It is a great poem, you did not mention that Tolkien gifted the poem and the copyright to his friend and one-time secretary, Margaret Joy Hill, who was also Rayner Unwin's secretary at Tolkien's publisher, George Allen & Unwin. The poem was originally published as a poster by GA&U and Houghton Mifflin in the US. It was also read by John Le Mesurier for the BBC Radio Series The Lord of the Rings.
It has also been set to music by Donald Swann, whom Joy Hill gave it to shortly after Tolkien's death. It was included in the second edition of the song cycle "The Road Goes Ever On" (the other songs were written and published while Tolkien was still alive, and were approved by him; "Namárie" was based on his own chant that you can also find on UA-cam). I was thrilled when I found that book in a second-hand bookshop in the 1980s when I was a teenager. It's a great book not only for the music, but also for the notes and translations by Tolkien, including beautiful calligraphy.
Dude I wish you had slightly longer videos like Lotr lore ones, your voice, chill style and music relax the living crap outta me and inspire me to become a better reader haha greetings from Greece!
I never knew about this book. Well, I do now and I thank you for posting this very important video. Always excited to add another book by the professor to my library! Thank you James.
I believe there is a recording of this poem being sung in an elvish cadence floating around out there as well, sung by stephen oliver i believe. I came across it once, and it almost brought me to tears listening to both the words and the music as well, highly recommended while reading this poem!
I didn't know there was a community of people who are dedicated to collecting LOTR books of all kinds until UA-cam started showing me videos like these ones.
You are the reason I got motivated to read beyond the Hobbit and right now am reading through The Silmarillion… thank you James.. unfortunately am yet to read Bilbo’s last song..
I always loved the poem itself, the lord of the rings is my favorite book of all time and I almost cried when I finished it. People don't often (if ever) talk about this book so I'm glad you did! Thanks for your content!
I love your content, I bought the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Illustrated set and Im currently listening and following along with the Andy Serkis The Fellowship of the Ring Audiobook. Thinking about it you can make a video on which audiobook versions are the best! Its my first time reading Tolkiens work and I already bought all the books I need!
Hey there recently found your channel I'm 16 and i really want to buy a good hobbit+lotr book set for reading (and collection but reading is the main purpose) but I'm not sure which one I should get I prefer a hardcover and illustration would be nice too what set would you recommend?
Exciting times! It's always a wonderful moment when you're embarking on your first-time reads. I'd suggest you go for a nice, cheap paperback set for both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They're much more convenient to read and have the same content as any other fancy hardback of deluxe edition. After reading them, you can then consider looking beyond to other editions :) Enjoy!
It should be quite easy to find. There’s a more recent edition out now, also with illustrations by Pauline Baynes but the cover is white rather than blue 👍
That ist The question i have too...i really Love to Listen to him becourse i am from Germany and My english ist not so very good...but listening to him is so easy to undrstand...really Love His voice
Hi ya, do you also read from self-published authors? I have wrote a survival horror that i would love to send you. I would be interested hear your feedback on it. Thank you Kind regards, Karl.

Lovely! And Donald Swann had composed a piece of music to accompany it as well 👍

Thanks for reminding me about this book. I briefly read it last year, but I want to get a nicer edition at some point
You’re welcome 🙂
There's a new edition of the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien which is revised and expanded, what do you think of it?
It is something I’m certainly interested in given the substantial amount of new letters included (150) 🙃

@@brewingbooks I’ll be on the lookout! 👍🏼
Can I read it if my native language is not English?
I’m sure there are translations, but the English in the original is quite straightforward in the poem so it should be an easy enough task 🙂
@@brewingbooks thank you ,I'll read it 🙏🏻
What country are you from? I can’t pinpoint your accent.
