Chinese BR-6B Geiger Counter Review and Test

  • Review and test of the Chinese BR-6B Geiger counter, which is now turning up online for less than £50, for that price it is a very good investment however it does have a limitation that it maxes out at 99.99 microsieverts which is a fairly low number for a Geiger counter, however if you are using it for low level readings this is totally fine.
In this video I compared it to the Soeks 01M to give you an idea of size scale and settings with a similar style unit.

The BR-6a is just for electromagnetic radiation, the BR-6b is for nuclear radiation and the BR-6c for both.

The only model I can find is BR-6, what does that read?

@@TaiganTundra If it is around 20 dollars it'll most likely be the BR-6a, when it is around 60 it'll probably be the BR-6b. I would at this point buy the very sleek Soex or Soeks 112, which is about as large as a pencil. It might depend on what you want to have though, the BR-6 series is good and you will have a nicely large display. The Soeks is a real brand though and isn't much more expensive. If you want certainty with the BR-6, I recommend to just ask the seller before buying it, just to be sure...

Great comparison / review. There is also more of a gap between the geiger tube in the Chinese counter and it's case where the Soeks has almost no space between tube and case.

Yeah I still like this Chinese one, despite it's flaws it's great to have permanently turned on, using a USB cable on the wall.

Cool videos mate, can you recommend what to buy out of the BR-6, smart lab Geiger and the Cajoe? Or any others in that price range. It’s for a SHTF situation.
    Cheers

I think the ticking sound on the BR-6b responded nicely quick on the strontium, whereas the Soeks was in my opinion a bit slow acting.

Translating the 3 different variants print on box. BR-6a is electromagnetic detector. BR-6b is nuclear radiation detector. BR-6c is both of BR-6a and BR-6b combined.

The Soeks has an SBM20 tube which is a little more sensitive than the M4011. On 2 test sources, K and Th it read 45% and 41% higher respectively, the background readings were basically the same. The SBM20 is more sensitive to beta. Of course this is just one test and it was not done by myself. The SBM20's can be very old and a little hit and miss, the M4011's are new.

Which Geiger counter would you recommend for 100 usd max? One for personal dose measuring average that can do emf as well. Thank you for clarification about the tube am looking for one and have literally no idea.

I saw a $100 Chinese Geiger counter recently that had a measurement max of 50,000 microsievert and thought that top end wasn't high enough, 100 microsievert top end is definitely worse.

Thank-you so much for doing the review of This guy. There are alot of them on eBay at various prices. I want the soeks but it's too pricy for me at moment. To just measure ambient levels it should do the job. If 99.99 is an oh shit level, what level is the average daily ok level? As I want to purchase a Geiger, air quality metre and an EMF detector, this little guy will fit the bill.

Average hourly radiation varies around the world but for me it's normally 0.20-30 microsieverts an hour. That's like 0.1 MilliRoentgen per hour

    • @RuffKutz

I just Recieved my BR-6B from eBay. I had it running for about an hour while driving my car. It didn't go over .22 microsieverts and the average stayed at 13. I noticed however that the graph did not change at all over the course of the time I had the device turned on. I'm wondering if it just runs until it fills up the bar and then it stops until you reset it. Otherwise seems to be ok and it appears I have no radiation around me lol.

The problem with GM, if you see increased radioactivity, it could be normal or not normal, GM don't tell you that.
You will need a very expensive spectrometer, along with a lot of specific and scientific knowledge to process what you are looking at.
