On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago on 6-5-17.
We're looking at a 1950 Muntz Jet Convertible (removable hardtop) in Merlot Red (to look like the original color Tahitian Red) Paint.
The car's Owner is Dave Hans. Dave’s had this car since 1969. He found the car in a junkyard and purchased it for $60.00. His plan was to use the car as a parts car for another Muntz Jet. Dave discovered he had the # 2 car produced, which of the first 28 cars built, all were built in California and made out of aluminum. The cars built after the first 28, were built in Chicago and were built out of steel.
This restoration is stellar, and the car looks like it just came off the showroom floor.

Such an amazing vehicle. Wonderful craftsmanship. Clean engine, runs like a dream and having only bought it for $60! Madman Muntz was an innovator in a lot of fields. Created the predecessor to the 8 track, created an affordable black and white television receiver, was a pioneer in advertising, and actually managed to make his used car sale lots the 7th Most popular tourist attractions in Southern California. American ingenuity at it’s finest.

I shared this video with Jim Muntz, son of Earl Muntz. He enjoyed seeing this. Earl was a pioneer in cars, TV's and car audio. My first job in 1974 was at MUNTZ STEREO, a Canadian retailer of Muntz 8 track car stereos........Earl was legend. Thanks Lou.

A little back story on this car... They mention that it was the work of Frank Kurtis, legendary builder of Indianapolis race cars. His shop was in Glendale California. He made race cars for all kinds of customers, and would build a custom sports car too if you asked.
In 1941 he bought a wrecked Buick and rebuilt it into a low, sleek sports car that looked very much like this car, and drove it to the last prewar Indy 500 in May 1941. After the war he made duplicates in series production like this car, one of 28.
Earl "Madman" Muntz made his fame as a salesman of radios and used cars during the war in California. When the Kaiser and Frazer cars came out in 1946 he became the California distributor. When he spotted the Kurtis sports cars, he made a deal with Kurtis to buy the rights.
This is when production was moved to Evanston, the car was lengthened 11 inches to get a bigger back seat and body was changed from aluminum to steel.
Production continued for a while but then the major manufacturers brought out cars like the Nash Healey. Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Thunderbird, Buick Skylark and Packard Caribbean. The very expensive, hand built Muntz cars could not compete on price and fell by the way side.
Still, a very fine and beautiful car that goes down in history as the first production sports car in America.

Muntz is car manufacturer I'd never heard of until stumbling across this video. Extraordinary attention to detail on what has so obviously been a real labor of love begs the question, "how do you make a small fortune out of restoring an old car ?" The answer : start with a large one. Lovely exhaust note, not at all what I expected. This restoration is a real credit to the extremely knowledgeable owner.

Lou:it should be noted that in the early 50's the Caddy V8 engine was the "go too"
    engine for performance.
This all changed in '55 with the legendary Chev V8 engine. In fact, the Chev V8 was actually based upon the Caddy V8.
Designer Ed Cole modified the Chevy V8 to be lighter and more agile and thus operate at higher RPM for even more power. You can not discount the Caddy V8 of that era because even though it's heavier and has less RPM, it's a torquey gem and can be turned for a lot more power as is the case in this Muntz jet. I've actually worked on a few of these early Caddy V8's
    Certainly a nice car there.

Lou! This is bad ass!!! I've never heard of a Muntz Jet and am very impressed with the showing of this one.
I regret that you didn't remove the top or at least answer a question or two; does the hard top somehow fit in the trunk or do you have to leave it at home, how difficult is the hard top to remove, is it a one man job, stuff like that.
I loved the sound of it running and was knocked back on my ass with the engine! Damn.

people that take care of spesial cars /old cars .have a passion for it and work etiks. It is a servise for the public to see great design in car history.a real labor of love.this car made my eyes go wet.he he.the shape is unik with curves that make it a little mean looking with nice curves.like the rear bumper shape with the shape of the rear body.It looks veteran but modern at the same time to in my opinion.my hat of to you
