  • Gear box oil change on a 2006 BMW R 1200 GS as stated in the film the oil does not need changing that regularly but I don’t know exactly what type of oil is lubricating the transmission and how old it is, but I do now!

    Hi.Bike on center stand is a messy affair.Avoided that by leaving bike on side stand,with leveling bike up to get all the oil out.After that bike must be back on center stand to fill up the oil to correct level.

      Hi @fernandlarosche1213, thank you for making a sensible and useful comment, some viewers get a bit upset by what I say about the human race just dying out at the end of the film. I have the next GS model up now, the R1200 GS LC, which as you probably know has the engine and gearbox oil combined. Regards John from Sunny Devon UK

    What's the recommended mileage or duration to change this oil?

      Hi mahsikb, thanks for commenting, please bear in mind that I am only an amateur, the Haynes manual says the gearbox oil should be changed every 24,000 miles or every 2 years, whichever is sooner.
      I think it is such a high mileage or time because unlike the engine oil the gearbox oil it is not subject to the high temperature and contaminants from combustion.
      Interestingly Haynes also says that the final drive oil is only changed once after the first 600 mile but the owner may wish to change the oil again during the life of the machine.

      Interesting to know. Was curious as the service intervals I find online didn't mention. Anw love the videos. Don't care if others think it's bad. It's better than not finding any at all. Your videos are informative

    Genius run off idea with the ice cream container cut off!

      Thanks for commenting, the run off idea wasn't rocket science but I thought I would share it, safe riding John from sunny Devon UK

    Love your comment about humanity should become extinct! In times of the pandemic this has even more meaning. And thanks for the vido anyway ... ;-)

      Thanks for commenting, I didn't make it up there are people that think that way, I try to keep faith in humanity and hope we will sort things out and our culture will last for a long long time.

    Disagree. Without humans there would be no ice cream. Lets not chicken and egg gearbox maintenance.

      Hi sharo, in the film I did not say I agreed with the concept I was reporting what I had heard, it is a fact that my oil and your ice cream do have an impact on the environment, I quite like being alive and do appreciate human culture and such things as ice cream but there is no doubt that we humans have caused a great deal of damage to planet Earth, we are on the same side, have fun and be safe, regards John from sunny Devon uk

    Thanks for the video, did you changed the oil at operating temperature? Or is that not necessary? Regards Martin from Holland

    • @JohnPatrick58
      @JohnPatrick58  5 років тому

      Hi Martin, yes the engine was at operating temperature, I'm only an armature mechanic but my feeling is that if the oil is hot more of the impurities will be mixed in and more of the old oil will drain out, thanks for commenting, John from sunny Devon UK.

      Excuse me, but you used 75W-90 EP GL-5 semi-synthetic oil, right?, and for the rear diferential too, right?. Thanks🤝.
