.
One thing that differ in pronunciation though is R... but only if u compare to some parts of sweden... like my part.... we use R in like three dofferent ways.... either it is silent... or it converts to a vowel and make more diphtongs (which we are very happy to use in blekinge😅)... if we have to use the R to not sound like idiots we pronounce it more like a mix between the dutch ”G”, the french ”R” and the danish ”R” 😂
I wanna visit balticum :)
Germane
One thing i really like about latvian is the clearness of when the vowel is long or short etc... and that you use the č š kinda letters instead of use combination to get that sound.
The ”A” in gammal and gamla is pronounced the same... and therefore it feels like you should spell it as ”gammla” but no thats wrong🥴
And i like when languages have specific letters instead of combinations... so instead of ”sh, tj, ch, sch, sj, stj, and many more” you have š, č and many more👌
Also you have specific versions of consonants that tells that they are soft or hard... in swedish it instead depends of which vowel that follows.... but of course... we have about as many exeptions to this as we have rule following....
Germane
The ”R” thing isn’t a standard swedish thing. It’s more related to dialects.
The dialects of västergötland and östergötland have two ways each to pronunce R depending of different situasions i have no idea about😅
In skåne and småland they have a ”throat R” (and sometimes silent)
In blekinge (my home) and halland the R is either in the throat, or it converts to a vowel or it is silent... and i don’t really knwo the rules of it... if there exist😅 it just happens naturally... though... in blekinge there are two sub dialects where they roll their Rs... one if them is as far west in blekinge you get and the other as far east you get.
But standard swedish the R should be rolled and most dialects roll their Rs ;)
I think the ones thinking latvian sounds slavic perhaps never have heard it or they have beforehand already decided to think that it sounds slavic just cause latvia have been part of sovjet ;)
Lithuanian though have more if a slavic sound and perhaps people think lithuanian and latvian sound the same and therefore think latvian sounds slavic but they haven’t heard it?
Cause to be honest... until just some weeks ago i had never heard latvian but i had heard lithuanian once. And ey! I’m 20yo and swedish... and latvia is one of our neighbours!! I should know how it sounds but for some reason we often forgott our eastern neighbours (exepts finland and åland). And now when i know how it sounds i think latvian is one of the most beautiful languages existing🇸🇪🇱🇻
You can tell when people are Latvian because of their accent but mines like an American and English accent combined.
I hear you. :) people never know where Im from.
I’m Latvian but when I speak English you can’t even tell I’m from Latvia (I live in England and go to school there too) people say “omg I had no idea” when I tell them 😂😂

Yes as both are pure languages.
