as a mama who has lost a baby to sids, I highly disagree with many of the sleep related suggestions. I am admittedly a little overprotective but if you were in my shoes you'd understand. New moms should definitely do their research before using products such as weighted sleep sacks, swaddles for that long, the snuggle me for sleeping, and co-sleeping. THAT SAID All the other advice here is great. I still love the videos and will be back for more.

Yes! Even HeySleepyBaby and happycosleepy both say the snuggle me is not safe for sleep and not to swaddle if co-sleeping (and following the safe sleep 7)

I am so sorry for your loss. I strongly hope that all mommy influencers are aware of their influence on (new) parents and take responsibility accordingly. (For example: Over 1 in 3 parents have bought a baby sleep product they’ve seen on social media that goes against safer sleep advice, a survey by The Lullaby Trust finds. )

Secondly, I agree with you very much, there are products that I've heard her recommend that are totally not safe for sleep... Safe sleep practices include no swaddles after baby is able to roll over on their own and no blankets or items in the crib until after age 1. A mobile baby in a half swaddle can easily come out of the swaddle and be at risk of asphyxia if an adult doesn’t notice. Sleep sacks are a safer alternative for this interval.

Im currently 36 weeks pregnant & I just laugh at some of these overpriced baby products. I feel like companies really try to take advantage of families at this time , telling them they need stuff that they really don’t.

The companies make products but people fall for them lol. I think get what makes sense for you, for some, like me, my tastes don’t change much so getting the bookbag or a wrap/carrier that’ll last, even if a bit expensive, would be better than changing one with each kid. But it’s also hard to understand what your kid would like once they’re out in the world so I guess do your research and do what’s best for you and your family. Just bc influencers tell you to get something doesn’t mean you should. It’s our job to not be so easily influenced

It's great to see what works for different families. It does bear mentioning though that at minimum, all you need for a baby is somewhere for them to sleep, something for them to wear, some way to transport them, some way to clean/change them, and some way to feed them. Babies needn't be expensive, we got almost everything we use secondhand, and we don't use a lot of the 'must-have' items.
The ones that have been game-changing for us are double stroller (secondhand) and portable changing mat. The double stroller came with a bassinet option, which we use for downstairs naps. For nights, we have a secondhand next-to-me crib and replaced the mattress. Our cloth nappies are secondhand. Secondhand carrier and bouncer also get a lot of use. We do use sleep sacks as both kids wriggled out of muslin swaddles after about 6 weeks old. I just use my pre-baby backpack as a nappy bag, no need for a special one.

  • @MyBeautifulChaos620
    @MyBeautifulChaos620 7 місяців тому +7

While the SnuggleMe is nice to set baby in while you’re watching them, it is NOT safe for night time sleep. Parents please do not put ANYTHING extra in the crib/bassinet with your baby especially something padded. Also, if you choose to co sleep, please do not swaddle and follow the 7 steps to safe sleep.
My advice as a mom of 4. Invest in your car seats, strollers, and baby mattress.
Things I used with all 4 of my children:
    1. Mamaroo
    2. Burp cloths
    3. Binky
    4. Playmat
    5. Swaddle blankets or halo swaddle sleepsack until they can roll and then a sleepsack after. AAP recommends no loose blankets until age 1.
    6. Sound machine (hatch rest+ is what I recommend because if power goes out it lasts for 12 hours)

I was introduced to them while working at a daycare. Finances made us consider them when expecting our first and now we’re on our third. We only do the all in ones with the snaps, but they’re so much more cost efficient than disposable.

Weighted sleep sacks are thankfully no longer recommended for safe sleep. I never understood why I would put a WEIGHT on my little baby's delicate chest. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure even the AAP has updated their guidelines to say not to use weighted sleep sacks. Also the snuggle me, a suffocation risk that's easily avoided.

i'm in Canada as well and my second born, daughter, sleeps in the snuggleme (for now) just like my son did for a little bit. they can't roll over or move to their side at all. my babies love(d) the snuggleme until they became more mobile & would roll over to either their tummy to sleep or side. we also just started using sleepsacks for her but absolutely not weighted ones. i actually never heard of weighted ones until just now aside from the nested bean ones if that were to even count as a weighted sleepsack, i feel as though baby would struggle to move or if they're on their backs, struggle to breathe properly as well

It is crazy how must haves can differ because for me sleep sacks and the tub insert are 100% must haves! The sleep sacks are so cozy and don’t fall off (I keep the house a little chilly at night). We use them until our babies are toddlers! Also I just can’t shower holding a baby, for me it feels like holding a big bar of soap- they are so slippery! We love our baby tub!

I agree! We still use sleep sacks with my two year old. So much easier than a blanket that falls off! I also love the tub insert. I don’t always want to have a bath/ shower with my baby and laying them on the tub floor would be so tricky! I think it would really hurt my back bending down that far! Different things work for different people though!

I personally do love sleep sacks, but more so for winter time with older babies and toddlers. (Like 9 months or older). My kids kick off their blankets and get cold and our apartment isn’t insulated enough for the harsh winters we get. It’s peace of mind more than anything for me.
I do love Halo’s fleece sleep sack swaddle though. My son loved being swaddle, my daughter hated it, and I used it a lot with both of the. That being said, I would never have purchased it new myself. It’s sooo expensive. My hospital actually gave it to me (they handed me a brand new one in its package to take home, so don’t worry, I didn’t steal it).

  • @Dugg124
    @Dugg124 7 місяців тому +31

I really enjoy your videos and your perspective and thank you for this video! But, i think you need a disclaimer that this is your personal opinion and that parents need to do their own research (I know this should be very obvious) but A LOT of your sleep preferences are actually considered dangerous and advised AGAINST. Fortunately you haven't had any issues (I assume), but there is definite risks for others who may blindly follow your 'advice'. For example, baby shouldn't sleep in the Snuggle Me (even the manufacture states it is unsafe for sleep), weighted blankets/sleep sacks are not recommended as they can cause breathing difficulties in some babies (linked to increase risk of SIDS), co-sleeping can be safe, but a lot of precautions need to be taken to ensure it remains safe or else it can easily become very dangerous for baby. A loose swaddle can potentially be harmful a) baby rolls and is unable to use the assistance of their legs to help roll back, b) swaddle comes loose and become a smothering risk. Absolutely nothing wrong with doing what works for your baby/family, but I caution people to PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH before deciding what potential risks you are comfortable taking!

I agree with many of these! I do think the Diaper Genie is a bit outdated, but I also think a diaper specific container of some sort is entirelyyyyy necessary. The Ubbi is amazing because you can use literally any bag you have in your home (we use regular garbage bags) and it traps the odor inside the can. Even taking the trash out daily does not keep the diapers from being super stinky, so that would be my only addition! :)

    • @hannahfoster7941
      @hannahfoster7941 7 місяців тому

In my experience working as a nanny (before I had kids) I found that even the Ubbi releases a nasty smell into the room every time you open it. The smell of diapers that have been sitting for days like that is way worse than diapers in an open garbage that’s taken out daily in my opinion! Oh and also taking out a garbage bag full of week old diapers is smelly enough to fumigate the whole house. 🤢

I thought a bassinet was going to be a MUST but my son would NOT lay in it. He would just cry and cry and cry. Then we'd start crying. He would only sleep in the bed next to us. Sleep sacks were an absolute must because it's so cold where we live and I couldn't put a blanket on him. I would layer him up and then put the sleep sack on last so he'd be toasty warm. Our woodstove keeps the rest of the house warm but I was paranoid about our cats so I'd keep our door shut.

    - a crib (haven’t used it except for as storage😂)

    - HER STROLLER (don’t get me wrong I’ve used it, but rarely, she rather be held and it’s big and a hassle to get out)
    - lotion, eczema stuff, cradle cap stuff, gas relief drops, etc (breast milk works great for a lot of stuff)

    - organic nipple butter (emphasis on organic, you don’t even have to wipe it off before feeding!)

I'm team playpen/pack n play (with infant level to bring the mattress up higher) as a bedside sleep space; I have big babies and they would happily outgrow a bassinet by 6 weeks old, so the playpen lasts longer and is more versatile for us. The Kushies Bamboo Easy Nursing Pillow is a highly underrated nursing pillow option, especially for those of us that can really only breastfeed using the football hold (and bonus is that it's so small I literally take it everywhere with me for breastfeeding on the go). Portable sound machine, more than one carrier option, and Keekaroo change pad are my other must-have items.

I only have one child, so I love hearing about what works for every different babies and Mommas. I thought I would be a co-sleeping bassinet kind of Mama but my baby wanted nothing to do with it, lol! I remember about two weeks in, I tried putting him down for a nap in his crib in his room, and he did so well and I felt so much more relaxed. The bassinet quickly became a laundry magnet so I got rid of ASAP! We swaddled when he was newborn and then moved to sleep sacks, which were expensive but we found them used. He slept so well in them. We loved the Baby Shoosher too, almost no one mentions that and it was one of our must haves. I loved wearing my baby and miss that so bad. I love sleep sacks, I have many kinds for different seasons etc. We don't have boilers and central heating systems in Australia so having winter sleep sacks is soo good. My Kidd would never take dummies and I never swaddled them 😂 goes to show how different it is for everyone!

Watching your videos has changed my entire approach to adulthood. As a young adult, being brought up in the generation of anti-traditional roles, anti-religion and women being overlooked unless they want a career, you have been the mother I never had to show me 'the way'. Thanks to your videos, my marriage thrives so much more, and we feel happier than ever in our more traditional roles with me as a homemaker and SAHM. Every video shows me more and more what I want my family unit to look like and, most of all, FEEL like. Thank you so very much

I love how every mama can be so different. Must haves for me newborn and continued to my 6M old: 1. swaddle sleep sacks (they have Velcro) I have a wiggly baby and regular swaddles didn’t work and also gave me anxiety. 2. Diaper genie, I don’t take out my trash every day and I feel like it keeps the smell in really well and is worth the money. 3. Glass bottles avent brand, I ended up having to formula feed and these bottles are so
I nice for warming and staying warm. Also I just don’t like using plastic for food if I can help it so I really like that my baby is fed out of glass. 4. Badger Brand diaper rash cream. Seriously works like magic to ease a burnt rashie bottom. Clears it up within 24 hrs typically.

We use swaddles for the first few weeks and then use sleep sacks because blankets and loose bedding are a bigger risk of SIDS. I prefer to have a play pen to put baby down out of reach of older siblings if I can't watch them closely because I have heard that baby swings are not as good in terms of development.
I have never used baby lotions, soap or shampoo, just water works fine. Even my older kids (4, 2) have almost never been washed with soap.

Great list, especially for any first time Mom’s trying to figure out where to start. We’re about to have baby #3, and I would agree with everything on here, especially couldn’t live without the snuggle me, a bouncer, and the burp cloths. I end up using the burp cloths for sooo much more than I realized I would use them, even just use one in my nursing bra in the first few weeks when milk is still regulating, especially at nighttime.

It is very interesting how different babies have different needs. One of my babies loved his pacifier for instance while my other two would spit it out and were uninterested. The pacifier user became a crazy thumb sucker and is paying for it with his braces, but oh well. We did our best.
I agree with baby wraps. I didn't use one for only my first but could truly have used it. Baby wraps were hard to find then (16 years ago). I had a double stroller for my first two being close to age but I couldn't stand it!!! It was so needed though. It was just bulky. I have never used a booger picker but already realize it is needed. I do have the snot sucker and it is my first time using one and it is helpful. My firstborn was the only one who liked being swaddled. This one likes a sleep sack but we never had them before. He likes warmth. I also am not a purse person but use backpack diaper bags.
Burp clothes really are vital. I'm so with you.
I had a horrrrrrible nursing cover with my first, but nice ones for my second and third.
This is my first time NOT having a swing, but my first two loved them. I probably should have bought one, but we're surviving.
I've never heard of a peanut changer.
I used a mini co-sleeper for my first two and a bassinet for this one and we do partial co-sleeping in bed too.
I agree about diaper genie completely.
A must have for older moms to help our aging backs is to have standing changing tables. I have a nice tall one that is a miracle worker. I used to just change my babies on the bed or floor but this has helped me as I'll be 40 next week.
I think some people go overboard with the amount of things they get for babies. You have a practical and good list!! I love it. Mine is pretty basic too.

I never swaddled my babies, sleeping sacks and then sleeping bags with feet are what worked very well for us. We got a diaper genie for our first, but I agree it was a waste of money. Normal diapers went to our kitchen bin. Poo diapers directly in the big one outside. I used the tub insert for both kids, both the one for infants and then the one for babies who can sit, I found them very useful. Used a wrap for both babies, sling and carrier for the first one, the second loved the carrycoat that we used as a bassinet for the naps. I bought a next to me crib, but both kids preferred to co-sleep with me. I got a cot for free but also that didn't work. I guess our bed is cosier 😂

Just wanted to remind mamas who may be discouraged by brand name recommendations that aren’t affordable for most families. There are amazon equivalents that are less than half the price and work just the same. The quality I would say is equally dependable as well. So don’t see “must have products” and panic like your baby won’t have nice things do research and find affordable equivalents that are just as nice. Also every changing pad even the cheapest ones have wipable waterproof surfaces that you can cover or not or just use a disposable pad like a puppy pad for easy cleaning and less laundering. Not sure why it seems to be such a struggle for baby product reviewers to find solutions 😂

If you're struggling with finances or not, I think currently we all are. Have a think about making up a list of wants and must haves. If you have a family member living nearby such as a your own mom, sister or best friend, sit down with that person and leave the lists with her. Or even leave a list at a baby store that families usually buy from.
Let that person be the go-between with Family and close friends, letting them know what you're needs and wants are. I would suggest new mom's to-be, waiting until your second trimester. Maybe they want to give you a birthday, Christmas, a Baby Shower or newborn baby gift but money is tight. One year of getting something practical for a mom or even a dad to-be, can be a blessing. Don't be proud being a first time mama, let your family and friends help you, including buying 2nd hand-baby items. Including from your family and friends
Our middle niece when she was having her first baby, from the moment I first heard and until mom and newborn came home, I spent the time knitting and crocheting. I ended up filling a suitcase full of baby clothes for baby's first year of life that were season appropriate. Some commercial items were also included. Mom and Dad found it such a help not needing to spend money on baby clothes. All the very best for the remainder of your pregnancy and a safe arrival of your baby.

Things none of my babies ever used:
    Bottles

When asked by FTM for must haves I say:
Car seat (I used to say convertible ones until baby 3 but the infant one is definitely a must sadly if you only have one baby splurge and get the like travel set that’s the car seat & stroller combo, I don’t have it but if recommend the same one mentioned in the video Uppa Baby Vista or the Evenflo Pivot Xpand)
Diapers of some kind, I’ve used both cloth & disposables, it honestly depends on the kid. My oldest I clothed when she was older and mobile, my middle child was clothed from the day he came home from the hospital until he became mobile and my most recently has only worn cloth a handful of times she has a wetness sensitivity and nothing I do helps except disposables and even with them she can only wear 4 specific brands or she gets a huge rash
Zipper footie pjs!! Just buy a handful in a few sizes and that’s all they need in the early months
      Lastly BOOBS 😂
I’d add a baby carrier in there but that’s major trial and error finding what your baby likes I’ve tried them all. First loved ring slings then buckle carrier until she was 3. My middle loved wraps then buckle carrier until he was 3. My youngest hates me worn no matter what carrier it is. But she loves being held and carried but don’t I dare try to put her in a carrier 😅

Also, watching two week wait videos by other mamas kinda gave me something to do and I enjoyed seeing everyone else’s experience but this may add even more anxiety or stress for some during the two week wait depending on them.
