- I'm doing another workshop at Midwest Gaming Classic on April 29th, 2022. 1-5PM. It's the same project as in November but with some ease-of-assembly improvements. This video walks you through the steps, and I also explain the game I made in more detail.

That Louis Rossman imitation is perfect - 0:25
Loved it!
Oh my god that Louis Rossmann impression 😂
I know, right ? 30 secs into the video and I thought I was on the wrong channel.
It immediately got him a like :)
I'm still working on my Retro Recipes impression. Someday...
For those asking, charge controller is: MCP73832T-5ACI/OT
Thank you
But.....*drum roll*
Can this thing play Crysis? 😁
Hey Ben, which MCU is it running? Really looking forward to this, as I haven't done SMD soldering before.
@@BrainSlugs83 ATTINY1616 new line of Tinys with better peripherals.
The Rossman impression is spot on
I appreciate the amount of work you put into your MGC presentations. "Not satisfied with the current design, I can make it better" - Every Engineer Ever.
Biggest change was a THICC regulator to make soldering easier for people.
I really thought Louis Rossman was speaking, but then I heard PPBUS 3 times with no "V3" at the end and the magic was dispelled. But briefly reinstated with "NYC real estate".
I have no idea how much lands around me cost (Europe) but well-versed in the intricacies of the NYC and Madison rental prices.
Best Master Splinter impression ever.
Came for the Rossman impression stayed for the epic gameplay.
Haha that @Louis Rossman impression was hilarious...
Your impression of Lewis Rossman never fails to disappoint.
I love my tech but I’m not exactly engineering minded. I can understand a basic circuit board, learned a lot from UA-cam. To be honest, I watch your videos for the rambling mostly.
Keep em coming, and I’ll keep coming back!
"Hey everybody. Ppp bus under-volt pp bus, bus Apple bus, New York real estate market, bus."
~Louis Rossmann.
the meanings have informally become synonymous, but the technical difference is that sprockets mesh with chains, and cogwheels mesh with other cogs or with gears. the cog itself is a tooth of a cogwheel that is inserted into a wheel as opposed to a gear which has cut teeth.
Some men fear that they have become nothing other than cogs in the machinery of modern society. For my part, I prefer to think of myself as a sprocket.
So all our devices spy on us as you know. Not sure if it was my Android phone or the Alexa, but later that night (after filming) I got a UA-cam ad about sprockets for bikes.
@@BenHeckHacks sick🤘
What joy you bring to your work.
In the Atari ST port of Moon Patrol, there's two difficulty levels, "Beginner's Course" and "Advanced Course", each with a full A-Z run of checkpoints. After completing Advanced Course, you move on to Advanced Course 2, which is... the exact same thing, but with a "2" in the name. After that is Advanced Course 3... no different. 8-year-old me's crowning life achievement was reaching Advanced Course 24 without using any Continues. At that point, however, grandma noticed I hadn't shown up for lunch or dinner time, and sent my cousins upstairs to collect me, by brute force if necessary (it was).
Clearly not Louis - not enough flux!
An easier way to do those caps or any smc is put the flux down first then lay the component flat and just touch it with the iron (with solder on the tip). Then just do the other side.
Same with that charger controller.
But I guess everyone has their technique.
Your impressions ar always spot on.
Pp bus is underrated
sometimes undervoltaged and underamperaged too!
The Jetsons springy alien pet was named Orbitty. He only appears in the episodes produced in 1985, when they were padding out the show for syndication to run alongside the 1962 episodes.
Impressed with the game (and device) and thankful for the Bud footage at the end!
I enjoy your channel and the neat things you do on it.
I just get this Shady Tree Mechanics vibe when I watch or even just listen to you assemble something...wish it waz that AFM backboard but still it's great XD
It would be an honor to solder one of those bad boys
For what it's worth Ben there is a very solderable "6 pin USB-C" that has through hole shield posts obviously it only really functions as USB 2 but I love the things. Not sure who makes them but they can easily be found on AliExpress in small quantities for pretty cheap.
Good to know. I'm warming up to USB c
I love the UA-camr impressions. Maybe we should nominate who Ben does an impression of next (I vote for RLM to keep it in Wisconsin.)
AIIIIIIIIIIIIIDS!
I'm glad the game shows the word BOSS with and arrow pointing to it. I might've been confused otherwise.
Haha hey it's for the boss's health bar!
That looks awesome!
Good job on the game, Ben. It looks and seem to also play great!
I think it was I who suggested it, either here or on the twitters. Super fun to see it implemented.
It would (will, hopefully) be cool to see people make cases for that badge.
You know what would also be cool, but for a future version of that? If they could communicate with one another over a short distance (kind of like one of the handheld Nintendo consoles, I think the 3DS did that), and you could make a game based on that characteristic. Something that would use the screen just for notifications/warning messages, so maybe something like a spy game, that you could steal "plans" stealthily from other players (I'm thinking of the plans from Impossible Mission, something graphical, like a puzzle piece).
awesome also attempting to go for the most amount of references in the smallest amount of time love it
Everytime Ben says 'Tombstone' I think of the Ben Heck Podcast where Ben and Jones talked about Tombstone the movie, then Tombstone pizza, then the pizza cooker that cooked ONE slice of pizza at a time..... classic. I wish this was a kit, but I assume that wouldn't make any money...and would be something like a nightmare logistically.
I still have one I got from VGF a few weeks ago, im going to start building it!
I don’t think I heard any Dave Jones impersonations in this one but I really dig the acapella versions of 8 bit game soundtracks
You love to see a new Ben heck video! 😂
Ben is the best crazy cat lady on UA-cam.
Hey, Ben, you could also have a "bragging mode" where people display their high score on Moon Force instead of the clock!
"Cog" is the tooth on a wheel.
A "sprocket" is a cogged wheel that interfaces with another cogged wheel via a chain.
I always used to wait for the end of x-files... 'I made this' 😀
Nerd Far Side:
...Ben remembered too late he didn't have a new toothbrush, then fluxed his teeth.
Turd Far Side:
...Jenny's teeth wished she hadn't used her old toothbrush to clean the U-bend.
They would be better with accompanying cartoons, maybe.
Aaah some relaxin soldering. A nice dinner and then unwind and watch someone solder.
Awesome; if only I had the time to go to MGC
Not always that interested in what you build (or destroy), by ALWAYS entertained by your commentary
Two copyright strikes for Louis Rossman and EEVBlog impersonations No way the google will mistake his singing for the real thing
We must preserve Ben's brain after he passes away, it's an important databases of pop-culture references.
It's pre-preserved thanks to all the Spotted Cow :)
@@BenHeckHacks 😹
Buy a board it has his toothbrush DNA . Clone
Heck yes! a new Ben video!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, Learn to impersonate 'Explaining Computers'.
Great video Ben. My day in day out job is soldering stuff onto boards. I hold the international IPC certification.
You should make these available to purchase for those of us that can't make it to the con! I'd love to test my soldering skills!
I really enjoy these projects and wish I could do that.
Man I want one of these :D
Gotta love your Louis impression. He's a great guy and I can personally attest to him being the reason I will carry the knowledge of PPBus_G3Hot in my brain forever.
Also, not to just heap praise on other youtubers, I'm happy that over the years following your content I've gotten a lot more comfortable around electronics. Used to be I was too afraid to even try soldering SMCs by hand, now I'm no longer afraid and can confidently... screw them up. Eh, you win some, you lose some, right? Here's to a bright future with more interesting videos and less mistakes on my part, I learn something new every time. And that singing, oh, simply the best. (insert your best Tina Turner impression here)
Reminds me of Ben making the AVR dev board. "Manual soldering, I do it all the time"
Buick made a station wagon from 2018 until 2020 called the Buick Regal TourX.
Ben is hypnotizing me with song. 🤪
Nice. I'm not the only one that dug the old moon patrol song.
"A lot of people would say the moon and the Earth are much closer to a binary planetary system"
Some would say that the Earth is *our* moon. But that would belittle the name of our moon, which is: The Moon
It looks like GameBoy. In my childhood, I really enjoy to play it. The Pokermon is my favourite game in my life.
The proper tweezers is crucial for the small smd packages
Parallax?? Palk about going the extra mile. This is awesome Ben!
All I did was have (8) Window X position registers so I can scroll each row of 8x8 characters independently.
Ah yes, I see Bud's orange cat DNA is kicking in, becoming!
Careful with the isopropyl, or any alcohol around the OLED, it completely wrecks them.
See also LCDs
Was that a Classic Game Room reference? Nice.
I want to buy Moon Force, that game looks sick!
It's the Dark Souls of Moon games.
17:06 Dang, parallax scrolling? Impressive!
Behold! Cyclonus and his Armada. Scourge the Tracker and his Huntsman the Sweeps!
Cogs are gears. Sprockets are for chains or timing belts. (or printer paper)
Technically cogs are the teeth, cogwheels that mesh together are gears, cogwheels that mesh with a chain or cog belt (timing belt) are sprockets. Didn't know this myself till I researched it after reading your comment, it's actually more interesting than I thought it would be, probably some history there to explore (too tired rn tho).
Looking forward to building this with you! Will you sing for us in person?! 😏
Um maybe. Tip jar?
"... just get harder and harder until you cannot possibly..." Ah, the Tetris approach to Dark Souls.
SO I was hoping to meet you at MGC but i will be doing Army training that weekend :(
thought those were thinkpad nips
17:45 this is pretty cool
29:47 damn he's a unit
I'd love to attend, but alas I'm far far away. If you find yourself coming to Texas for Retropalooza or LPGE I've got dibs on at least 2 seats.
I have seen a few Buick station wagons. They are not bad looking...for a wagon.
Just in time for Shenzhen to shut down and possibly create a massive electronics shortage
Great board as always, What charge controller did you use please?
"There's just one catch. It's guarded be DEMONS!"
Where can I acquire the kit outside of the convention?
Is there a way to get one if I don't go to the MGC?
Looks awesome, are the gamebadge games compatible with the arduboy? Would love to play moon force on my homemade arduboy.
Cool ! But my one would be faulty after the first solder point 😅🤣
I wish I can get a Game badge they look pretty fun I’m not good at making stuff
How did you get transparency and a black outline on the sprites with 1-bit graphics?
An inverse isolation mask (black parts of sprite) ANDd with screen memory, then sprite white pixels ORd with that result.
@@BenHeckHacks It's better to XOR instead of OR because then the sprite can also invert background pixels.
Probably already been asked.. Is this project available as a kit (or as an Eagle file plus BOM) for those of us not in WI?
I'd say the Dark Souls of retro is probably Ghosts 'n Goblins
Damn, I honestly wish you would just sell those as kits!
Is the Friday at 1PM time that’s one the MGC website accurate for the workshop? Also, do you still need a ticket to enter the MGC if you’ve signed up for this badge workshop?
1-5pm. The workshop price is separate from MGC. I believe you can do the workshop without an MGC ticket?
That's really cool. I was giving kits away at the local maker fest with a nano, 400 pin breadboard, i2c OLED, joystick module and some wires. The focus for my stuff is the game programming so the kit goes together without soldering very easily.
I'm curious as to how much of the improvement in the framerate is from using SPI instead of i2c and how much is from just being better at coding. I used I2C with my kit just because it was fewer wires and originally used a wii nunchuck which is also i2c.
SPI is much, MUCH faster.
Can you use the ATTINY1624 in place of the ATTINY1616? Digikey has the former in stock.
Should work?
Ben, my retro friend, I'm sourcing parts for the game badge board I picked up last weekend at VCFMW and nearly fell for the trap! Your parts list calls for an ST LF50CDT, a $2, 5.0V regulator but the video shows an Onsemi NCP5501, a $1, 3.3V regulator.
Which battery cahrger IC are you using?
The year on the scrolling text of the game menu is also still 2021
Yes. I know. ;/
God, I did 3 or 4 years of Computer Engineering and Electronics at college, back in 1995 to 1999. Which was hardcore programming in C++ and, er... something else! Some other language that I can't even remember the name of now! The course also took in the architecture of computers so you would know what your programming commands were doing/affecting. Lots of maths, quadratic equations, hexadecimal and binary fuckery involved! 😊
I did it so that I would be able to make computer games in future!
Well, to be honest, I think it's generally something that you need to understand and 'click' with as a young child, preferably as a 7yr old and up! Cos even though I qualified the course, I seriously still had no bloody idea how to go about making a frigging computer game! *Sigh!* 😞
I should also mention that at that particular moment in time (mid 90s to early 2000s), computing took a quantum leap forward as to how things were done! Memory became cheap, modems... changed! And became cheap too. Basically everything I'd learnt seemed to become virtually irrelevant overnight!
Are you willing to share the 3D button files? I wanted to try printing special ones for my badge if so. If they’re private, I understand. Thanks!
that via made it the Gaine BADGE.
Was that first tune from simcity snes?
Damn, I'm going to be at MGC but didn't jump on this fast enough. Maybe ill build my own bootleg version before hand.
Can it run Petscii Robots?
I do the same, but opposite- as i am a lefty
graphic progamming kicking in Ben Heck Games show. Never i would have added that battery glued on that chip.
You were totally humming Paperboy weren't you?!
I’m interested in what kind of iron you use.
It's not the same iron that Ben uses, but I've bought myself a TS80P and it's awesome. With the right power bank you can even solder "on the fly"!
16:47 IDK about a new job. but definitely would make for a good second channel.
