    This has given me the confidence to go get an aftermarket tank, get a custom paint job and swap it myself avoiding the "Harley premium" at the dealership!

    Absolutely no clearance problems Peter - thanks for the comment & compliment.
    I'm considering what next to do - on many levels - probably a seat change ... I do like your idea on the rims though, that'd make it "pop" !!
    Cheers mate.

  • @Maungakeikei
    @Maungakeikei  11 років тому +3

    It's just the original seat recovered with brown, slightly mottled looking leather..
    Something a little different to all the black seats and contrasts quite nicely I think - but that was the work of the first owner and he did a great job.
    Cheers Mate !

    Cheers Ricky - it's pretty easy to do , just work your way through it bit by bit. The trickiest part was getting the bloody pump out .. Yeah she's a great bike & an excellent ride.
    Thanks for watching.

  • @Maungakeikei
    @Maungakeikei  10 років тому +2

    Hey Christopher - Nothing was wrong with the fuel pump - it was just a really tight fit - made worse by the re-spray paint around the edge. It will come out and go back in, it just depends on how ya hold your tongue ..

    Beautiful '48. I've considered the same upgrade. That tank looks natural on your bike. I don't need the extra fuel all the time but I also don't like the painted metal gap on the 2.1 between seat and tank. Well done!

    Hi don. Thanks for doing the video, very helpful! I have a 2014 72 sportster with the 2.1 gallon gas tank. I put a 3.3 gallon tank on from a harley 883 and fits great. Ran into the same problem with the over flow hose but it's up and running just fine. Glad I don't have to stop for gas as much now.

    Thank you very much for your time in making this Video. I have a Fat Bob for some time now, ( my second), and my wife wants to get her own bike again. She loves the 48 but was worried about the small fuel tank. You have provided the solution. Thank you again from Texas.

      You won't be disappointed with a 48 - even though I am now going to a Fatboy ( my wife bought me one - amazing but true..) - the 48 will all remain for me one of the most fun, robust bikes out there.

    Excellent tutorial thanks a lot. I am looking at bring in a 48 and like you am not a fan of the peanut tank, looks and mileage. So I checked out J&P cycles in the states and they do a 4.5 gallon for that is meant to fit the sporties without too much hassle. It has the mileage and looks I'm after.
    Thanks again, got this saved for future use.

    Mr. King - thanks very much for posting this. My local HD wants "3 or 4 hours of labor to do a tank swap" (says the parts guy) @ $110/hr. I told him to go pound sand. You've proved it is pretty easy when you have the right tools. I'm swapping to a HD 4.5 gal, and it gives me good reason to swap my seat as well. Thanks again!

      "I told him to go pound sand" - ha ha - man if your ever down in New Zealand give me a call and we'll go drink a few beers !! I'm contemplating a new vid with my latest bike a 2013 Fatty - same issue a small job and I queried the local dealer and it was ridiculou$ - so I've never done wiring before but I'll give it a go - if I screw it up THEN I'll take it to the dealer - take care bro.

    the fuel line can simply be cut to measure then add a dot of glue to the out side of the fuel line tube and it's good to go for you to put the fuel line original adapter back on 👍

    I have an '06 1200 Low (carbed) and it has a much larger stock tank than what you are putting on that 48. J&P Cycles has a 4.5 gallon tank for $200 that will fit the 48, and give you a lot more range. It's not the peanut style, looks more like a fatbob tank with a center gas filler. But for me, I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of looks for more range, as I live in the AZ desert, and gas stations can be few and far between.

  • @Maungakeikei
    @Maungakeikei  11 років тому

    There's no gasket Rob - the base of the pump acts as a seal / gasket and it's a really tight fit. Regards the fuel line I suggest you just purchase some fuel line and route it through where the original one was. Good luck mate your 72 looks great !

    To "oldpieceoflooseass" -
    Really???
    “Sportster are for pussies” - Ouch I’m sooooooooooo hurt.
    Is that the best Trolling insult you can come up with ??
    Mate, I’ve read that same shit before … unoriginal & really lame… duh
    - makes me wonder why you’d seek out a vid obviously dedicated to Sportster owners - I reckon you secretly covet sporty ownership
    BUT !! If that’s what YOU really believe to be true - then you’d better rush out and buy yourself a Sportster, because if “Sportster are for pussies” then you are certainly more than qualified to own one.

    Nice looking bike! Job looks easy enough to do. I didn't notice any gasket between the fuel pump & tank, what keeps it from leaking or did I miss something? Can you just cut the Harley overflow shorter with a tube cutter & stick the flexible line back on? JP Cycles sells a 4.5 gal peanut tank on line that's what I'm getting for my 2013 Sportster 72. The 2 gal tank isn't enough! My bigest problem will be matching the big red metal flake hard candy paint job I think

    Hi Don, great, nicely paced instructions there, and a really lovely take on the 48 as well, The old tank was nice but the wine red and silver is very tasteful and suits the bike too. Did you have any clearance problems on full lock with the drag bars and the standard tank?
    One thought, just shooting the breeze, but to reflect the colour of the tank stripe and decal in the wheels rims in powder coat would look stunning with the white walls!
    Thanks for sharing. All the best from the UK.

    If you really wanna go big you can go with the 4.5 gallon 1200XL Custom tank. Not sure where the overflow is but it should fit perfectly.
    41 bucks for fuel line - those people high?
    Mod looks good, and yea, 2.1 gallons that the 48/72's have stock is pathetic. Great if you don't ride your bike far I guess, ha. The 3.3 Iron tank still looks peanuty, I agree.

    Hey Don. Firstly, great bike and excellent video. One question for you. How much gas did you leave in the tank? Did you just run it dry or siphon it out?

    • @Maungakeikei
      @Maungakeikei  10 років тому +1

      I ran it as low as practical - it still had a litre or so in it when I took her off - don't worry when you remove the fuel line only a "drop" or two will come out (@ 7:09). Before you remove the fuel pump, get a bucket - remove the cap - turn the tank over the bucket and empty the remaining gas (into the bucket) - you can of course reuse this gas if desired, but my bucket wasn't new and I wasn't about to put possible contaminated gas into the Sporty just to save $2 - it was ALL fresh gas on start up. > Hope that helps mate & thanks for the compliment. Cheers.

      Thanks mate - I think so - however my wife ( 'her indoors' ) wanted to ride again with me, as my leg injury -(the reason initially I purchased the 48) - had improved to a degree .... so she bought me a 2013 FATBOY with only a couple of hundred Km's on the clock. For a while I had two Harley's and I was still taking the 48 out for exercise - but all things come to an end and I sold the 48 to a great couple from down the line - I know she's gone to a good home.. As for the fatty - I've just replaced the pillion seat, installed a removable sissybar, docking system, relocated the rear turn signals, spliced the wiring, installed an Auxillary brake light system and replaced the standard signal lens with some old school ...and that'll go to vid when I get round to it.

    Good video Man..I got the 2015 Forty-eight with the Hard Custom Candy blue tank..I love the color and the tank but like you I want more mileage out of this tank.After watching this I can see that the Iron tank looks cool on the 48 but Im now worried about having to settle for another color as the current color will be hard to replicate!What to do..P.S-Choice Onehunga T- shirt Man!

    I got a 2014 883 iron with dents in the gas tank. My question is how to get them out?

    Hey Don, Did you use a gasket between the pump and tank? Also when they paint the tank do they paint the inside as well as the outside?

      Hi A.T. - No gasket required mate and just spray the outside - mask off the base where the fuel pump goes in (covering the edge where it seats) and where the gas goes in and any other inlet & it's good for a respray. The tank I replaced hadn't had this done properly so the spray was inside - thick around the edge - thats why it was a pain in the arse to get the pump out as the clearance is minimal.

    Great video. There is a gasket , green in colour, attached to the base of the fuel assembly. Ideally a new gasket should be installed when reinstalling the fuel assembly into the tank. Here’s a link to a video showing the installation of a fuel gauge, it shows the old gasket being replaced: ua-cam.com/video/xcYmc44Oqmc/v-deo.html

    Also is that after market decal painted on the tank or is it a sticker? Do you have a link to where I can buy one?

      Yep - it's at the end in the credits - one sweet lady stateside - Sally Hardison - Facebook.com/sallyssigns - I really highly recommend this lady and the quality is excellent.
