  • I've been using the rE from Sun Vision Display for months, and now I've been testing out the Bigme B251 E-Ink Display. These are just a few of the alternative display technologies, which claim to limit eye strain. What do I actually think of them after testing them in the real world. Here's my roundup! Many of them are very expensive, but do any of them justify their price? Here's a comparison of e-ink, RLCD and IPS LCD screens with a focus on productivity in your home office.

We want e-ink or RLCD MONITORS - not a never-ending series of tablets! If users don't have a tablet by now, they're not going to get one. Most of us work on desktops and need a monitor that does not destroy our eyes. Why are manufacturers unable to grasp that more and more people want a MONITOR that is either RLCD or e-ink?! No more eye-strain backlighting! The Sunvision RLCD is the BEST out there, but they don't make a monitor in the 13" form factor that would be portable. Manufacturers, are you listening? STOP it with all the tablets; bring out eye-friendly monitors!

I just want a screen that gives me a balance performance both in daylight and night time, without consuming too much power.

what do you think of using the projector for work purposes? It will be much better than most of these i feel like, they do get nice bright so you use it in the daytime too

I have the Dasung 25 inch color monitor. Does the Bigme has a lot of grain on the faster modes. Also the color it’s not as good as the boox tablet. How does this one compare to the color eink tablets?
    Thanks in advance

I’m looking forward to the radiant. I love eink screens but it’s too slow to use with a mouse. Tablets are fine, but as a monitor for my computer, it does not work for me.

What is it about LCD screens that strains the eyes? and they really do. Yet isn't light, light? if it's being emitted from LCDs, reflected from a front light or just from the sun? There clearly is a difference but what is it? Maybe you could enlighten us on the subject sometime Kit?
Both the Dasung and the Bigme are impressive but for the price, hopefully as manufacturing ramps up as popularity grows, competition will bring down the price.
I had to smile at the audio edit at 5:00, I've made a few videos in my time, and it didn't matter how hard I tried, I could never manage to recreate the same sound when I had to insert an audio correction. 😁

Lols, I was going to put a text correction, but thought I'd just do it with the mic! "Done is better than perfect!"
      Is light just light. Nope!
So I've been editing all morning, in study with blinds drawn. So LED bulbs only, nice warm light ones, blue light filters on the screens. Then I pulled up the blinds and the room is flooded with natural sunlight. I literally felt my eyes relax.
I think that there is something to do with the white light from the sun, being made of a mix of all frequencies, with it's peak in the mid of the visible spectrum. Whereas "white" light from OLED, is really a mix of three frequencies of light, with a massive spike in the blue, high frequency end.
Eye strain comes from two places in my option, one is from focusing on one distance and it is muscular, and the other is from too much high frequency light. We're definitely meant to be outside, enjoying the broad continuous spectrum of the sun.
Thanks, good question. (I enjoyed typing the response on this e-ink monitor.)

@@KitBetts-Masters That explanation makes a lot of sense, maybe one day they'll work out how to build monitors that emit a fuller range of light and give our eyes a rest.

@@karlmunford7000 yeah, thanks! That's what Eazeye are doing, but you still really sacrifice colour accuracy, and no LEDs are quite the same as full spectrum sunlight.

The answer is very easy... even without technical studies, just common sense.
People say our species has been in this planet for 300,000 years... Eyes came to exist in this species just because there was a very specific range of frequencies and properties of the electromagnetic radiation received in this planet that was useful to us. Our species has been very finely tuned to these natural frequencies and properties to the point that it is not only useful, but needed for life in what has been the norm in those 300,000 years; with exposure also being all that time under very specific cycles and patterns (e.g. day and night times).
Imagine now suddenly believing we are such a clever species just because we can try to recreate with artificial and extremely rudimentary methods a very poor substitute of what-exclusively-the species sees as useful (pun intended). By rudimentary, it is meant here in comparison to what nature has been providing even before our species started existing; we simply cannot reach that level of sophistication, even our measuring tools and full understanding of many properties are way too simplistic in comparison.
Eyes, as such finely and symbiotically tuned organs, will inevitably react if they are suddenly cut off the whole spectrum that has been the norm for all those millennia at those very specific patterns, and instead, start getting exposure from an artificial, foreign and rudimentary set of frequencies at also different patterns.
Slightly out of topic by now, I would even venture into saying that those natural frequencies from sunlight that our species understands as being harmful to us, would not be harmful, but needed as well if we were again exposed on a natural way without the interaction of these artificial ones we have created.
One may also recognise that eyes are not an isolated organ in our body and usually, most things are interconnected to most other things. This would also raise many other topics that I shall not discuss on this already lengthy UA-cam comment.
Nevertheless, since "light" is just a narrow band of electromagnetic frequencies, and to open the possibility of further "food for thought" in whoever has reached this point in this comment, I will include a link to a scientific article titled: "DNA is a fractal antenna in electromagnetic fields". Here we could make a parallelism between light/eyes and electromagnetic fields/DNA (both related to the transition from natural frequencies to artificial frequencies and its effect on eyes and even something as "basic" as DNA).

@@rnbdanny Interesting, but I come from a very different position as to our source...

And the Lord _[Yahveh]_ God formed man of the *dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.*
