The reference to the lamp not casting a shadow is again from the Skanda Purana. Bhupalam :- Janyam of 8th Mela Todi Arohanam: S R1 G2 P D1 S Avarohanam: S D1 P G2 R1 S This morning melody is a janya of Todi. Most of us have heard the usual comment from our mothers " Enna unakku Bhoopalam paadi Thiriupalli ezhuchi pannanumo? ". The general custom in our temples is to sing or play this ragam in Nadaswaram when the doors of the sanctum sanctorum are opened. It is also called Bhupalam. In Ancient Tamil Isai, this is known as Puranirmai Pann and there are number of Thevarams set in this ragam. Reva Gupti is the ragam closest to Bhoopalam in our music. At times, even Bhauli ( Bowli ) also sounds similar. The Hindustani raga close to this ragam is Bhupal Todi.
