Mary Lou Williams seemed to be able to switch back and forth between swing and bop effortlessly. I used to think she was about four different people: the big band arranger and songwriter, the swing pianist, the killer boogie pianist, and the top-notch bop pianist. It took me some years to realize that this was all the same person. (She was very attractive when she was young, by the way, and here, although she had put on quite a bit of weight, she’s still very pretty.)
Benny Goodman & Mary Lou Williams with Major Holley doing "Ain't Misbehavin' " (with Cal Collins and Connie Kay) sounds like classical jazz to me... and it's swinging.

Mary Lou Williams is such a legend. And whatever Major Holley is doing to that bass, keep doing it!
Wow, I never knew Benny Goodman and Mary Lou Williams ever played together! Thanks for posting.
In the 1930s she did quite a bit of arranging for Goodman, the most famous examples being "Roll 'em" and "Camel Hop".
She played with him at his 40th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall. They played her composition Roll 'Em! Brought down the house!

The Queen of pianists
I think Mary Lou Williams arranged for Goodman, and everyone else, back in the day. This great to hear and see. Thanks!
BluesJay Listen to Benny,s band play Mary Lou,s Roll Em.
Wow...what an ensemble! while not as celebrated as his bandmates, Cal Collins was a terrific guitar player..
the class and finesse here is superb
This is really devine!
Can't like this enough. Thanks for posting.
Can anyone explain what he's doing to the bass? I don't think I've ever heard it sound like that before.

He is singing along with his solo, an octave above the bass. Slam Stewart was famous for this type of solo.
He’s slappin’ that bass
He is singing with his bass

my guess would be the mike douglas show, the big flowers in the background

From a mad keen 76yo Aussie fan.
Great MLW!!!
Only a musician as great as Benny Goodman could play Fats Waller's great hit and not have people disappointed that it's not Fats playing.
Don't forget Armstrong, who virtually introduced the song in 1929.
Yeah!
Wonderful ensemble. Wonderful music. Mary Lou was amazing as always
hello Mary Lou
Does anyone know where this was recorded? It looks like a TV set, but I have no idea what show.
