Absolutely amazing turorial. This was perfect for understanding the arrangements for ambient music, especially for pop/electronic producers who are used to 8 bar loops of for 4 chords and not 16 bar loops of 4 chords. Thank you for sharing your winsdom and teaching style with us. Love you enthusiasm for music!
Ian, what an excellent video. This is the first youtube tutorial I've seen for 'ambient music composition' that actually shows some composition and not someone twiddling software knobs! This was so useful and I'll be applying these lessons in my projects.
You are interesting enough and I'd like to watch. I did try, but they just kept coming and I couldn't get past 1:30. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Please, please drop the stock images.
Very kind of you to say so, Steve , but not everyone seems to share your view and, unfortunately, I have to dance with UA-cam's algorithm 😢 Might I suggest you use the Timeline times to jump to the tutorial bit which,is far cleaner 😊
Such a great walkthrough that's perfect for beginners as you say, but it's also great for those who've been around the block a few times. It's nice to hear and see things spelled out sometimes just as a way of being refreshed. I picked up several new angles that I found really helpful and hope to be able to work them into my future music. Thanks so much Ian!!
That is a very clear and understandable explanation of chord progressions. I have spent many many years as a semi-pro sound engineer working in both live and recording situations (mostly in the acoustic/folk field) plus creating Am Dram sfx and despite having worked closely with many talented pro musicians I never managed to catch music off of them. 😄 Thanks for making basic music theory relatable to an ignoramus in such things. I am sub-ed so I am looking forward to plowing through your 'back catalogue'. Cheers from Scotland.
Hi Ralph - thank you for your kind comments 👍 Yes, it would be cool if we could learn music by osmosis - I could come up north and brush up my sound engineering skills 😊 Hope you enjoy the other videos.
Great video, Ian.. succinct and and to-the-point, and yet packed with details and tips. You have a real talent, my friend, for sharing what some might consider the complexities of Music Theory, in a very accessible and informal way..a real joy to watch your work. 🙂👍

Ian - new subscriber here. So glad I stumbled upon your channel. This video is very nicely done. It's content has sparked ideas that will take days to explore. I'm powering up my DAW, now, to further embed the concepts. I'll be back.
That's very kind, thank you very much 🙏👍 I was hoping viewers would take the idea and rrun with it - Good luck with your projects, do let us know how you gett on 👍
Add reverb Honestly, I just look for sounds which seem to fit and probably tweak them a little, maybe add reverb , possibly delay. I uused to enjoyy synth programming but there are far too many synths around to learn how to use them all )and I struggle with my eyes) so I mainly use presets and sometimes tweak a bit. There are probably lots of programming videos if you want to go deeper
Thank you for this video! it let me understand much more about making ambient music. I would also want to know about the preset (MC - PD Rising Star) that you use, it is one of your own? or where is it from?
Thank you, so glad you found it helpful. I don't remember where the patch came from - there are lots of free Vital patches on the net. It's probably a preset that I tweaked. The point is, it's not really about a specific sound - just about any synth can produce super pad sounds - it's about the process and using it to create your own music 😊
@IanWaugh I did try to search for it, but no result. Since I am pretty new with this without any music background. I struggle as I go along😂, I just have this image or sound that I want but could not find it any where. Vital plugin seems to be a full package for me to create a dreamy like pad, but so many buttons and no knowledge what I am doing, that's why I ask, since your videos so easy to understand. 2 months ago, suddenly want to make this type of music (now I know they are called Ambient music). Watch a lot UA-cam video, some I understand, most of them are too hard for me. What I am trying to say is I understand most of the things that you talk about, and I have learned alot. I will go through the other too. Thank you very much and keep going...💪💪💪
@@IanWaugh Hihi, I am using Tracktion Waveform... All my installs are free since I am starting out having no idea what I am doing. @@celiatai2424 OK, that's a good start and free is great. You can make great music with free stuff and, it's as good idea to explore what you have before looking to buy stuff. I'm aware of Waveform but not familiar with it but it probably comes with lots of synths and FX so learning what they can do and how to use them is where to start As for these tutorials, they are about the process , not the sounds and there will almost certainly be synths in Waveform that can create pads. Experiment and have fun 👍
Hi - the actual preset is not really important, you just need to use a pad you like which can be from any synth at all. Some of the synths in your DAW - whatever it is - will have lots of pads.. I think the Vital pad I used was one of a free set by Chris (www.youtube.com/@s1gns0fl1fe) although I'm afraid I can't recall exactly under which video this one came from. But don't sweat it 😊
