In fact, Zhou Shen knelt down beside his bed in his hotel room after his performance in XiAn, China. Due to technical glitch his performance time was cut short by one song. He wanted to compensate his fans for the lost. This song was one of three nominated by fans. And he sang through earphone mic wrapped with tissue paper.

ZS was supposed to sing this song in a show. But time ran out and he never got the chance to sing it. So he returned to his hotel room, decided to record it in his iPhone and post it for his fans as he didn’t want to disappoint them. He was holding an iPhone compatible mike and cover it with a tissue, knelt beside his bed and sing it. It’s so natural for him.
It's a live stream on his personal channel. Pretty sure its not pre-recorded.
Zhou Shen uploaded this video on his Weibo ( take it as an equivalent of Twitter in China) as a compensate for the fans. Earlier that day when he was performing at a music festival, one of his songs on the show list got canceled due to some technological glitches. So later he said on his weibo that the fans can request one song that he hasn’t sung on stage before and he will record it after he gets back to the hotel. So there you have it: Think of Me by Zhou Shen, kneeling in his hotel room (there was no place for him to set his phone, so he put it on the night stand and knelt by the bed and recorded the song with the headphones)

His voice is simply touching and healing. I would say his voice is between men and women. The more I listen to his songs, the more I feel that way. So unique.

Zhou Shen is unique with a beautiful/charming/angelic voice, a vocal range from moderately-high-pitched male baritone to high-pitched female soprano, and amazingly smooth vocal navigation-skills. His speaking voice sounds like 10-12 years boy, also a bit element of girly voice. He used to be often teased and mocked by his fellow pupils simply because of his girly-like voice when he was young. His singing voice of high-pitched female tone had came naturally at young ages before he started learning musics. Of course, studying Bel Canto from the age of 20 and hard training/practice have enhanced his voice quality and singing skills. He sings comfortably/effortlessly in high-pitched smooth female tone with full of various emotions. I like his performance very much and want see more of him. Bless Zhou Shen!
I believe his training in bel canto in Lviv was all done as a tenor. He was only trained in technique using lower registers. My understanding is that he got nodules on his vocal chords from forcing himself and sing lower than natural for him, and had to take a year off back in China to recuperate before finishing his degree.
He has said that he just learned to sing in his much higher naturally comfortable range by singing in his room alone. He had been told there was no place for his high voice in music, no chance of a vocal career. They were so wrong.
In the beginning, the word he said means "I can't sing this song well", and the mic he used in the video was just an earphone（I don't know the brand） which was covered by a wet napkin.

How have we in the 'West' moved so far away from real musicianship that so many are so stunned when they hear the real deal? Months ago, Zhou Shen tried to sing "Think of me" on the stage of Super Vocal, but at that moment he was too nervous that forgot the lyrics, so he sang only a very short version (still beautiful), and lost the battle. That's why he said "I'm not sure" at the beginning of this video, and people kept asking for a complete version. Thank you Zhou Shen, and thank you Frank for the reaction.

Actually, the different types of music you talk about in the west, they have in China. The show Super Vocal, in which Zhou Shen is one of 36 male singers, in 2018, had for its entire purpose to bring classical singing / bel canto into the public eye. As it really was/is like here... only certain people were into it, and the guys feel like they are in a tiny world of classical singing, singing to each other. The show (many-episode kind of competition reality show) had a mission of kixing popular music and classical... and this is one of Zhou Shen's personal goals.
You can see that he loves popular musicals like Cats, Sound of Music, LaLa Land, Phantom of the Opera. And pop songs. Films and anime.
In China, he does a lot of very Chinese songs with a very Chinese way of singing, folk songs etc, which finds a lot of favour with Chinese audiences. These don't sound like opera/bel canto at all.
So, I am thinking that you are overestimating how popular trained bel canto singers are in China.
Btw, I think a lot of the popularity of Dimash and Zhou Shen is that they are young guys with dramatic shows. Zhou Shen gains a lot of popularity through being a participant and host on many reality shows, game shows, children's shows, singing Disney songs, being charming, funny, sociable and talkative.
