a couple of common questions answered: *Why did you say "tinfoil" while you were building?* I said tinfoil out of habit but at *54* seconds in I give the supplies list and say, "you need aluminum foil". The supplies list, the description box, and my blog, all call for aluminum foil. I did say tin in this video while building,, oops, it was a mistake. Yes, you are right, it's called aluminum foil. I have done my best to break the habit tho and I’ve managed to keep the word tinfoil out of my videos since. 😅 *How much foil did I use?* I didn't measure but definitely less than 40 feet. I actually want to say about 20 - 30 but it's safer to guess beyond that. How much you use will depend on the size of tree you make. I used the cheapest foil I could find, you do not need heavy duty foil. *Can I paint the inside chamber where the light goes?* Absolutely! I did paint one of mine black in case I didn't use tissue paper. It worked out fabulous. *Can I add more branches?* You can add on and take away anything you want to. This is a project you can do just about anything with. Have fun!
@Where The Gnomes Live - Many people use the term tin foil when they are actually talking about aluminum foil; seems like everyone knows what they are referring to. Also, it's a lot quicker to say. ;-)
yes! Thank you.. there are some people who are focusing on the word, it's a distraction for them. I never even gave it a thought before this video. I walk into any store and ask where they keep their tin foil and without a blink of an eye I'm directed right to the aluminum foil. It's been referred to as tin foil all my life. I'll try very hard to remember to always call it aluminum in future videos.. I can't make it a promise though, I get all carried away grabbing that tin foil! lol
This woman is one of the best craft teachers I've found on youtube. She not only explains clearly what she's doing and what materials she's using, but she also gives you different options on other materials and methods that will either work the same, or give you different effects depending on what you want. Fantastic stuff!
She is! She described the shading and drybrushing and highlighting just perfect. For some reason it’s a hard concept for the not so crafty people. This was also the first you tube vid that I didn’t want to constantly fastforward.
Well, thanks a lot. Now I have to quit my job so I can addictively binge on ALL of your videos and then do all 183,736 projects that popped into my poor brain ASAP!!! Liked, subscribed, and shared! 💖

Never thought, tin foil, paper towels and masking take could become something so FANTASTICAL!!! But here you are KILLING IT!!! Thanks for the inspiration!!!!
What a great tutorial! Not only does it cater to people with a similar skill level but this illustrates how ANYONE can make this spooky tree and it will still turn out looking awesome, and with very inexpensive materials. Love the look of the finished craft and inspired to make one. I've been a paper mache-er for over 16 years and love the texture you got from the paper towel. Really well done! Subscribed!
Oh my god! U are an answered prayer! My son will marry next sept . Long story short. 10 tables, 10 different themes, I need to make a whomping willow! U saved my creative reputation! Thank you Thankyou!!
What a great little project! I, also, appreciate the way you give directions. You speed up when appropriate and explain when needed. I don't always find posts where I can follow to a Tee what they are doing, but I find your directions easy to follow, especially when you explained about the arms drying with the glue and then becoming soggy agsin after painting. If I didn't know I might panic. Thanks for your inspiration!

FYI I'm mid 60s and call it tin foil, foil, or the whole aluminum foil, depends on my mood or whatever comes out. Don't sweat it, it's not like you used a Company Brand name, even then, who cares? Since this Vid is almost 3 years old, I've lots more to watch! Thanks so much!
I’m from England and I love that Americans go all out for the different holidays lol. People only decorate their houses for Halloween if they’re having a party around my area. We tend to do a pumpkin, that’s it lol.
yes! Some do, I'm actually in Canada but there's many Canadians too that put in a huge effort for Halloween. With graveyards and haunted houses in their front lawns, lol it's really fun to see. Great fun for the kids!
He’s fabulous. Would love to see the forest you’re working on too. Thanks for sharing a very nice video to watch and listen to, even with the TIN foil noise🤣 I may attempt this guy...and I don’t even have to go out and buy any supplies for a change!
Amazing ! I was absolutely, “mesmerized” by your talent ! Oh Yeah, for fun I want to make, “Spooky Trees” with my teenage grandchildren. You have inspired me, to be more crafty, for all the holidays.
Thank you for another great video. You are among the best crafty video makers on UA-cam, no idle chatter about nothing or wasting time explaining things like we are totally stupid. Well done, love the tree gonna give it a go.
At first glance, this looks like it would be difficult but the more I watched, the more I saw how easy it actually is - and how awesome it looks at that! What a great tutorial! I'm glad UA-cam suggested this to me today. :)
He turned out great. Brought back memories of The Wizard of Oz and the haunted forest and those mean apple trees. Lolol Thanks for the well done tutorial. Really great job.👍🏼
Made this a couple years ago for my daughter as a Halloween decoration, it is her favorite holiday. She leaves “him” out all year. Named him Harvey, wears a Christmas hat and a heart necklace for Valentine’s Day. Was pretty easy following your video. Thanks for all your work. Stay safe
I had no intention of watching this entire video, although as you were explaining how to build the tree and how amazing it looks I was intrigued. You sucked me in to watching a video I normally wouldn’t watch due to the length but YOU captured my attention and I am glad that I watched it to its end. Thank you for such a great instructional video I am going to try and find some time to actually make one of these trees!
Wonderful tutorial! Awesome and very inspiring job!!! Additional huge THANKS for clear language. English is my third language and I did not have any difficulties to understand you.
Your technique is perfect for the Banyan Tree that I'm needing to make for my stop-motion animated film. Your method allows for some movement of the fingers and hands (the way I"m leaving the fingers not so glued and a bit more flexible). The Banyan has those creepy air roots dripping down from the top and your idea works well with that, Plus, I'm adding in some rope tendrils too. Thank you for your excellent instructions and directions.
Thanks to this video I was able to make a tree very similar to yours, but it’s about 5’6” tall! It really turned out so cool! My tree trunk base is plastic coffee containers, and then I filled in areas, sculpted, and paper machete over it. Branches are made like yours. I found the whole process to be very relaxing!
ohhh that is so awesome! I like how you used other materials to fill in, that's great. 5'6!!! That's taller than I am, lol and that beats my tallest tree too. My tree that I built into a corner of my craft room is almost 5ft, (If I'm remembering correctly), my cats love love love it but the Gnomes don't like cats hahaha And yes, I find building to be relaxing and therapeutic for me. I believe that's why I build things so large, I don't wanna stop!
@@WhereTheGnomesLive Thanks for your replies! I did leave one kind of funny part out. I wanted the tree to be done for Halloween that year, but I had to have surgery right in the middle of building it. HI THERE! I really want to thank you for showing everyone how to make this awesome tree! Last year I made my own version for Halloween, and it was over five feet talll! It was a huge success at my daughter’s house because we placed him right near the door. The only problem was where to store him afterwards. My husband made a shelf on the wall in our living room , and it stays there year round!💕

Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial!!!! I finally finished my 1st tree I'm so pleased with him and it's all thanks to your great instructions I am rarely on Facebook like once a year. But I have posted pictures of him on my Instagram and gave you a shout out for it! Again thank you so much, Your awesome!
A haunted little tree! Perfect! I will certainly keep this project on my list of things to try. I'm also very interested in this wicked look you've pulled off. I'm seriously tempted to make it on a large scale as a prop for my Halloween yard display. Other tree videos just don't capture the same spookiness that this one does. Great inspiration! Thanks!
Wow that’s amazing. I never thought of doing anything like this. I do theater props and this is going to be used on a larger scale too. But I’m gonna make a full haunted forest and even make some trolls.
Great tutorial, very inspiring to create things with whatever you have at home. Thank you for making it! And thank you for not adding any annoying music, made it easy to focus on what you were saying.
* grin* We can't see you,so no clue on your age, lol, but i'm of the age that'll call it tin foil 'til I die too,so I get it. Anyone with parents raised pre-WW2 will, because prior to then, foil made from Tin WAS the cheap stuff( hence tinfoil) ppl wrapped leftovers in ! *snicker* Plus,if you'd said Aluminum foil, your whole feed would be full of the debate on how to say it, "Aluminum or Aluminium !( They're both right folks, look it up !) Great tutorial, I learned this technique off my fave old crafting show" The Carol Duvall Show" in the early 90's ,one of my fave old standards,so much easier than traditional wire ones...you did it very well :)
Absolutely in love with these trees! I've gotten back into crafting and now want to attempt some wicked trees! Thank you for a really informative video!
Woooooooooooaaaah 👍 😲 👍 A stunning job, I love anything like this. Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed it and appreciate how much time and effort that you must have spent while building such a beauty 👍😉👍
I want to thank you for your tips to make this such a fun project! Your tree is fabulous! It’s cool to see how they slowly develop their personality as you make them! To save a little on using too much foil, I recycled the paper towel empty roll and a couple of lids from our take out Mexican bowls. The lids were sturdy for the base and arms. Happy Halloween!
I realize it's been 3 yrs since you made this fantastic tree, but it's the first time I've viewed the video. Amazing job!!!! New subbie, looking forward to viewing & using your technique.😵
I am about 12 minutes into the video paused it and went to look if I have the supplies to make this because this is just way to cool and YES I have all the supplies and super stoked and ready to make him...Thank You for sharing this idea, and excellent tutorial

This is the kind of thing I was hoping would happen, you go check and yup, you got it all! lol I remember years ago wanting to craft, usually it would hit me around midnight when stores were closed, and I had to use things I had on hand. Where the gnomes live, you are absolutely amazing!! Thank you soooooo much beautiful soul.
thank you so much, that really means a lot!
You can build so many things with this method!
Thank you!
in the creepy halloween mood anybody???
A haunted little tree! Perfect! I will certainly keep this project on my list of things to try. I'm also very interested in this wicked look you've pulled off. I'm seriously tempted to make it on a large scale as a prop for my Halloween yard display. Other tree videos just don't capture the same spookiness that this one does. Great inspiration! Thanks!
Brilliant you are very talented. I want to do a log for a small owl to sit on so this has given me an idea of what to do. Thank you.
Wow that’s amazing. I never thought of doing anything like this. I do theater props and this is going to be used on a larger scale too. But I’m gonna make a full haunted forest and even make some trolls.
It would be really awesome to see what you make.
Awesome Tutorial! And The Resulting Item is Super Spooky FANTASTIC! I cant wait to do this! Thanks So Much for Sharing This on UA-cam! You Rock!
In the 80's you would have been a top special effects artist. LOL. nice.
lol that's awesome, thank you!!
This is simply the most brilliant DIY video I’ve ever seen!!!
thank you very much!
This was an extremely well done tutorial. I like creepy Halloween trees.
That was amazing. Thank you for sharing your time and art!🌻
I’m amazed at your creativity...love love this. Thank you for posting!!!
A true labor of love, but very helpful tutorial.
I love this tree !!! Now I’m really wanting to make a large one for my porch for Halloween with some pumpkins!! 💕💕💕💕💕
Outstanding. Clear concise instructions, and you demonstrate everything very well.
Thank you very much!
Awesome job! Using glue, tin foil, tape, and, paint...Who knew. Love to see what else you come up with.
I prefer watching you on TV easier to see.
This is so cool
This looks amazing. Love that its made with stuff thats typically on hand.
Merci beaucoup pour ce joli tutoriel ! Le résultat est magnifique ! Félicitations ! Bises de Paris.
XTL Lancelot hello tu vas essayer?
Wonderful! How can some guys not like it? I really want to try my own! Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial, very inspiring to create things with whatever you have at home. Thank you for making it! And thank you for not adding any annoying music, made it easy to focus on what you were saying.
and it's so easy to mold, and cheap. Ì have to stop commenting but I'm glad I found you!
I did this a couple of years ago and it turned out great!
This was very very cool! Kinda reminds me of the apple trees in the original wizard of oz!
This technique is FANTASTIC!!! Plan on doing a great big one for Halloween. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!
You are so welcome! Glad it's helpful. Happy crafting!
I absolutely love this. I’m going to make some for my mantle and for my daughter-in-law. Thank you for sharing.
I realize it's been 3 yrs since you made this fantastic tree, but it's the first time I've viewed the video. Amazing job!!!! New subbie, looking forward to viewing & using your technique.😵
I am about 12 minutes into the video paused it and went to look if I have the supplies to make this because this is just way to cool and YES I have all the supplies and super stoked and ready to make him...Thank You for sharing this idea, and excellent tutorial
ohhh I'm so happy to read your comment! This is the kind of thing I was hoping would happen, you go check and yup, you got it all! lol I remember years ago wanting to craft, usually it would hit me around midnight when stores were closed, and I had to use things I had on hand. That's what I want to share with others, the ability to be creative with basic supplies or with supplies you can buy just about anywhere. Thanks for taking the time to comment, you made me smile :)
The best Halloween craft that I have seen and I have watched a lot of them. I just love your trees and will definitely will be attempting to make one. Thank you so much for sharing all your expertise. I can tell you have been making them for awhile. I subscribed, can’t wait to see what else you make.
