Today we call it “mythology” or “folklore”, but 1000 years ago all of this was considered religion by a lot of people. And 1000 years from now in the future, what we currently consider religion will most likely be referred to as “mythology” and “folklore” in the exact same way. History doesn’t necessarily repeat itself, but it often rhymes.
The CliffsNotes(tm) version: this is a shaman praying to Odin as his village prepares for war. The first two sections are the actual invocation and prayer. The third section (where the entire group is chanting) is a recitation of every rune. The last section, as verbose as it may be, equates to “so we ask it to be done, amen”. Heilung typically uses this as the first performed piece of their shows, but if one follows the story outlined on the album Ofnir, “Krigsgaldr” explains why they’re going to war in the first place. This is still an excellent introduction to Heilung, simply because it IS the first performed piece in their shows, unless one counts the invocation they recite first: Remember that we all are brothers All people and beasts and trees and stone and wind We all descend from the One Great Being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted
The instrument you asked about is a Ravanahatha from India. I have attended their rituals as they are called twice now, and I could easily go every time. Simply amazing experience.
In an interview Maria said initially she was simply jamming which lead to this amazing voice solo part. They are so talented and skilled it's just great.
You really need to watch this performance start to finish. It is a ritual, and if you want watch uninterrupted, it will do things to you and make you feel all sorts of ways.
I’m sure you’ll like Wardruna also. Raido Lyfjaberg Kvitraven And not to forget Helvegen. Look for the live indoors version with guest singer Aurora. Pure magic. Aurora makes great music too. The seed, official video It all happened quiet, live Ruanaway, official video
I loved your reaction!!! The Ravanahatha that both Jonas & Maria play at the end was something they acquired on a trip to India. Maria also plays it in the song that follows "In Maidjan" in their Ritual called "Alfadhirhaiti" (pronounced "all fath-ear high tee") which translates to "He who is called All-Father". It is a tribute to Odin, his belongings & his many nick names. Highly energetic, yet hypnotic song! ua-cam.com/video/2wy-W-pYlds/v-deo.html

The instrument you asked about is a ravanahatha an ancient Indian bowed, stringed instrument, still in use in parts of India.

I find them so hypnotic. Maybe meditative is a better word? But then, I'm also ready to go to war at the next moment.
The Heilung people also perform as Euzen and Songleikr. Check out the song Ulvetime by Songleikr
well, 2 of the three were in Euzen and songleikr, but close enough.
