ngl i just shed a tear or ten over this beauty. the delicate song, the melancholy, the parallels, this was such a short yet poignant study of alicent, i'm in awe! (her arc was one of my favourite things about this season - so i'm doubly delighted to see you weave your magic with her story)
Okay wow, the coloring is really well done! Everything is so beautifully poignant. 💕 I love the visuals you've chosen to show the parallels between her younger anxiously unsure self and her older mature and self-determined present-day version. Alicent is such an overlooked character. Too many are too quick to dismiss her as just a terrible mother and while she is an inadequate parent, I wish more people would try to sympathize with her and her circumstances. She doesn't exist in a vacuum. (she didn't just fall out of a coconut tree 🥥🌴lol) And this might be me projecting myself onto her character, but I genuinely believe when Rhaenys asked if she'd ever imagined herself on the iron throne and Alicent didn't answer, I genuinely, *genuinely*, believe that she truly never pictured herself as legitimate ruler. Sure, she was queen regent for many years and ruled in Visery's absence, but he was still alive, there was a physical embodiment of *checked* power in the shape of her husband. Every day when she sat in the council in the king's stead she didn't even think of it as "ruling" but rather "just playing my part" like reading lines off a script she was given some time ago. So when she starts tearing up in that scene I think it's out of self-loathing and self-pity at the realization that she genuinely, *GENUINELY*, never considered the one thing every woman in the world would literally die for. Rhaenys looked shocked with a mix of pity and disgust at Alicent's genuine lack of self-insertion and I think in response to Rhaenys' "awe" Alicent finally realizes that she has just missed the greatest opportunity she ever had to break free. The door was wide open for her this whole time while Visery lived, all she had to do was cross the threshold. But she never even turned to face the door because she was too distracted by the vulgarity of the tapestry and now the door is bolted shut. I think that scene was the defining moment for her character so I kinda unironically love that you didn't include it in your edit. Like an "unsaid truth" kind of thing. Well done. ❤ Also, great choice of music. As soon as I heard it I immediately recognized it as the Medici ost and I think that was a great choice not just musically but also like...text-to-world and text-to-text connection-wise if that makes sense? If you've seen the show on Netflix or know anything about the family from history you can see a lot of similarities between the Medici family and the Hightowers/Tyrells in HoTD/GOT. Their main driving factor isn't just to acquire wealth and fame, they have that already. What these houses want (wanted) is a legacy that goes beyond the (inevitable) decline of their own house. Humans are notoriously bad at foresight so that tendency to look beyond the current matters of conflict and think for the collective future is rare in fiction and in real. The heads of these families have demonstrated this foresight into history. And just on an individual level, there are parallels between Alicent Hightower and Catherine de Medici (Queen of France), both were queen regents to their sons during a time of civil unrest and war. Both had an involvement in the massacre of thousands of their own subjects. Both rallied as religiously self-righteous saints in their campaigns. And both are now portrayed as evil serpent queens by history. Both their houses went into absolute decline after this era. p.s. Renaissance by Paolo Buonvino & Skin (another one of Medici's ost, great song, I used to listen to on repeat when writing papers in school, definitely give it a listen if you haven't already) would make for a great song for Rhaenyra's edit if you're planning on making one for her too. But honestly.....I would save this idea for after season 3 and maybe 4. The song fits HoTD in general (mainly the blacks) but....really....put a pin on it for now....I haven't read the books (won't read em) but I do know some spoilers and from what I can tell....this song is going to be sOOOOOOO on the nose for Rhaenyra in the coming seasons....like line-by-line, and word for word, on the nose.
