I'm only a few minutes into the video, but I wanna say some of these criticisms thus far may simply be a product of the game being scaled down onto the Game Gear. At the very least, I'm pretty sure you can't easily hit Robotnik in the air on the first boss encounter in the Master System version, and some of the later bosses may be similarly more difficult on the console version. it's been a while since I've played the 8-bit games at all, but I distinctly remember preferring the SMS iterations because they offered a more balanced challenge. The quirky mid-air acceleration was also much easier to manage on a larger screen, and never made the games feel as awkward as they do on the cropped Game Gear display. In the sequel, Sonic 2, this made a HUGE difference on Green Hills Act 3, where the handheld version was unfairly difficult as you blindly traversed huge chasms. [EDIT:] OH HAI HE TALKS ABOUT THE SMS VERSION, WHOOPS.
I remember playing this game on my Game Gear until my father stomped on it shattering it's screen when I was a young boy. It was not too bad of a Sonic game. It could of been better.
The master system sonic games are so damn good. I don't know why you'd wanna play the game gear ports instead when you have the choice these days. It's like, would you play Mario 3 allstars version on the SNES, or would you play the GBA port with the screen crunch? It's an easy choice to make there. In the UK we all had master systems, the master system outsold the NES, very few people had NESs here. And so a lot of people think of Sonic firstly as a platformer. Rather than a super speedy momentum physics based game that the mega drive versions were. The platforming aspect of sonic has slowly decline over the years but it was a vital part of it. And the Master System sonic games I'd argue are just as good as the mega drive ones, but for different reasons. They're fantastic little basic platformer games. Mario style games, you could almost say. Anybody who likes retro games and platformers needs to play the master system sonics. They're really good. Some of the best 8 bit platformers ever made, and I don't say that lightly. Just don't play them on the game gear and claim they're bad because of the limitations of the game gear. That's just a bad faith argument all round
@@duffman18 Why would you play the Game Gear versions? Maybe because Sonic 2 on the Master System is fraging UNFINISHED? Invisible water, good ending also using the bad ending theme, while good ending theme is in the rom unused, and the first boss lacking half of its attacks pattern, as it's supposed to launch two types of bouncing bombs, wide bouncing one and high bouncing one, while on the Master System version it only launches wide ones, all proves that version is unfinished. Not to mention Game Gear has the superior boss theme.
"At the very least, I'm pretty sure you can't easily hit Robotnik in the air on the first boss encounter in the Master System version" Yeah...its not just that: its that Eggman isn't even supposed to get hit in the air on the Master System version. You can only hit him after a couple cycles due to "vectoring" him. So, its a glitch in the original. They ported the game and, when doing that, lowered Eggman to be able to be seen but didn't redesign the boss. This has happened before, like with Sonic 2 GG (albeit that was made by Aspect and not Ancient) where they just did a basic port without fixing anything that may arise from doing so.

A reasonable perspective; can't say I really disagree with most complaints, but perhaps those shortcomings didn't bother me quite as much. That being said, I definitely suggest trying the SMS version of the game, especially if you enjoyed this one in any capacity. I'm not sitting here saying 8-bit Sonic is a paragon of the series, but it's surprisingly Not Bad, and at the very least I'd argue that it accomplished the job of making a down-graded port much better than its main competition at the time... Nobody can tell me Mario Land 1 and 2 were anywhere near as competent as Mario 3 and Mario World; certainly good in their own right, but they fell remarkably short from their source material compared to the 8-bit Sonic games. I grew up with console Mario games and then the Genesis with Sonic, and when I finally got a chance to play the SMS/GG titles, they never felt so far removed from what I knew or expected that I was particularly disappointed. Also, Yuzo Koshiro is good, but I personally think later 8-bit sonic games had more engaging soundtracks (Chaos, Triple Trouble, Blast...). That may be the biggest example of personal preference, though ;)
Jungle zone on SMSD you fall you die. the master system is far superior to this one. check out the last boss in that versin an you will see it. trust me dude. play the SMS version and you will love it
Hope you’ve been well, dude! It’s hard to keep going… I’m at 3000 subs, and 10% of you, still trying to make vids, and I totally know how overwhelmingly hopeless and annoying it can get… you made 500 videos! That’s incredible… so much work.
I hope you are having a good life man! You are such a pleasant and comforting video game reviewer. You have a different vibe my friend! One that cannot be matched.
I have to say, the game looks and sounds amazing. I'm definitely biased as the Master System version was one of the absolute first games I've played, but man these backgrounds are gorgeous and very well circumvent the limitations of the machine.
Even though I consider the 8-bit version of sonic as a great game (look at my profile picture lol) and I disagree with some of your arguments, I enjoyed your review, as I do with every single one of your videos, because these are great : ) I love your youtube channel.
So good review, my take is this: Sonic 8 bit is better than the Genesis version. I think it’s more consistent than its counterpart. When playing the Genesis version I enjoy Green hill and Starlight Zone. That’s it. Game Gear version, Green Hill, Bridge Zone, Jungle Zone all stand out levels. Even Labyrinth Zone is better, since the game is made for slower gameplay, making the water physics-bearable. I like most of the classic series but I have never been fond of the genesis version of the original. I have a soft spot for this version though. Lastly, I have alway thought DKL 2 suffers from not enough going on in the background (opposite of the first game) making things occasionally feel samey.
I love your reviews. I wish I was older and more successful so I can drink some wine and sit on my comfy couch and warm room while listening to you review games.
I had this game as a kid (along with the Master System version and the Mega Drive/Genesis Version - yeah I was a Sonic fanboy as a kid) This game was special to me at the time. It was a mind blowing game as what I played on a current gen system, I can also take with me anywhere. Now seeing the game after so many years, I see the cut-backs. It's fair given the hardware I used to have the TV adapter with the super long antenna that you need to move around also. That was awesome also
The amount of development planning that went into the 16-BIT versions was definitely not included in the 8-BIT pseudo-sequels(?) and were most likely rushed. I was 4 or 5 at the time my brother had Sonic 2 for the Game Gear (we never owned a master system and let's be honest, who did?) and Sonic 2 is one of the earliest games i remember playing. Of course, my brother would have to input the level select code since he was 5 years older, and I didn't really get far past the Hanglider. They're not great games, they're worth playing mostly out of curiosity mostly.
If you are going to do every 8-bit sonic game, can you pls cover tails adventure? The only person I know that actually reviewed the game was SomeonecallmeJohnny.
Great video Kris, I love watching your analyses. And while I will never play this game, it’s good to know your take on it :) Also, the music @ 14:34 reminds me of Super Mario Six Golden Coins on gameboy!
I like the 8-bit versions of the first Sonic The hedgehog more than the 16-bit version. I personally feel the levels have better pacing and more variety.
There are certainly parts of Sonic Game Gear that I actually like more than its 16-bit counterpart, namely certain new stages and the soundtrack. A few tracks I seriously prefer over the original, namely Labyrinth Zone's new theme, as well as the all-new Sky Base level. Some true 8-bit bangers there.
I'm a little sad you didn't mention Scrap Brain Zone's music...it's really good! There's also an unused Marble Zone tune in the game, as well, meaning that it could've been planned for the port. The game has it's faults, yes, but I still really love it personally. I'm happy you gave it a fair shake, though. A lot of people tend to ignore Sonic 1 on Game Gear.
3:44 pretty sure this was impossible to notice on a real sega game gear back then. Could be that they needed the extra colors for the spinning sign at the end.
I think it's simply a mistake. There is definitely a palette swap when you reach the end zone but the blue reserved for Sonic must have been a different color and no one noticed. It doesn't happen on the Master System version. The mistake must have been noticed because they swapped the sprite in that version. It's a bigger Sonic sprite.

That may be the biggest example of personal preference, though ;)
yeah, it's much better on the SMS. It really plays more like a Mario than a Sonic game, tho.
Hey there. Where are you? Miss your videos
Hello! My videos miss you too :)
No, platforms are MY favorite genre. Give them back right now!
Sorry, he called it.

Hey Kris. I've been a subscriber for years now, and I just wanted to let you know I miss your videos! Hope you're okay man.
Please come back😢
Missing your content! Hope all is well.
A year passed and still no word from implant games, so that probably makes this a dead channel. I could be wrong.😞
Loved this game on the sega master system
its also a bit annoying watching you walk past secrets
Jungle zone on SMSD you fall you die. the master system is far superior to this one. check out the last boss in that versin an you will see it. trust me dude. play the SMS version and you will love it
+ 1
Still secretly waiting.
Same here
I miss you, bud! Wishing you well in 2022
Hope you’ve been well, dude! It’s hard to keep going… I’m at 3000 subs, and 10% of you, still trying to make vids, and I totally know how overwhelmingly hopeless and annoying it can get… you made 500 videos! That’s incredible… so much work.
Hope you're doing well.
Come back to us
I hope you are having a good life man!
Even though I consider the 8-bit version of sonic as a great game (look at my profile picture lol) and I disagree with some of your arguments, I enjoyed your review, as I do with every single one of your videos, because these are great : )
I love your youtube channel.
Please come back to do more retrospective videos for games.
Great video and analysis as usual. Thanks for highlighting the music! I'd be fascinated to see you look at the SMS version one day
I love your reviews. I wish I was older and more successful so I can drink some wine and sit on my comfy couch and warm room while listening to you review games.
I had this game as a kid (along with the Master System version and the Mega Drive/Genesis Version - yeah I was a Sonic fanboy as a kid)
This game was special to me at the time. It was a mind blowing game as what I played on a current gen system, I can also take with me anywhere.
Now seeing the game after so many years, I see the cut-backs. It's fair given the hardware
I used to have the TV adapter with the super long antenna that you need to move around also. That was awesome also
This game was cool as a bonus in sonic adventure Dx
COME BACKKKK
The amount of development planning that went into the 16-BIT versions was definitely not included in the 8-BIT pseudo-sequels(?) and were most likely rushed. I was 4 or 5 at the time my brother had Sonic 2 for the Game Gear (we never owned a master system and let's be honest, who did?) and Sonic 2 is one of the earliest games i remember playing. Of course, my brother would have to input the level select code since he was 5 years older, and I didn't really get far past the Hanglider. They're not great games, they're worth playing mostly out of curiosity mostly.
I’m glad you did a review on this game
If you are going to do every 8-bit sonic game, can you pls cover tails adventure? The only person I know that actually reviewed the game was SomeonecallmeJohnny.
Come
Back to us!!
Never mentioned that the colors are enhanced for Game Gear, brighter and more colorful than master system. Great little game.
Great video Kris, I love watching your analyses. And while I will never play this game, it’s good to know your take on it :)
Also, the music @ 14:34 reminds me of Super Mario Six Golden Coins on gameboy!
I like the 8-bit versions of the first Sonic The hedgehog more than the 16-bit version.
I personally feel the levels have better pacing and more variety.
Does anyone know what happened to this channel?
I came to the comments to find out myself :(

Same
I never noticed Sonic's color changing nearing the end of the level, that's so weird! Great video
SithLordMikeyP maybe they were initially thinking of using a sunset effect or something.
Honestly, Sonic 1 Game Gear is my all-time favorite Sonic game. I’ve played all of the classic Genesis games, though this one still is my favorite.
Where’d you go?
