Johnny Cage has been considered the comic relief officially since MK4. He always had a funny personality at times but after that game, they went all out with it. People look at Johnny more for being funny than his skills these days. Similar to Paul Phoenix in Tekken. He was once on par with Kazuya but after a few games, he's considered a goofball.
I saw both during MK9. Like him thinking it was all show at first and then proving himself to be extremely capable despite being shown shit just got real. He was funny but still had heart
Even in the first MK movie back in the day, he got annoyed when people were calling him a fraud and entered the tournament (when tricked by Shang Sung) to prove he wasn't a fraud. Yes he's cocky, but that is because he know he really is a great fighter, and enjoys showing off his skills
Also, in that movie he kills Goro. Johnny Cage in that movie is as good as the Outworld's MK Champion, and I think he's never been that badass until MKX.
Quite a bit of dialogue between 10 and 11 suggests to me that amid all that Hollywood glitz and glamor that his agent was one of the few people who genuinely had his back. The intro with Kano is just *chef's kiss* In some of his endings, I also got the impression that he's a very self-motivated person when he has a proper path to go on (with Raiden training him in one game ending). Since he was already a fighter before being an actor, he's already the quite the perfectionist and has had to discern between who was friend or foe in Hollywood. Kinda wish that the writers wouldn't make him so dumb. Also Raiden in the new movies just letting JC get snicker-snackered because "it was amusing"? Come on, man. >8( He's one of my favorites, so that intro clip gave me psychic damage. 😭
Johnny Cage has always been and always will be my favorite Mortal Kombat character. He's just a classic! (Plus his fatalities in MK11 are easily the best in the game)
I think when injecting humour into a character or setting, it’s important not to overdo it and have a decent balance of serious and silly. Otherwise a comedic character can come off more like a joke character that’s impossible to take seriously. Like how John McClane from Die Hard has enough personality to liven a up a dire situation but still be credible as an action movie lead you can root for.
MK9 used Johnny as an audience surrogate: he was the player character in the first chapter so the audience could get acclimated to the world, just like Johnny was. His relationship with Sonya was about Johnny learning to be serious and Sonya lightening up and learning to trust. He had serious character development in the netherrealm games.
That is something you're right that people get a little too caught up on is the comic relief side of Johnny and they seem to forget that he is a legit martial artist who is able to hold his own against God's demons and monsters. Arguably when he was killed anytime he he's usually the one that gets killed and whenever he dies it's always till like some of the most powerful beings in the universe. As much as people trash the movie version of Johnny Cage from 1995 he might be the most accurate version that's what's kind of funny in all this. The most accurate is definitely MKX and I can see why everybody really likes him and MKX it might be the perfect Johnny Cage but they do show that he is a martial artist first in the 1995 movie who people have lost respect for his fighting ability that's his whole motivation and he does defeat goro even if it is by cheating technically
@@DPProductionz you got to always account for there's somebody out there who thinks that he was the worst part of the movie. Not every joke lands but he is pretty much the definitive Johnny Cage up to this point aside from maybe MK9

love how you refer to Kylie Minogue as "The Cammy Actress" when she's one of the most famous Australian pop stars of all time and exceedingly more famous than the johnny cage actor
Maybe not so much these days. Every stars' power begins to fade after a while. Think about how much exposure each person gets on a regular basis in current times. The playing field may be more level than you think.
Not worse than Van Damme was a great fighter before to be actor. He was a ballet dancer not a professional fighter, he practiced a lot of martial arts and with flexibility from his ballet practice, had some visual skills than nobody have at this time, he goes to hollywood with his best friend (Tang Po in Bloodsport) to be famous. He never was a champion, he is really like Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat, very cocky and steven seagall is too. I don't want to minimize what Van Damme did, for a little Belgian to be famous as martial artist and a worldwide known actor is incredible, but don't make him a champ in a ring, he was not. (Chuck Norris, Dolf Lundgren, etc were fighters before, this part is right)
If you notice though that the fighter side of Johnney Cage surfaces when he is older where as in the movies and games such as mk11 and mk9 he is inexperienced meaning he gets better with age
I think a reasonable excuse for this depiction of JC would be the outlandish otherworldly look of the fighters and setting he’s surrounded by. I can imagine JC connecting the dots more easily in a grounded setting. With that said, the writers could have done more to show this or anything relaying that he thinks everything’s fake.
Johnny Cage will always be The True Chosen One in my eyes. It should have been him, and if not, then he should have been the Second Chosen One after Liu Kang's fall not Cassie Cage of all people smh
I could not of been more disgusted w/ Johnny Cage's portrayal in these animated films last 2yrs. Yes - the inaccuracies were awful... But he was more hateable than any character ever made! The constant corny, witty 1-line jokes that saturated his dialogue. The gimmick of "he thinks this is still a movie set". Whole thing was terrible.
Johnny Cage is my favourite MK character i like the idea of how this funny, cocky jerk like character is revealed to be a kickass figher nut the only issue i have with him is how his powers how do they work? Johnny says he could only use them when his family is in danger( same with Cassie) Yet both of them canonically use their powers over and over again
So what a piece together on this is that they can kind of use the attack to only like boost some of their original attacks like their kicks and whatever but it's true power is supposed to be against the elder gods when Johnny Cage and Cassie cage fought shinnok they both won due to their green ability which is kind of like a kryptonite to the elder gods or at least that's what it seems like since there's no way realistically that Johnny Cage or Cassie would beat shinnok but besides that they're magic green stuff is only there to slightly boost their original attacks like kicks and stuff and for projectiles like the green ball that Johnny Cage throws
It's probably similar to liu kang's fire ability. I chose to view it like it's part of them or like their spirit. Like maybe their chi and they are able to harness it naturally. That's why Johnny can throw it too.

Johnny Cage has always been my favorite and I gotta say I felt like IX got it closest to Ashby's portrayal from the movie - which we all know set the tone for what we expected for so many of our favs. MKIX just felt like the perfect blend of a fighter who got lost in the celebrity of the new lifestyle. And we get to watch him be brought back to reality and his roots of being a fighter. Could just be me, but I love his personality in IX. Dang...both IX and X did him aight.
One thing you forgot to mention was that Johnny's reason for entering the tournament was to prove to people that he was a real fighter and it wasn't just Hollywood magic. More proof he was always a fighter first.
I’m not so sure that his Hollywood persona is *super* secondary. Though I agree that the WB cartoons took it way too far. I mean, in almost all of his Midway ladder endings, he’s capitalized on the things he’s went through in the tournaments. He straight up died off screen in MK3, and when he miraculously came back to life in MK4, he gave an asshole Oscar speech. He’s never been a total 100% taken serious badass in the OG timeline. However, personality wise, he is my favorite character.
typo: not for so long he was handled well in mk9 and mk10 (sonya doesnt deserve johnny btw i’ll stand on that hill forever) but this movie just blows on his character
I’m glad someone’s calling out this bullshit scene. If Johnny freaking cage was attacked by some musclebound freak with weapons he would *salivate* at the idea of getting _all of that_ on video! Then proceed to upload that shit to World Star to further fuel his fame and legitimacy as a Ex-Professional Face Puncher! Golden opportunity freaking wasted!
Glad somebody made this video, been thinking they get Johnny wrong 90% of the time for years now. It's a little frustrating how the more one note characters and the slightly more shallow characters (imo) get more attention (ahem Scorpion) whilst characters like Johnny get misrepresented, Kuai Liang is side lined hard most the time, Mileena is misrepresented, Kung Lao just isn't Kung Lao anymore, etc.
Thank you, I was saying the saying the same thing for years. The original JC wasn't that clownish like how he is now, it took Mortaro and an undefeated army to kill him. The writers focus too much on Johnny being the comic relief and it got people thinking he's not capable of beating fighters like Subzero and Scorpion.
Johnny Cage is based off of Jean Claude Van Damme, Liu Kang is based off of Bruce Lee, Raiden and Shang Tsung are based off of the villain characters from the movie "Big trouble in little China", and Sonya is based off of Cynthia Rothrock. Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro are based off of Indian or Greek mythology. Gotta love Johnny Cage, he's the funny guy. It's awesome to see the original MK characters grow, change, and develop over the decades. Let's hope we get to see MK12 in the near future
Underdawg: ''I don't think the writers understand Johnny Cage very well'' Me: ''I don't think those writers undersstand and respect the MK franchise very well''
I agree 100% I really grew to love Cage in MKX. Dude is a great fighter and all the fans who hated how he defeated Shinnok are crazy it didn't bother me at all. Cage was picked by Raiden as a hero in MK9 and it finally paid off.
I find it hilarious that people like to say that Animated Movies are superior to Live action Movies, and yet have a Worst version of Johnny Cage compared to the live action ones. 😅🤦
What I like about Johnny Cage is that he spent this entire franchise questioning everything he saw from Raiden throwing Lightning to Baraka's blades. Yet nobody around him questioned how he's able to throw energy orbs and Shadows Kicks.😂😂😂😂
How does Johnny Cage’s magical powers work? Is it like a ki thing where he can use it whenever he wants can only just shoot energy attacks and enhance his strength or can he use it in more creative ways? Cause I remember hearing that the green energy only works when a persons love ones are in danger yet he seems to use it when that isn’t the case
It's a source of energy that we never get any concrete answer of the source of, all that's known is that it is divine-adjacent as he descends from a cult that created warriors for the Gods (which is hinted to be The Elder Gods). That's why he was able to repel Shinnok's Elder God Magic despite being a Mortal, something that Liu Kang couldn't even do despite being the Chosen One when he fought Raiden in MK9.
@@maylabrown4584 I know but it’s been said that it only works when a Persons love ones are in danger yet we consistently see Johnny use it when none of his loved ones are around
@@hattoripool1533 Oh you mean the Green Armor? Yeah that ability only activates once a Green Glow User has something they love in danger, Johnny's activated it to defend Sonya and Cassie to defend Johnny and defeat Shinnok. Additionally, it seems to react to an adversarial divine force, rather than any force in general. It's a pretty OP ability, which is why Johnny should have been the one to beat Shinnok, since it allows for almost complete invulnerability against divine energies. If Johnny learned how to control it, he likely could have been unaffected by the likes of Cetrion, Geras and even Kronika herself for the most part. He would have been the perfect person to fight Onaga too.
This completely sums up all the problems I've had with his character but could never explain. He's always been my favorite but it never made sense the way he was portrayed.

JC was already my third favorite MK character. If we had a different story about him following the whole idea that he's a fighter before and actor, he might've been my favorite
Johnny should still be cocky and funny but he should absolutely be confident in his skills and eager to fight. Maybe the writers are always trying to nerf him so that he isn't so cool that he overshadows everyone else. I enjoyed Johnny from the old 90s movie. He went to the tournament to prove himself and critics he wasn't a fake. He defeated Scorpion and Goro. His character was treated with respect.
There’s also the fact is that Johnny literally went to the Mortal Kombat island tournaments to prove to the world that he is a legit fighter and he’s not some hack
So many people want this perfect fusion of serious martial arts guy and part Hollywood guy. We already have Liu Kang & other martial artists around to fill that "serious fighter" role. If you look at it this way, we already have both sides of Van Damme represented in MK games: the serious and dedicated Liu Kang and the playful Johnny Cage. Having Johnny's character be both simultaneously while also having other characters with the same individual traits seems redundant. Sure it may not be represented the way you want but both sides of Van Damme are present in MK already. Like it or hate it, that's the way it is now.
Yo, will you make a Motaro video at some point? That guy has been dissed more than anyone else at this point, and is in envy of Reptile, Kung Lao, and Goro.
Battle for the Realms was complete feminist garbage, the women had to look better than the men. Sonya is nowhere near Johnny's level and Jax is literally a Cyborg so she can't touch him either. Matter of fact, I'd go as far as to say that when johnny gets serious and if written correctly, he's on Liu Kang's level as a fighter.

@@nemesis3587 Yeah I agree, the movie's lack of violence and way of managing some characters helped him too much
But I really like his personality in the movie because he's not annoying or spoiled, he is snarky but takes things seriously when needed and was a competent fighter

They way Johnny Cage was portrayed in the animation film was absolutely disgusting they made him look like a idiot and didn't even show his shadow energy at all. He is the only reason why I have became a mortal Kombat fan.
I Couldn't Agree more with this Statement. The Animated Johnny Cage Made you Wish he got Killed Off. Whereas The Video Game Johnny Cage was Far Better. the story of the character he was one of the best fighters and people tought his real moves were special effects so he went to mk to show he is real.
his real story jc the reason.mk exists is jean claude van damme but he quitted
That’s how I saw Johnny Cage but in the animated movies he completely lost it
@@Deathmare235 jc= jean claude, mk was suppose to be based on his movie blood sport. ironic van damme was karate champion but his movie is based on frank dux that is a phony fake master. so is a real master as an actor playing the fake master. still a good movie though
The intro with Kano is just *chef's kiss*
In some of his endings, I also got the impression that he's a very self-motivated person when he has a proper path to go on (with Raiden training him in one game ending).
He's one of my favorites, so that intro clip gave me psychic damage. 😭
Johnny Cage has always been and always will be my favorite Mortal Kombat character. He's just a classic!
(Plus his fatalities in MK11 are easily the best in the game)
And the funniest
It's weird how JC is easily the most practical lead but they push squares like Lui Kang Raiden Subzero Scorpion nonsense.
Facts! He’s such a fun character and only says what the audience is thinking In most scenarios
"WHO HIRED THIS GUY WHAT THE FU**"
This is exactly how I felt lately with this movie and MK 11, Pretty much is making Johnny regress and not giving him the proper respect he deserves.
Mk11 is giving him respect though
@@Deathmare235 WE WANT MORE RESPECT!
MK11 shows the difference between Young johnny and mature johnny well
I think when injecting humour into a character or setting, it’s important not to overdo it and have a decent balance of serious and silly. Otherwise a comedic character can come off more like a joke character that’s impossible to take seriously.
Like how John McClane from Die Hard has enough personality to liven a up a dire situation but still be credible as an action movie lead you can root for.
I love grown man Johnny Cage, i love when brash characters grow to be smarter or even wiser, but gotta stay in character, that is indeed important
Who trashes the movie version of Johnny Cage? Linden Ashby was one of the best performances in that movie.

I mean.... maybe back then but nowadays she pretty much is 'the Cammy actress'.
Guess it’s cause he was fresh out of the frying pan I mean he’s probably a better fighter in mkx than before since he’s apart of special forces
I think that, realistically, JC would think that Baraka is some kind of crazed extra that wants to fight him to get attention or something
He got the best character growth in the new mk timeline and acc got respected surprisingly enough
I guess this eplains why Johnny Cage was using Nunchucks in the older Mortal Kombat games. How come we barely see this side of Johnny Cage?
Blame the writers
Because the real life guy didn't use weapons a lot either. What made you think it should be normal, if Claude himself wasn't big on that?
Johnny Cage will always be The True Chosen One in my eyes.
It should have been him, and if not, then he should have been the Second Chosen One after Liu Kang's fall not Cassie Cage of all people smh
MKX writers dropped the ball there, that game was perfect to let Johnny be the hero for once, be the hero that Raiden saw in the previous game.

Johnny Cage is my favourite MK character
i like the idea of how this funny, cocky jerk like character is revealed to be a kickass figher
nut the only issue i have with him is how his powers
how do they work?
Johnny says he could only use them when his family is in danger( same with Cassie)
Yet both of them canonically use their powers over and over again
Mk9 talks about his powers and what they are I think, I to am also confuse and just use that
Unfortunately mortal Kombat has an inconsistency issue in these regards

I was so annoyed when they nerfed his plus frames in MK11, but I never dropped my boy and I still use him even today
This aged like fine wine. One year later, JCVD skin for Johnny Cage in MK1.
One thing you forgot to mention was that Johnny's reason for entering the tournament was to prove to people that he was a real fighter and it wasn't just Hollywood magic. More proof he was always a fighter first.

I love this video. Finally someone to put my favorite character on the map the proper way. Well explained 👏🏾 hopefully writers follow up on this
I’m not so sure that his Hollywood persona is *super* secondary. However, personality wise, he is my favorite character.
johnny cage has been my favorite character since the first mk movie and seeing him mistreated for so long hurts
typo: not for so long he was handled well in mk9 and mk10 (sonya doesnt deserve johnny btw i’ll stand on that hill forever) but this movie just blows on his character
TrueUnderDawg is the REAL misunderstood guy, that’s why he’s an underdog! ❤️
"Blue light is dangerous" has it in his background for the ad
Johnny Cage is based off of Jean Claude Van Damme, Liu Kang is based off of Bruce Lee, Raiden and Shang Tsung are based off of the villain characters from the movie "Big trouble in little China", and Sonya is based off of Cynthia Rothrock. Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro are based off of Indian or Greek mythology. Gotta love Johnny Cage, he's the funny guy.

It's a pretty OP ability, which is why Johnny should have been the one to beat Shinnok, since it allows for almost complete invulnerability against divine energies. Johnny should still be cocky and funny but he should absolutely be confident in his skills and eager to fight. Maybe the writers are always trying to nerf him so that he isn't so cool that he overshadows everyone else.
