@@D055__ Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. Presumably everyone has different tastes when it comes to the balance between immersion and keeping it enjoyable. For me, the immersion-breaking aspect of always joking (to where it often feels like it's no longer the character speaking but the player) just stands out a lot more in a darker setting. I am curious to see where the tone will settle in The Ravening War, too.

They made a joke that maybe his voice would be clearer if he drank water, bc that’s what would help someone in a realistic setting. It just spiraled from there, as most of their bits do!

In this situation, Cricket is already ‘dead’ because Pinnochio killed him by accident (which is apparently what actually happens in some tellings), but is ‘fine’ due to being a spirit here. The mentioned Stepmother is a _very_ corrupted version of Cinderella’s Stepmother, who erased her own name and became an eldritch being (this was _before_ making a deal with Pinnochio to ‘protect’ his father, Gepetto, from things that would harm him. “Things” is including a witch that undid Pinnochio’s ‘real boy’ ending). Also, Cricket was… on an anti-water bend after consuming salt water a while ago.
