The biggest mystery of academia is how every meeting includes some old guy who falls asleep after five minutes, wakes up five minutes from the end and then asks incredibly perceptive questions. The second biggest mystery is how we can improve the gender balance to the point where 50% of meetings include some old woman who does that.
Complacency is a bad thing. The fire in the Mt. Blanc tunnel could have been averted if the Italians had not switched off alert systems because they were sick of it kicking off false alarms.
