Rappers already know how the industry works nowadays. But sometimes when you're unable to invest in your music career and feel upset that's when you just accept whatever just to make it and be under a major label.
Labels have connections, and the thing is, people put too much emphasis on money lost instead of money gained. Yes, lets say in your career you make 15 million but only saw 5 of it, you still made 5 million dollars within a few years. Yes its not crazy money, but its enough to invest and grow yourself from that point onward. People get angry at what they lost instead of what they have, its the definition of ungrateful. Facts are, most artist are signed to labels, ALL big artist are, its because the labels have that connection to get you a ft, they have BEATS that are sampled and produced really well, they have engineers and producers on standby. Not to mention, these labels know how to help you, because they have created famous artist. Its easy for them, they have social media on lock, networking on lock, ft's on lock, they have all the data. They can point you into the right direction and shoot you there. Plus, they intentionally handicap independent artist, good luck getting a ft without being signed, especially a cheap one. As an independent artist, you are facing the world alone. These companies have DECADES of experience. When you're alone, you have to figure out everything ON your own. Its like being a poor person with a business idea and trying to get rich, where do you start? It might take you awhile to figure out VS if a rich person just told you, and that's basically labels. It takes money to make money, and the labels have the money. As a final point, I just think some people don't care, and actually, its business smart. Most people with small businesses go to investors to get funding, and in that, they trade away ownership and other rights. Even large copies go public and trade away their ownership in stocks. A decent portion of large companies today aren't even profitable. Netflix, Amazon, Uber, etc. The only way they're making money is by hoping YOU put stock into their potential. The investor is hoping you turn a profit one day, and you, as the owner, are hoping to accomplish something you never could have without the investors, and then you look and see Jeff bezos is the richest man in the world. Clearly that's not a bad tactic. In that same hand, Youngboy signed for 2 million, GOT a decent check in the process, and now, he's worth WAY more and is a massive artist, so NOW, if he gets out of his label, he could be making millions within the next 2-3 years if he does it right. So technically, the investment to the investors paid off, and he also paid off on taking a chance. Who is to say youngboy wouldn't be where he is today without their guidance, producers, beats, etc? These labels are paying to take a chance on you, so as a rapper, why not just use their money and see how far you can go. If you pop off, great, you can become a millionaire, which is PROBABLY better then where you were before, and if you fail, oh well, you probably still made some decent money, got to figure out if you were star potential, and you didn't waste tons of money or spend years trying to build something that wouldn't work out. I think signing is a good thing personally, but anyways, this comment is WAY to long, so yeah, just my opinions.

I feel like a lot of these rappers come from backgrounds where there might not be a lot of money. And so when they get this opportunity, you're thinking big jump from the hood to the mountaintop. The record label uses emotional tactics, boosting the ego and selling a them with the millions, because they hope their ROI is even greater. Then when the rapper finally realizes their values, they are stuck because at the end of the day it's business and these record labels are just trying to make money like you are. I do think record labels can be beneficial because of their large network but you also got to be smart and realize you bring value too as an artist. Business is a dirty game.

If they offer you 10k, they know your worth is way more. If you’re consistent & always putting in 100% effort you’ll get there. BE WILLING TO DO STUFF OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. NOTHING PUSHES YOU TO SUCCESS WITHOUT BEING UNCOMFORTABLY PUSHED BY YOURSELF TOWARDS YOUR GOAL
yea you damn right cause these labels are demons who are sucking all the money they can from you look at pop smoke and juice wrld sadly the labels still own their music and they are trying to make every single pennie they can from them and if someone tries to get out of that label im pretty sure they would have something to do with killing them. Dirty game💯
'Some of the young ones just don't have a vision for their career' I think this is mostly because the label part of the game hasn't been explored as much in the public eye, most people see an artist and right away thing it's their own but some don't even know how it goes with labels. I think this should be more discussed
Preciate the info fam, this independent journey has def been filled with ups and downs, but now everything is beautifully coming together, I’m now happy to wake up in the morning everyday
Let's be honest it's not so straight forward. You're young, broke and from the streets. You drop a couple of songs and are offered $2 mil and a backing to put you on. In retrospect it looks like nothing because youngboy was so successful but in the moment it's a risk for both sides.
Exactly, & not every artist who's signed becomes a success. Any broke artist will accept $2mil, but the key is to negotiate & get the best deal possible. My advice (& I'm a corporate attorney) is to insist the label pay for an attorney to represent you the artist, & give you a list of 3 options. Interview those 3 attorneys, choose 1 you like, & remind him/her that legal ethics requires your attorney to act in your best interest, & you'll keep working with the attorney if he/she can get you a good deal. A good attorney is the best friend an artist can have early on
Scarlet ur right but a lot of times especially if it’s a labels attorney their job is to help the label so they can still easily screw u Over and u not going to know shit cause u don’t know how to negotiate and read all the clauses, terms in the papers👁
“Rapper or not you can never get your youth back...period ” that’s why I like watching your videos. You give good advice to these aspiring artists and even advice us “average” people. That hit me deep. Love the content bro.
Yooo Blackyspeakz am an upcoming rapper in Africa been a huge fun of your content really change and encourage independent mind set thank you man keep dropping you a big inspiration
Bro.. Business runs on risk.. No risk no reward.. howeverThere is less risk of lost in a record label business Because they have multiple artists and risks management.
Johnny pierre Negotiation Is Futile When The Label Already OWNS You Lol.. Like Why Would They Give You The Key To Freedom When They’re Profiting Off Of Your Name So Easily?
The main issue here as with most contracts is the uneven bargaining power. What these artists need to try and do is to negotiate as much as they can with the label to their advantage instead of just accepting an agreement that benefits the label more. If you think about it if a label wants you they will do whatever they can to sign you because other labels will specially if you are popular on social media. Basically they need to believe in their sauce heavyyyy.
he is he's prolly one of the most underrated artist in the game he can rap and sing and produce beats and write all on his own and the song gon be fire yu jus not hip if yu say sum bout his height he's 5'7'' not 5'3'' but it's funny tho ngl but he's too talented so errybody talking about it only helpin him more wit clout his music is jus too good bruh if you've listened to all of it you'd kno
Labels are businesses too. They can help you put out music, grow and realize ideas. If you go in the meetings lawyered up and with a clear idea with the terms you'd want - you'll be fine signing with a label. If you're not serious and didn't do your due diligence ofcourse you're going to get the shorter end of the deal. That's on the rappers only.
Hope they won't kill him before he gets all his masters😐 I feel like these labels kill their artists so that they never get their masters. Industry is evil. Yu're worth dead than alive. That's i decided i won't buy any artist's song or album when he is dead coz most of the money goes to the label.
yea i was rey say i don’t got a lot of money but my brain telling me that 2 mill for 5 albums not really a good deal… 5 albums may take 5 years to make so u got 2 mill for five years which u going have to pay back and prolly end up in debt? don’t make sense to me

I feel better after hearing this. I have been making beats, writing songs and practicing my rap craft since early this year, but have been uncertain because a friend of mines wanted me to join his label but I wanted to be independent so at the time I wad feeling uncertain until now. Thanks BlackySpeakz. I appreciate you and your videos. Can't wait for more to come.
It’s mad sad how labels will take so much especially these rappers be puttin in so much work to only get a fraction of what they making
I don’t like Russ cause of his arrogance but damn he speaking facts.
Watch some of his interviews bro, hes just confident but hes a cool dude. He may be cocky but when did that ever hurt anyone

I'm honestly surprised at how popular young boy has gotten, no shade I just genuinely never thought he'd be at this level and tbh I don't even think he's hit his peak yet

I was recently offered a 10 thousand dollar deal and I was salivating at the mouth... idk what I’d do if I was offered 2 million. Hopefully I stay strong

10k for ???
If they offer you 10k, they know your worth is way more. If you’re consistent & always putting in 100% effort you’ll get there. BE WILLING TO DO STUFF OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. NOTHING PUSHES YOU TO SUCCESS WITHOUT BEING UNCOMFORTABLY PUSHED BY YOURSELF TOWARDS YOUR GOAL

Them people be dying if they do get they masters that's what happen to prince
yea you damn right cause these labels are demons who are sucking all the money they can from you look at pop smoke and juice wrld sadly the labels still own their music and they are trying to make every single pennie they can from them and if someone tries to get out of that label im pretty sure they would have something to do with killing them. Dirty game💯
4ktshad Slime or blackballing or public humiliation or put them In jail either way it goes they can fuck ur career up if u go against the grain
If they looked at it as a loan instead of a “deal” I think these rappers would see it differently.
In this age of the internet, you don't really need to sign to a label anyways
Label signing so 90s & 2000s
Well, Russ ain’t lying.
LMAO I thought YoungBoy was going for his Master's Degree and finally waking up
😭😭😭😭
I thought the same thing at 1st lol
This comment is asleep.

Me too I had too read comments 💀💀💀
No Label or Label whatever works for you. I love seeing NEW GOOD artists come up! Keep Grinding. #SomebodyGoneFeelIt🗣✨
Master P was always talking about this, know your worth.
'Some of the young ones just don't have a vision for their career' I think this is mostly because the label part of the game hasn't been explored as much in the public eye, most people see an artist and right away thing it's their own but some don't even know how it goes with labels. I think this should be more discussed
Young ma is living the high life
Thanks for helping us understand the rap game Mr.Speakz. Much applause💯💯💯
never broke again is what ive been telling myself so i dont go backwards
Imagine how mad you would be if you turned down a deal then never blew up....
This puts a biggg smile on my face. Independent for everrr!!😼
A good attorney is the best friend an artist can have early on
Scarlet thanks
Scarlet ur right but a lot of times especially if it’s a labels attorney their job is to help the label so they can still easily screw u Over and u not going to know shit cause u don’t know how to negotiate and read all the clauses, terms in the papers👁
“Rapper or not you can never get your youth back...period ” that’s why I like watching your videos. You give good advice to these aspiring artists and even advice us “average” people. That hit me deep. Love the content bro.
i thought of ksi and trippie when i saw the thumbnail text
why don’t you just tell it how it is and really tell the truth about what goes behind the scenes with these labels & the industry?
Thank god they are listening

Yooo Blackyspeakz am an upcoming rapper in Africa been a huge fun of your content really change and encourage independent mind set thank you man keep dropping you a big inspiration
They pay you 2 million, but nobody has a magic ball that tells them that the artist is going to be successful, does anyone see this?
Hindsight is always 2020. And sometimes the only why they are relevant is because of the labels backing
The way to go honesty is to use the label until you gain enough success to re claim your masters and publishing
Bro.. Business runs on risk.. No risk no reward.. howeverThere is less risk of lost in a record label business Because they have multiple artists and risks management.
Tazz Tazz that’s true but at least get to a point we’re you can negotiate a better percentage at least
Johnny pierre Negotiation Is Futile When The Label Already OWNS You Lol.. Like Why Would They Give You The Key To Freedom When They’re Profiting Off Of Your Name So Easily?
They must’ve been tired. Glad they got a good nap
Can’t see them yet but I already know half the comments would be “first”
Great vid bro your content is certified essential for the rap industry right now. Keep going! 🔥🔥
Dax is an example of a small, independent rapper who made it.
“Tory Lanez is ready to dominate the game” *yeeeah, about that..*
he is he's prolly one of the most underrated artist in the game he can rap and sing and produce beats and write all on his own and the song gon be fire yu jus not hip if yu say sum bout his height he's 5'7'' not 5'3'' but it's funny tho ngl but he's too talented so errybody talking about it only helpin him more wit clout his music is jus too good bruh if you've listened to all of it you'd kno
Will Pascual I think he was talking abt Meg Thee Stallion

Man shout out to blackeyspeakz these videos be nothing but facts & 🔥
Full 360 that's how the game started back to basics. Independent artists drove the growth of rap. More power.
Solid video. Thanks for all the info. You are appreciated. God bless & stay safe everybody.
I'm a simple guy. When I see BlackySpeakz upload, I click
You know what that’s super smart Imma tag a lot of rappers and tell them to listen to it
Facts Blacky ...THANK YOU !!!!
The industry hasn't changed in a loooong time, 2mil for 5 albums sounds like some late 80's deal.
yea i was rey say i don’t got a lot of money but my brain telling me that 2 mill for 5 albums not really a good deal… 5 albums may take 5 years to make so u got 2 mill for five years which u going have to pay back and prolly end up in debt? don’t make sense to me
Independent artists are winning
“...puts a smile to my non existent face”

Blacky has to be one of the most underrated youtubers ever most youtubers just criticize the music but this dude opens your eyes on certain shit you never have even thought about gives u life tips and even introduces you to some new artists this is what a youtuber should be like instead of the boring ass science teacher vibes most other people have where it feels like they are teaching a class more than taking it easy and enjoying what you do
as a artist , over the years blacky really helped me stay on the right path appreciate it bro 🖤
you dont actually have to sign to blow up. for example, there is this independant New York rapper named Ron Suno that is blowing up right now with his new project Swag Like Mike

I wish they were waking up to, how there music is negatively effecting the black community
