I watched some of this in the morning, then came back to it later. The first words I hear after hitting play again were "if you're gonna vibrate you might as well vibrate hard". Awesome.
Math quiz. What is the result of: Waffles/relax + Glitchy/relax = Serpent Shield: Don't know what Glitchy is on about. I always use the serpent shield. After making an iron pick, it is often the second iron age gear item I make, because even though it needs iron age materials, it has silver age stats. - Only needs 4 iron to craft and a further 2+4, total 10 for a fully upgraded one. (The other iron age shields require 8 to 10 iron to craft and a total of 21 to 25 iron for fully upgraded ones.) - It is absolutely incredible for the plains, because it reduces all pierce dmg by 50%, before the blocking calculation is done. So you can block the only two plains enemies you cannot easily evade (Deathsquitos and Fuling spear throwers), with low stat requirements. And contrary to all other resistances, it stacks with root harnesk or bonemass! Thus you can explore plains in relative safety, before ever going to the mountains. - Pirce dmg is halved by shield resistance; reduced by block armor; halved by root harnesk resist; reduced by armor. - Thus it is also absolutely fantastic to train the blocking skill, because you usually do that with a pit full of archers (skeleton and/or draugr from a spawner or event). That is not only because of it's unique pierce resist, but also because it has 25% more durability than all other shields!
I can see the shields being very useful if you've ramped up the enemy difficulty. In normal mode... I go buckler every time, the parry is just way too good. The shield stats are amazing though, and in harder modes, parry rarely works. So I can see both sides of arguments lol.
@@meriwidget3474 it makes pre-mountains plains trips entirely accessible and easy to do, as well as being very helpful against wolves when looking for early silver. It also looks awesome on the wall, especially in pairs on either side of a good trophy (like the serpent!) or your fireplace.
I came back to Valhiem a few days ago with my friend. I don’t know if you remember my comments, but you are the first I went to after playing. Thank you Waffles. Thank you so much.
Day serpents have always been a thing, theyre just rare. Mark that spot on your map for future serpent hunting for food and especially for catching a serpent as a pet if you decide you want one. The shield is a mandatory component of a block skill trainer till you can make a black metal shield.
I actually came up with a theory in the edit! I think the serpent may have spawned in the plains bione where it seemed to be storming! Maybe. Who knows
@@WafflesGamesProbably I can personally confirm that serpents can and do spawn in broad daylight in clear weaither. Its how I got my pet serpent (twice actually, since I didnt properly fence off my tame wolves the first time and they ate it...:P) Day snakes arent common but theyre absolutely a thing, and if you ever have ambitions to catch one for your base you'll likely need to note the locations where they can spawn. Its possible you can catch a storm-spawned snake, I honestly havent tried, but night-snakes despawn at dawn so you cant capture them, so day-snakes are where its at for me.
@@WafflesGamesProbably I a few times encountered "clear daylight serpents", in areas where I high speed sailed through before, but never in uncharted waters. That observation is consistent with the assumption, that they just remained there, from a rainstorm spawn events, on a previous journey through that ocean chunk. If you check your map on video at 13:40, you can see that you sail on an exact course, you sailed before. If you then closely watch the mini-map, until you encounter the serpent at 14:06, you can see that you followed exactly along the previous route and the serpent appears reasonably close to it. So to me that looks just like a rainstorm serpent, that remained there and rendered in, when you came close enough. A couple of years ago, I watched a video of someone extensively testing it, and he found that about half of all serpents spawn out of render distance, and thus you never have a chance to spot them. I also observed myself, that by (Longboat) sailing at full speed, you miss the majority, because they get out of sight before you notice them. So it is quite reasonable, that they just render in, when you come back later. If I want to hunt them, I thus sail full speed ~10 sec, then reduce speed for ~10 sec to check behind me and rinse and repeat. Then you find those, that you would miss otherwise. That way I often catch one to three per night, and two to five during rainstorm nights. On my current world, I have 21 serpent trophies from that. So I must have killed over 60 of them, because trophies only drop 1/3 of the time, and I might have lost some to the deep. I was sailing around quite a lot for that, night and day, and never found a "clear daylight serpent" in uncharted waters.
I worked a nightclub bar for years and can confirm the Cha Cha Slide is an abomination to music and one of the most obnoxious and horrible things ever to have assaulted my ears. Glitchy could not be more wrong on this one, Waffles definitely has the high ground here (it's over Glitchy!) 🤣
lol u know.. this banter you both do.. things u say.. i love it.. as i have said befor. but. now.... im doing it in real life lol.. dam it. gets me into trouble lol..

Your analysis is pretty spot on here, the serpent shield is not in any way the best choice overall but in key conditions it reigns supreme.

Oh my God, Glitchy's death in the swamp was hilarious!
Valheim+Snow Patrol???? This is my dream episode 🤩
Poor Glitchy. The unrequited love from Waffles.

I love how neither of you brought poison potions...
It's the swamps!! We're wayyyy beyond it! Glitchy just got unlucky haha
I'm so excited for this to go live, I need shiny new things!!! ... What a cliff hanger.. you.. beans..
It might be technically the first new swamp you were looking in, because the other might be connected to the Bonemass swamp.
Hah! Win on a technicality!??
The chaos that the two of you create is priceless! Waffles,; you might want to take a look at the mod Sated by Crystal, for your modded playthrough.
That looks like a good one!! Thanks!
Nap potion would be awesome!
I use the serpent shield....for decoration
Beef + beans so chili =)
"have u ever seen a fish before?"
... I use the Serpent shield.😮
