  • We took a drive along a truly challenging gravel road from Van Zylsrus to Askham. Despite this, we managed to navigate it without incident and reached our destination early evening. Our overnight accommodation, Askham Chalets, exuded a delightful coziness that instantly made us feel at home. The following morning, we set out to explore the town. We stumbled upon an incredible store called the Askham Trading Post. It was filled with a diverse array of items for sale, and we couldn't resist the temptation to indulge in two delicious pies. Next we visited the Diamond T Coffee and Gift Shop. As I strolled through the shop, I was captivated by the stunning view it offered of the majestic Kalahari dunes. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight that left us feeling mesmerised. Overall, our trip to Askham was an adventure to remember. From conquering the challenging gravel road to discovering cozy accommodation, indulging in delicious food, and being enchanted by the breathtaking views. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #askham

    Hi DustBugs, I love reading your followers comments. There is always someone that "been there done that" you touch people wherever you go. And for us who have never been there, it's wonderful to be shown the towns without traveling the bad dirt roads. Thank you. We love what you do.

      We're only discovering most of these places for the first time, so are always happy to read about others' experiences and especially memories of a specific place or area. We're totally happy to travel on the bad (and the good!) gravel roads to show you more places, we love it! 🚙🤩 Thank you for watching!

    Beautiful region of Northern Cape.
    You took me down memory lane.
    The stretch of road between Van Zylsrus and Askam is a dry river bed.
    I loved the warm days and chilly nights.
    Thank you for the journey. I'm planning a return visit to the area following the Red Dune Route.

    Best Milk tart at Diamond T. The road between VzR either a disaster or ok, depending on how many trucks have been through. But thankfully the attendant at the Garage gives you a heads-up if it is too bad . Love your channel. Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Thank you, happy to hear you enjoy our videos! 🚙😁 The milk tart, actually our entire meal that evening, was fantastic! 👌🏻 So many people warned us against this specific road, but we knew we'd take it slow as we always do and we had to get to our overnight accommodation in Askham. We've been on worse roads before, but what makes this one really bad, is the length and duration of constant corrugation. It's all part of the experience and the adventure though, so we'll do it again in a heartbeat! 🤩

    Wow ...these little Kalahari towns never seize to amaze me. They all have their own character and history. So terribly sad the story of the family that perished in that fire.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +1

      It really is a very tragic story about all those people who lost their lives in that fire! It's great that they are honoured by that monument though. 😥🏛️ You're so right, each one of these small places are unique in their own way and have an atmosphere all their own. We enjoyed each one as much as the previous one, it was really a fantastic experience! 🚙🤩

    I was so surprised to see Askham. What a nice little town and so alive and busy. I have not been there before but thanks to you i now was there. The Kalahari is a distinct area and the vegetation is stunning. I loved this video and also the shop you were in reminded me of my days as kid in Somerset West. You had these general dealers selling from a bicycle to meat an veggies! Then we went with 5 pennies and bought "deurmekaar lekkers" which they rolled a paper cone and put the mixed sweets in there. A video well done and thank you so much for this trip. Luckily my seat is booked for the next one.

      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +2

      I can relate so much to your story about the sweets in the paper cone! Those were the days, uncomplicated and so much fun! 😁🍬🍭 My childhood days weren't quite so close to the area you and I call home nowadays, but still very similar to what you describe. I'm so glad you enjoyed Askham with us, it was a fantastic stopover in this tiny place and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring all the sights. The camelthorn trees in this area blew our minds, it's so typical of this desert landscape and they were just wonderful to see everywhere! 🌳💚 You know your seat is booked permanently, be ready tomorrow morning! 🚙🤩

I was offered an accommodation three if not two houses from those chalet’s by a retired SAA pilot and his wife, Those two are angels in human form love them to bits. The filling station on your way to the chalets closes at 18:00. That is the quietest and safe places around there. Enjoying your content you never disappoint.

    I was hoping you'd leave some of that wonderful dinner for me, especially the malva pudding. I have personally sampled Diamond T's coffee and cake- the food certainly looked good. What a lovely place to stay over- Askham is so interesting. Honky tonk piano was fantastic! The camel story- strangely, my father was a policeman in South West Africa before WW2 and he told many stories of going on camel patrol.

      There wasn't a single morsel of that malva pudding left, let me tell you! 😆 Malva is one of my all-time favourite desserts and when I saw it was an option with the curry, I was sold! Our accommodation was cute and cosy and Askham an absolutely fantastic place to visit and explore! 🚙🤩 How cool that your dad also patrolled on camels! That is super interesting! 🐪👨🏻‍✈️

    Hello travel companions. Some or most of you may remember in the bioscopes, back in the day, had the two masks as a décor, as the entertainment embodiment of happy and sad faces, (to put it simply). That's the towns we go visit with the kindness of our guides Curtis & Sonia. Almost always, it leaves us with happy and sad views or history. In Askham, tranquillity overall, the shop that has something for anyone, and the tragedy of the family that lost their lives in one fell swoop. How the survivors must have suffered. But people continue to get on for the love of the town "far from the madding crowd". On a lighter note Curtis, how were the pies?❤💯

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +1

      I know the two masks you're talking about, often used in theatres to this day! 🎭 Your description of the towns and places we get to visit, is spot on. Always some happy and some sad, but luckily almost always much more happy than sad! Askham was a fantastic place to explore, we loved every minute while we were driving around in the little town. The pies were fantastic, they surely hit the spot that day! 🚙🥐

    Hi you two! What an amazing sunset trip to that little town, with all sorts of animals and a vulture silhouette along the way. Your overnight place was a really cozy desert cabin with its cute little green garden looking out on the dry fields. Your drone views showed how small the town really is. With all that stock the "Supermark" must be serving all the way into Namibia and Botswana!
    I find it difficult to decide what is most enchanting; the peaceful town or the captivating peacefulness of the dry surrounds.
    Pity about the school. i hope it will be up and r4unning soon with its boarding house..
    A real awe-inspiring trip, as you said. I'll be ready for the next journey.
    Keep safe on those lonely desert roads.

      Those vultures were the first ones we've ever seen outside of a National Park, so that was super cool! And all the wildlife on this road was just fantastic, we loved it! 😍🦒🦅 That trading post was really well-stocked, they literally had everything in there! I think a lot of folks stock up there on their way to the Kgalagadi. 🛒 It was really sad to see the school destroyed like that, that is something I struggle to make peace with on our travels. 😥🤷‍♂️ Thanks for joining us in Askham! 🚙

    Zo mooi om telkens jullie liefde voor de dieren te horen, zien en ‘voelen’ 😍. Prachtig, het vele wild life langs de weg, in gedachte was ik weer even terug in het Kruger Park. En vergat ik pardoes de eventueel gevaarlijk scherpe steentjes onderweg. Komisch die giraffe, jullie bewonderden elkaar, zo te zien 😅🦒. Wat een werk moet het zijn om die hoge afrastering langs de weg te onderhouden waardoor ze, gelukkig voor beide partijen, niet zomaar oversteken. Jullie overnachtingsplek was de moeite van het wachten absoluut waard. Hoe lekker Bobotie ook is, die lamscurry zag er geweldig uit 😋😋😋. Een leuk, klein, schoon en mede dankzij toerisme levendig stadje met een heel verleidelijke souvenier winkel (met een ‘koekjes’ pot, jummie). De geur van de verse pasteitjes kwam bijna mijn neus in. Die klokkentoren ziet er uniek uit. De kerk zelf lijkt wel een soort ruimteschip ontwerp … was de architect in zijn ‘galaxy fase’ 😊🛸? De ‘bereden politie’ per kameel, wat goed bedacht vroeger! Het klinkt als een soort sprookje uit 1001 nachten 🐫👮‍♂️

      @Ingeborg Van der Veer Animals are our favourite things to see when we travel! They never get boring, we just love them so much! 😍🦒🦅 This gravel road was particularly productive, especially for one outside of a National Park! The curry and bobotie were both great and so welcome after a long day on the road! Tourism is most definitely a big driving force in this town and I think a lot of folks stop here on their way in and out of the Kgalagadi. It's great that the businesses seem to be doing well in Askham. I also loved the belltower and the church was a rather futuristic design for its time. I agree with you! 💒🛸 I could only imagine hundreds of camels roaming at Witdraai, that must've been quite the sight! 🚙🐪 How fantastic that you found another very loyal viewer fluent in Dutch, I just love that! 👌🏻
