I started out working as a carpenters helper at age 11 for a framing contractor. By my 3rd summer I was making full carpenter's wage at age 13. I did that until joining the Marine Corps after high school. After the military I worked with a remodeling company gutting row houses in Baltimore, Maryland and rebuilding them into commercial buildings. I worked with two architects who were heavy into alternative power and heating. I learned about solar heating, both active and passive and learned about solar panels and their workings. I worked for a remodeling company that specialized in cabinetry and restaurants. By the time I moved back to Texas I was considered a "Cabinet Master" and had started learning to build furniture. I started my own company and continued specializing in cabinetry and custom built furniture. Most of the furniture was things like massive entertainment centers, custom desks and converting existing furniture to include hidden secret compartments. I did some custom woodwork on a few yachts and some high end RV's. After my stroke I couldn't do the manual work I was used to, so I tried teaching trades. That's when I realized that not many people were interested in carpentry. So, I retired and immediately started remodeling my brother's house. After developing heart problems I even had to stop that. I belong to a few Face Book groups and still offer advice to DIYers and home builders. It seems well received and appreciated, plus it makes me feel I'm still accomplishing something with my skills. My advice to you is never quit learning. You'll learn something new almost every day if you listen to others. It may be a skill or it might only be what NOT to do if you'll allow yourself to learn from other's mistakes! And don't be afraid to try something new, as long as it doesn't interfere with the client's job or your reputation. Your reputation is what gets you future jobs. Be very careful with it! Then one day some random guy from far away shows up asking for your specific talents that you've not used in so long. And it makes you feel so alive you start shedding tears. Because it's your passion. Although Don Juan passed, he passed after a final connection to his beloved craft. It's not glamorous but his people are fed and protected, and I think that's probably more than he could have asked for. What better way to leave than to create before it's time?

well if you actually want to take it home with you, there’s a chance you could through a FFL dealer (gun shop owner), since the shotgun is break barrel and only holds 1 shot there’s very little restrictions in canada, you could get your firearms license or whatever you need out there and you should be good to import and own it. I’ve been in offices, shops, warehouses, construction sites and now I spend my time on a new construction sites as a carpenter. All of those locations you can find people that are a cut above the rest in their fields because intelligence has a way of shining through. It may look different in every setting but it’s unmistakable. In this video it showcases that in a setting that most people wouldn’t expect it and that’s a shame that people believe intellectuals only come from a college. That gunsmith was amazing and passionate about his profession.
Rest in peace Old Don Juan hopefully someone as kind hearted as him carries on his legacy and never stop with the vid man i spend HOURS a day watching them wishing i was there
The gun he made is so beautiful. I recently inherited a shotgun from my later grandfather. It was a manufactured product but well cared for over the years and I could feel the history in the wood furniture when I gripped it in my hands. Don Juan's gun looked almost like the spitting image of it, Good quality workmanship that matches anything you could buy from a big box store in quality, but lots of soul, the man pour himself into that gun I can tell. Cherish that gun, a thing such as this is as irreplaceable as any art piece you'd find in the Louvre, the last work of a great master of the craft. Gosh, I can't help but remember the time my grandpa took me and my brother out back and taught us how to shoot for the first time.
Well, that made me cry. I'm on my last leg myself. Life is so short. But much better when you contribute, like old Don Juan did. He changed his world and made it a little better for a lot of his brothers. That's about all anyone can do. Thank you for posting this awesome video. Your work is appreciated.

The Mayan blacksmiths asked you to not show their faces but at 3mins 40 seconds you did. They trusted you and you disregarded them…
I’m sure it was an honest mistake, it’s at 3:44 hopefully he makes the necessary changes
Tranquilo viejo, seria dificil que alguien encuentre a esas personas tomando en cuenta que yucatan es amplio, que tiene multiples pueblos con multiples comisarias, y ademas el rostro ni se enfoca, no te piques
I work with a lot of Guatemalans / Mayans very crafty bunch I love listening to them quietly speak their native tongue in the back seat when we drive around it's fairly amazing they have amazing cultural cuisine as well they bring me lunch everyday some of them are some of the best friends I've ever had

The last rifle he made is for the world to see
Watching this got me a little emotional, senior don juan reminds me much of my abuelo. He enjoys working and crafting different remedies. But lately he's been getting a lot weaker and losing his strength. It hurts to see this but it brings me joy knowing how much don juan and my abuelo love crafting .
I love the Mayan culture, I wish I could go but I’m broke
Rip ol dawn Juan. Thank you sharing your art and gift with all who see this. May you rest in paradise

Have a few blades made of 5160 spring steel. They're absolutely fantastic. So thankful to see your video this Sunday morning. Always look forward to them.
Amazing story. Respect and appreciation for allowing us to witness these wonderful peoples. Don Juan's one I'll remember and share for a long time
I’ve been in offices, shops, warehouses, construction sites and now I spend my time on a new construction sites as a carpenter.
The finished gun he made at the end is absolutely beautiful It looks like it came right out of a factory with absolutely beautiful craftsmanship
Well, that made me cry. I'm on my last leg myself. Life is so short. But much better when you contribute, like old Don Juan did. He changed his world and made it a little better for a lot of his brothers. That's about all anyone can do. Thank you for posting this awesome video. Your work is appreciated.
