  • Do you want to learn English with the TV show Friends? I’ll show you how to learn English speaking by analyzing a fun clip from the iconic TV show Friends, the one with Rachel's English Trifle! English learners know that learning how to read in English is only half the battle. If you want to also speak English well, one great way to learn is through the kinds of conversation analysis I’ll demonstrate for you here. I can help you learn English speaking by showing you the reductions and linking that native English speakers use in conversational English. These are the elements that might make you feel like you’re not able to follow native American English speakers when they’re talking at a full conversational pace. When you use TV shows like Friends to learn English speaking you’re conquering one of the huge challenges right from the outset: you’re learning from native English speakers! The sounds that make up spoken English don’t always correlate to the letters on the page but I’ll help you learn English with the TV show Friends and in no time you’ll be sounding more and more like a native speaker of American English! Let’s get to work!

      Hi Rachel, my name is Abdulelah, I'm from Saudi Arabia and I'm one of your student in Rachel's English Academy. I have been busy these days on my final exams so I cannot practice my pronunciation skills in Rachel's English Academy and I just want to ask you " How can I pause my subscription or cancel it " And then after I finish them I would like to continue practicing.

    I’m an American native English speaker. And watching this in this way, it’s actually amazing that no native speaker would ever have the slightest trouble understanding such conversations when so many words are cut short and/or run together. Obviously all languages do similar things. Our brains are quite amazing at understanding language.

    Hi Rachel, in the sentence 'Will you serve the dessert already?', the T in dessert is a Stop T. However, the next word begins with a vowel. I thought we have Stop T when the next word begins with a consonant?

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  2 роки тому +2

      There are no real "rules" that define how you have to say this. Some people will use a Flap T here, others will use a Stop T, as you describe. Both are perfectly fine options!

    Hi Rachel, I got a question regarding your pronunciation of the word "didn't" in 0:03. It seems like you pronounced the second d sound as a stop T. Should it be pronounced as a flap T or a stop T? When I think of the rule, it should be a flap T, but I really find it inconvenient and unnatural to pronounce that, especially when I'm speaking fast. Is stop T acceptable? Same question for the words "couldn't", "wouldn't" "shouldn't". Many thanks!

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  4 роки тому +2

      Hi! I'm using a Stop D (or a Held D) in the word 'didn't'. That is different from the Stop T in that it is a voiced sound. You will hear the beginning of the D sound, and then the release directly into the following consonant, the N sound. The same thing does happen with 'couldn't', 'wouldn't' and 'shouldn't'. We're actually working on a video on the Held D right now - so you'll be able to learn more about this soon! :)

    I taught English to Russian conscripts and learned from a native Russian speaker that one of the best ways to learn English from TV was by watching Star Trek Next Generation. The dialogue was always immediately followed by an action. That made it easy for non-English speakers to pick up the context.
