  • In 1944, Silvestre Herrera was drafted in to the US Army despite having three children and a wife. Herrera did not hesitate to serve his country and stated "I am a Mexican-American and we have a tradition. We're supposed to be men, not sissies."
Herrera was shipped to France with the 36th Infantry Division and during the fierce fighting that followed he quickly found the German Army was a fierce fighting force.
On March 15, 1945 Herrera and his unit found themselves trapped in a minefield and pinned down by German machine guns. While the other men in his unit dug in, Herrera stood up and charged the enemy.
For his actions he was alter awarded the Medal Of Honor.

Definitely one of my favorites. His story is amazing. Definitely one of the strongest willed MOH recipients. Only people like him could survive something like that. Great stuff.

Thank you for sharing his story. My hat goes off to you guys; this has been the most accurate retelling of his story I've ever heard. He was a truly inspiring man to know. He embodied duty to country, honor for what in means to be a citizen and respect of the rights we enjoy as Americans. He was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice necessary to protect it for all of us. Thankfully he did not pay that price and we are all better for it. He spent the rest of his life as a role model and spokesman for what he believed in. And yes, he was also an incredible artisan in leatherwork and as a silversmith! A humble man to his last... God rest his soul; may he rest in peace.

He was with the 142nd Infantry which was mixed, Mexican Americans and whites. Many of them were from Texas and the southwest so they would have a lot of similarities
