I watched that Netflix documentary, and the study results were simple: People who ate a balanced diet and exercized more, became healthier. Vegan or not. Shocking.
There was also a bunch of filler about how environmentally damaging industrial-scale farming is, but we already knew that too.

Because James delivers facts, and that doesn't go over well people that need to be in a cult, or those looking for a quick fix that doesn't require much effort or thought. He also speaks of simple truths, such as eat less (calories), move more. That's really off-putting to people that NEED this to be complicated and difficult, (the "calories are impossible to calculate," and the "but my HoRmOoOoNeZz won't let me" crowds), so they have an excuse for not losing weight.
Weird and sensational get clicks, facts and truth, not so many. Except for cats, they get clicks no matter what. If James wants to get millions of subs, he's gonna have to get some kittens in his videos.

I want to thank you, James! In the past I've always been fixated on the goal of becoming big and shredded at the same time. Your other video made me realize that it's probably way more healthy and realistic to find my personal sweet spot between looking great and feeling great. Since then my whole attitude towards food and working out changed dramatically and I found new joy in the process. I am no longer trying to achieve this perfect look but rather something that feels right. I am sure once I reached this spot it will be way more attractive than the ultra shredded look I was aiming for - because I'll be happier like this than otherwise. And yes, I am trying to look good for other people as well (as is everybody else). But my focus has shifted on feeling better and becoming more capable. Thank you for your inspiration for that! Please keep spreading this message of common sense, being human and enjoying life. It's a much needed antidote to a hyper-optimized society.

The amount of people I have talked to about calories and how to manage/loose weight and they are surprised when I show them how easy it is. And they don't have to starve themselves, don't have to kill themselves in the gym to the point of injury etc. they don't believe me yet I'm the one in shape and they ask whenever we are out eating or drinking how I do it.....I explain and they want details....I say I eat whatever I want to a point. I don't gorge myself on a 1500 calorie meal then not eat until dinner time. I portion it out over the day to hit a goal for my body. It is nuanced in that everyone is different but a basic rule of energy in and energy out is all it takes. If you eat more then you burn you are Gunna gain weight. If you eat less then you burn you'll loose weight. Simple....easy and doesn't restrict the diet at all. Have that icecream just don't have the whole tub.....have that extra slice of pizza just don't eat the whole thing in one sitting.....stuff like that.
I have an autistic son and a stressful life as well. I often hear it's hard with kids and life....yeah ok I get that and I miss my goals sometimes but am I Gunna let it ruin the progress I made absolutely not.. people stress too much on the how and not as much on the oh well I'll start again tomorrow.
Social media doesn't help with them always trying to reinvent the wheel even with training. Your channel James is the only one I see telling it how it is.
It isn't complicated your phone can calculate your calories you need and don't. Your watch can track it these days it's simpler then ever but people make it so so complicated.

Great overall message, and a lot of people need to hear this. I will however add my two cents.
I have a very physical job and train multiple times a week. I never had an issue with excess body fat, six pack year round. I always felt like my issue was not getting enough calories because of how much I do.
However I recently switched to a whole food diet. Cut out a lot of excess sugar, processed food. Just very simple, fruit, nuts, veg, meat eggs and things like honey, rice legumes etc. just a basic, good food diet.
I noticed an enormous change, heaps of old injuries and niggles healed within weeks, sleep improved, digestion, mood. It was fascinating.
To me, obesity was never an issue.

Finally the a type of James Smith Video why i subscribed. As someone struggeling with obesity, i can only say that in the end the only thing helps, is reducing calories consumed, increase calories burned. (Basic stuff) AND all this needs to be in format that is sustainable in your lifestyle. And be aware of lifestyle changes and try to adapt early enough, thats what brings the yoyo-effect if not done. So walking more is also basic, but the easiest thing to include in a sustainable lifestyle. Take the stairs.

The statement you made about the meta analysis that "sugar on its own does not cause weight gain, and does not prevent weight loss, as long as you manage the amount of calories someone is consuming" is a simplification of the study's findings and requires some unpacking.
Here's what the study actually found:
    - Increased sugar intake *was associated with weight gain:* Adults who increased their sugar intake gained an average of 0.75 kg compared to those who didn't increase it.
    - Reduced sugar intake *was associated with weight loss:* Adults who reduced their sugar intake lost an average of 0.80 kg compared to those who didn't reduce it.
    - Isoenergetic exchange of sugar with other carbohydrates showed no weight change: When sugar was replaced with other sources of calories (like starchy carbohydrates), there was no significant weight difference.
However, the study also acknowledges some limitations:
    - Short intervention durations: Most studies lasted less than 8 weeks, making long-term effects unclear.
    - Difficulty controlling caloric intake: It's challenging to isolate the effect of sugar alone, as people often change their overall calorie intake when advised to change their sugar intake.
    - Potential publication bias: Studies showing significant effects are more likely to be published, which could skew the overall picture.
Based on these findings, here's a more nuanced interpretation:
    - While managing overall calorie intake is crucial for weight management, evidence suggests that simply reducing sugar intake can lead to weight loss, and increasing it can lead to weight gain.
    - Sugar-containing foods and beverages often contribute to excess calorie intake, making it easy to consume more calories than needed, even if you consciously manage your overall intake.
    - The long-term effects of sugar intake on weight and health are less clear, and further research is needed.
Therefore, the statement you made is an oversimplification. While managing calorie intake is important, relying solely on that and ignoring the impact of sugar might not be the best approach for weight management.
Remember, interpreting complex research requires caution and a nuanced understanding. Always consider the study's limitations and context before drawing definitive conclusions.
Slightly ironic of you to roast people for not reading studies while low-key misrepresenting a study you referenced yourself. Stay humble.

I always try to keep an open mind about all of this just nowadays in a few seconds you hear about something and why you should do it and later you find someone telling you why you shouldn't do this. which is why this video describes this whole thing perfectly. just don't overthink stuff.

Car dependency has done a lot of damage to people's movement. Urban sprawl putting so many things we use constantly further away, and a high percentage of car journeys being only a couple miles it's no wonder people are fatter than they used to be. Walking or cycling to work and other places does your brain a whole lot of good and your body even more, and it means less pressure on you to get exercise in other times. Driving to the gym to go and step on a treadmill is absolutely insane. People are gaining weight because ordinary daily tasks require less movement than they used to and high calorie food is more accessible than ever, simple.

So nice to hear someone like you say there AREN'T some magical things, or compulsory steps that everyone MUST do to SMASH IT!!!!
I'm almost 10 years post a, very near death, liver transplant - lots of those "things everyone MUST DO" wont work for me - there is a big hole in my abdomen, a set of demons in my psych, and my meds mean that some days I can hardly move without join t pain - and there are others like me and a lot worse off.
I do what I can and work my 455 off (and am successful in transplant sport as a discus thrower both nationally and internationally) but I'll never look like a 'roided Instagram influencer - Keep doing what you are doing it helps folks like me!

I'm late to the comments, which means late to your channel...have to agree with the overall delivery.
But I'm more in agreement with the last bars you dropped: don't just train/gym, do so with a goal in mind. Do sport! Start off slow. Find ur pace, commit, and most of all, enjoy.
Also: I'm competing in my first bjj comp tomorrow! OSS😁
