    for sealant tubes i use a flexible plastic, such as from a ziplock bag between the thread and the nut. there's always plenty to be found in the garbage. for superglue, i tend to light a candle, and melt some hot glue, letting it drip over the open bottle. i then discard the cap, and peel off the hardened hot glue next time i want to use it.

      I’ve been doing the same - also using cut up sandwich bags - for years. I cut some bags up into squares about 2 x 2 inches. I do the same for any liquids when traveling via air. Unscrew the cap, place square of plastic over opening, screw cap back on.

    I never would have thought of the inner tube trick, since I work on engines so infrequently now I have probably wasted over a dozen tubes of different sealants over the last few years.

    Will have to try the rubber gasket method. What I've noticed is that sealant will gum up the threads, harden, and prevent the cap from making an airtight seal. Then I have to puncture or drill out the hardened sealant in the mouth of the tube.

So simple, yet something the manufacturer should do, but won't, due to corporate GREED and would result in less sales because everyone would get to use the entire tube. I lost track over the decades of how many tubes of caulking or RTV I have thrown away that we're barely used.

    Great tip here. I could not live without my metal lathes, I have two of them, use them all of the time on projects that I never would have thought of. Most recent, yesterday making the sparkplug adapter to use for my new Mityvac MV8500 that I just purchased based on your recommendation. I currently have the engine case split on a Husqvarna 125e engine and am looking for the best sealant to use in assembling the two pieces back together? I was thinking of Permatex #3 here in the USA.

    • @VintageEngineRepairs
      @VintageEngineRepairs  3 місяці тому +1

      Me too, I love mine!! The best case sealant imo is linked in the description of this video - threebond 1215 which is the identical product to yamabond 4 just a heck of a lot cheaper lol edit: don’t use #3 on cases it won’t seal properly. You want a case sealant rather than a gasket dressing compound.

      Yep! It’s Yamabond 4 in the video, this is made by the company “Threebond” for Yamaha. Threebond 1215 is the exact same product, but you get a bunch more and pay less. Don’t waste your money with Yamabond 4. The only reason I tried was because I had hoped the applicator nozzle shown in the picture where I ordered it, would work better. Well the picture on the website was not what I received!! Anyway, here you go for reverence, this is the TDS for Yamabond 4 and as you can see it states “tb1215 / Yamabond 4-mc” (tb1215 = threebond 1215) - the product I linked to. www.rockymountainatvmc.com/docs/MSDS_Yamaha_Yamabond%204.pdf

    I am restoring an engine. (It’s just a clone 196cc) and noticed that it has aluminum push rods. I think I would rather have steel pushrods in it though. I have a spare clone 163cc that has steel pushrods. The aluminum rods are 0.0035 shorter than the steel rods. Would it be ok for me to swap them? Is that a big enough difference to warrant not swapping or will this difference not be a problem? Thanks for any help.

    • @VintageEngineRepairs
      @VintageEngineRepairs  7 місяців тому

      If you do swap the push rods, just adjust the valves. There is normally a reason a certain material is (or is not) used. If it was me, I’d stick with what came with the machine. If the new push rods are harder than the valves you may wear the valve stem, you may wear the pushrod drillings / guides etc. one thing I have learnt - the more creative I get, the more problems I cause haha

    The sealant manufacturers should include this in their product.....but they want the sealent to cure so they can sell more. Bottom line profits, same for nearly everything including cars.
