When watching obsession mv, I just unconsciously get closer and closer to the screen, as if being hypnotized, this is an obsessed song
You know why you see Kpop idols in their dance practices wearing a lot of layers, and often what we would think of as street clothes, with heavy shoes, etc. instead of workout wear? One reason is because it helps build up endurance and to condition their bodies to be able to dance on stage with their stage outfits and not be affected. (They don't wear gym clothes during a performance or concert. :D) Why it looks so effortless on stage and like they hardly even exert themselves or sweat sometimes, is because their body has become used to being dressed in layers as they work hard while wearing tight jeans and heavy shoes, etc. That is why they can perform for more than 3 hours straight and still look and sound, like they just started the concert. It's kind of like if you spend a lot of time in a sauna, after a while your body gets used to the heat and you can endure more heat for longer periods of time. :D (It's the same reason why women who have to dance in heels will practice dancing in heels instead of tennis shoes, etc.) Plus, Kpop dance studios are most often located in the basement of the company and aren't heated well, so depending on the time of year, the room can be very cold.

I think EXO has the most consistent story line in Kpop. From debut 2012 up until now. Their story line is still very much incorporated in their song lyrics, choreos and Mvs.

EXO is the group that got me into K-Pop, they are one of my ults. Their discography is insane. Vocal Kings and one of the most awarded groups in all of K-Pop (2nd only to BTS in awards if I am not mistaken). They debuted with 12 members but 3 of the chinese members left due to mistreatment from SM entertainment.
Yes Chen is a vocal power house, he is currently in the military so sadly wasn't in their most recent comeback Don't Fight The Feeling. He is also married with a baby girl :D

What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows and Suho controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc.
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept. So to really understand EXO, if you haven't already, you need to start from the very beginning and watch both of their "Mama" MVs. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events, so several of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are timed to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their comeback for their War album and Power repackaged album coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment, and its founder, Lee SooMan, has all of EXO's release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance, and it often has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO- M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote as one big group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop and it has made us question everything we have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline. Since "Obsession" some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovering that it hasn't necessarily been EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's "Jopping" storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in the "Obsession" MV, those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in "Jopping." Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs. So because the members in black are supposed to be the EXO members who are the good guys, it seems to also indicate that the members who are in SuperM are the EXO members and not their X-EXO clones. So it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, EXO has gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- EXO, Taemin/SHINee, NCT/WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force and maybe eventually take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)
The Chinese members that are not in this MV, but are important to EXO's storyline:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon (Kris left the group in April 2014.)
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) (Luhan left the group in October 2014.)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time (Tao ended activities with EXO in August 2015.)

EXO concept is very complicated. It started before they even debut. But if you want to know about them, check out vids by Cesar Oh on her channel. You need to watch their MVs first though before you check out their storyline. EXO are vocal kings and most of their songs lean towards R&B. Their live performances are even better. EXO has a new album out right now but it's not exactly a comeback as they are on hiatus due to military enlistment. It's more for the fans while waiting for them, so the songs are brighter and lighter than previous albums. Out of 9 members, 4 are in the military now, 2 have returned and 2 youngest have yet to enlist. During this hiatus, remaining members will do solo projects, i.e. Acting, solo albums, sub-unit album, modelling, variety shows, etc. So they're all booked and busy. Lay, the only Chinese member, will continue to do solo projects and run his companies in China.
Exo have amazing storys about their creation/ Revolution/their fights and....
And This mv was about a part of exo's story when their dark side came to defeat them

Yes, they have storyline and it's really great! The idea is somehow connected to some of SM's other group's storyline. They have this "SM UNIVERSE"

They are a 9 member group, 8 of them are korean (Xiumin, Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O, Kai and Sehun) and 1 is chinese (Lay). 4 of the korean members (Suho, Chen, Chanyeol and Baekhyun) are currently enlisted in the military but you can see that Chanyeol and Baek are still in the latest MV (they filmed the MV before enlisting)... about their stoyline... they have if it's not the heaviest than it's one of the heaviest storylines.... but resuming it, they are basically aliens... they came from another planet called exoplanet, also all of them have superpowers!! i love them so much. Fans can repeat and swear by the concept of this video, but we all know this song is to Exo's saesang/obsessed fans. I remember reading and watching vids from what those fans would do. Sneaking into their dorms, call them 24/7, dress up as males and follow or wait for them in the bathroom. Exo must've been glad to have this song to tell them to shut up and go away LOL

Wow you hit the nail on the head when you made a correct guess as to what the song is about. It was more about the other/ dark side of themselves they are in conflict with. Which was why in the video you see Exo side vs X-Exo side. There were 3 members not in the MV because 2 were at the military that time and one is in China.

EXO is the first group with a unique concept. So basically they are aliens coming from EXOPlanet (exo means outer as in out of this world) to protect the tree of life from the red force, and each member has a different superpower. All of their MVs are related and are a continuation to this concept. You won't regret getting into EXO Planet 🤩 You can check out the group guide and the individual guides by Cesar Oh to get a better idea about each member.
Also, if you are more interested in getting to know the Kings of Vocals, I think you can wach their MVs in a chronological order. If not, please check out Monster or Tempo or Love Shot as a 2nd reaction to EXO.
Btw, you're right, this song is about EXO (the ones in black outfits) vs X-EXO (in leather suits) their evil clones created by their enemy the Red Force and who are portrayed as the bad version of EXO.

Also- sorry if you knew this- EXO is actually a 9 member group. For this comeback, 2 members (Xuimin and D.O) were doing their required military service, and 1 member (Lay) was not be able to promote with them due to political conflict (he is a youth ambassador in China) Now unfortunately, Chen, Suho (who is the leader btw) Baekhyun and Chanyeol are in the military :(... ALSO- EXO have a show called EXO Arcade, and they just recently did a season two, that you can find on their youtube page. It’s basically them playing games and competitions. I would love if you would react to it, you do not need to watch the first season to understand.

Exo, nct and aespa has this kind of crossover between their storylines, they’re from the same universe and you’ll see the same references in theirs songs/lyrics. The most frequently is this place Kwangya, mentioned in NCT U’s 90’s Love, Exo’s Don’t fight the feeling and Aespa’s Black Mamba and Next Level

this song doesn't show it off the best but exo is definitely up there when it comes to vocals in kpop. they are actually insane when it comes to vocals.
i personally consider exo, seventeen and btob to be the vocal kings, i just love them a lot.
as for the lyrics of this song... personally i feel like they might be talking about crazy fans (sasaeng fans) that just don't know how to respect personal space and are invading their privacy, basically being overly obsessed with them ... i could be really wrong about this, it's just my personal takeaway from it.
exo does have a storyline but i'm not entirely sure as to what it is because i don't know them that well yet... what i do know is that their storyline starts at their debut song 'mama' and all the members have different superpowers?
also in obsession there are 6 members but that's not actually all of exo... exo currently consists of 9 members and used to consist of 12 members. 3 members officially left the group earlier in their careers and the reason you're not seeing everyone in this particular mv is because of military leave and some special circumstances with lay (one chinese member) that didn't allow him to participate in group activity. it's still complicated.

In Tempo, they were successfully cloned and the people inside the box in Tempo were reject clones. The successful ones are the one dancing and they are clones because they were glitching.
